Lois M. Nagel
Lois M. Nagel died Jan. 15, 2001, at age 74. A private service was held. Mrs. Nagel was born Jan. 28, 1926, in Portland. Her maiden name was Bernard. She graduated from Franklin High School and Oregon State University. She later graduated from the University of Oregon Medical School. She was a radiologist for various clinics and hospitals, including Kaiser Permanente, until retiring in the early 1980s. She was a past member of Mt. Tabor Presbyterian Church. In 1949, she married
Norman Nagel.
Survivors include her husband; daughters, Jill Bassitt and Joan Shingledecher; sister, Jean Swank; and five grandchildren.
Interment is in Willamette National cemetery. The family suggests remembrances to the Alzheimer's Association. Arrangements were by Young's Funeral Home.
Mary Helene Pendleton
A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 23, 2001, in St. Pius X Catholic Church for Mary Helene Pendleton, who died Jan. 19 at age 68. Mrs. Pendleton was born Nov. 17, 1932, in Nampa, Idaho, where she was raised. Her maiden name was Thompson. She moved to Vancouver, Wash., in 1980 and was the office manager for Vancouver Oil Co. until retiring in 1995. She moved to Portland in 1999. She was a member of the church. In 1968, she married
Joel Pendleton; he died in 1999.
Survivors include her sons, Douglas Harrison and Mike Harrison; daughters, Debra K. Call, Deanna R. Dietz and Jo Ann Eckman; and five grandchildren.
Disposition is by cremation. The family suggests remembrances to the American Lung Association. Arrangements are by Skyline Funeral Home.
Lawrence Edward Rafferty
A funeral will be at 11:30 a.m. Monday, Jan. 22, 2001, in Lincoln Memorial Funeral Home for Lawrence Edward "Larry" Rafferty, who died Jan. 18 at age 83. Mr. Rafferty was born Oct. 18, 1917, in Manhattan, Mont. He was raised in Montana and moved to Portland in the early 1940s. He was a business agent for the Boilermakers Union Local 72 and later was an international representative for the international union, retiring in 1985. He founded the Greater Portland Chinese Shar-Pei Club in 1980. He married
Shirley Stoltenberg in 1969.
Survivors include his wife; son, Larry; daughter, Judy; brothers, Rufus, Boyd and Chuck; sister, Orla Stroh; five grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
Interment will be in Lincoln Memorial Park Mausoleum. The family suggests remembrances to Providence Hospice.
Kathleen Virginia Shelton
Kathleen Virginia Shelton died Jan. 13, 2001, at age 78. No service will be held. Mrs. Shelton was born Oct. 9, 1922, in Spokane. Her maiden name was Bellamy. She moved to Gresham in 1960 and to Tigard in 1970. She was the co-owner of J.F. Shelton Co. until retiring in 1984. In 1966, she married
John F. Shelton; he died in 1996.
Survivors include her stepdaughters, Debbie Erickson, Betsy Stewart, Jennifer Hinton and Robin Allbaugh; sister, Arline Berg; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Disposition is by cremation. Arrangements are by Sunnyside Little Chapel of the Chimes.
Daniel John Smith
Daniel John Smith died Jan. 14, 2001, at age 47. A private memorial service will be held. Mr. Smith was born Oct. 5, 1953, in Portland. He graduated from Cleveland High School in 1972. He owned and operated the Hillsdale Mixer House & Deli for 13 years before becoming a purchaser for NCS Healthcare for eight years. He was a member of the Moreland Presbyterian Church.
Survivors include his parents, Dan and Patricia Murray.
Disposition is by cremation. The family suggests remembrances to the American Heart Association.
Blanche Irene Smithy
Blanche Irene Smithy died Jan. 10, 2001, of cancer at age 76. A private service was held. Mrs. Smithy was born Nov. 11, 1924, in Govan, Saskatchewan. Her maiden name was Arnegard. She immigrated to Portland in 1948 and was a homemaker. She was a member of Parklane Christian Reformed Church. In 1956, she married
William G. Smithy; he died in 1991.
Survivors include her daughter, Roberta Ruble; son, David; sisters, Alma Purcha and Norma Ingham; and one grandchild.
Disposition is by cremation. The family suggests remembrances to the American Cancer Society.
Helen Pitt Billstein
Helen Pitt Billstein died Dec. 24, 2000, at age 79. A private service was held. Mrs. Billstein was born March 2, 1921, in New York City. She graduated from Adelphi University in Garden City, N.Y., in 1942. She moved to Bellevue, Wash., in 1963, and to Portland in 1969. She was a homemaker and middle school teacher in New York and was a bookkeeper for her husband's businesses, H.H. Billstein & Associates and Total Maritime Service until about 1990. In 1943, she married
Herbert Billstein; he died in 1991.
Survivors include her son, Robert C.; daughter, Betty Morrison; and three grandchildren.
Interment is in Willamette National cemetery. The family suggests remembrances to the Evergreen Hospice Services, 12822 124th Lane N.E. Kirkland, WA 98034. Arrangements are by Bothell Funeral Home in Bothell, Wash.
Michael E. Curtis
Michael E. Curtis died Dec. 14, 2000, of a heart attack at age 51. A funeral has been held. Mr. Curtis was born March 3, 1949, in Seattle. He was raised in Seattle and Portland. He later moved to Leesburg, Va. He served in the U.S. Army in Vietnam. He worked as a regional sales manager for a utilities company. He married
Joyce Curtis.
He is survived by his wife, daughters, Erin, Amanda, Sarah and Caitlin; sons, Alex and Zachary; parents, Theodore and Bernice; and brothers, Gary and Scott.

Elmer Bruce Froemke
A graveside service will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 23, 2001, in Lincoln Memorial Park for Elmer Bruce Froemke, who died Jan. 19 at age 86. Mr. Froemke was born July 6, 1914, in Fargo, N.D. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II in Asia and the Pacific. He moved to Portland in 1945 and was a general contractor who owned E.B. Froemke Construction until retiring in 1993. He was a member of the Church of God in Anderson, Ind. In 1942, he married
Helen Stockdale.
Survivors include his wife; sons, Loren and Brad; daughters, Heidi and Signe; and five grandchildren.

Marjorie Ella Hevlin
A funeral will be at 1 p.m. Monday, Jan. 22, 2001, in Restlawn Memory Gardens Funeral Home in Salem for Marjorie Ella Hevlin, who died Jan. 19 Mrs. Hevlin was born Feb. 24, 1916, in Portland. Her maiden name was Churchill. She moved to Union as a child and returned to Portland as a teen-ager and graduated from Roosevelt High School. She also attended business school. She moved to Corvallis in 1957 and to Salem in the early 1960s and was an executive secretary for several Oregon state boards until her retirement. She moved to Junction City about 1990. In 1940, she married
Carl Hevlin; he died in 1974.
Survivors include her daughter, Sandra Toftdahl; sons, Don and Robert; sister, Peggy Kistner; five grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
Interment will be in Restlawn Memory Gardens.
Wilbur W. 'Ken' Kennell
A memorial service will be at 2:30 p.m. Monday, Jan. 22, 2001, in Finley's Sunset Hills Mortuary for Wilbur W. "Ken" Kennell, who died Jan. 17 at age 81. Mr. Kennell was born May 3, 1919, in Harrisburg. He attended Modesto Junior College in California and Oregon State University. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II in the Pacific. He moved to Portland in 1945 and worked for Oregon Automobile/North Pacific Insurance Co. until retiring as vice president in 1984. He then was an executive for the Portland office of the Oregon Insurance Guaranty Association until 1999. He was a former board member of the OSU Beaver Club. In 1940, he married
Ruth Stahl; they later divorced. In 1971, he married
Fern White; she died in 1993.
Survivors include his daughters, Jan Johnson, Barb Evers and Nancy Miller; companion, Sandy Gibbs; and six grandchildren.
Interment is in Finley's Sunset Hills Memorial Park. The family suggests remembrances to the Dove Lewis Emergency Animal Hospital in Aloha.
Homer Rudell Kirk
A funeral will be at 1 p.m. Monday, Jan. 22, 2001, in St. Johns Funeral Home for Homer Rudell Kirk, who died Jan. 18 at age 77. Mr. Kirk was born July 11, 1923, in Rosiclare, Ill. He served in the U.S. Army in Europe during World War II. He moved to Portland in 1962 and was a yard foreman for St. Johns Auto Wrecking until retiring in 1986. He married
Donna M. Ross; she died in 1972. In the late 1970s, he married
Elaine Kuehl; she died in the early 1980s.
Survivors include his daughters, Carol Peck and Pamela Rusch; sons, Rudy, Randy, Terry, Robert and James; brothers, Marion and Charles; sisters, Norma Wiley and Shirley Sevly; 14 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.
Interment will be in Finley's Sunset Hills Memorial Park.
Lyle John Lawyer
A funeral will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 23, 2001, in Skyline Funeral Home for Lyle John Lawyer, who died Jan. 19 at age 89. Recitation of the rosary will be at 7 p.m. Monday, Jan. 22, in the funeral home. Mr. Lawyer was born Aug. 21, 1911, in Terre Haute, Ind. He worked on the Al-Can Highway in Alaska and Canada and then with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in Alaska during World War II. He moved to Portland in 1946 and owned Lyle's Auto Repair in St. Johns until retiring in 1973. He was a past member of Assumption Catholic Church and a current member of Holy Cross Catholic Church.
Survivors include his sons, Richard and Dale; daughter, Jeanette; brother, Paul; sisters, Marie Jonas, Myrtle Hansen, Mildred Keys and Rita Yeater; six grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.
Private interment is in Skyline Memorial Gardens. The family suggests remembrances to the American Cancer Society.
