Rosemary Firsich
A funeral Mass will be at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 14, 2000, in Holy Rosary Catholic Church for Rosemary Firsich, who died Oct. 10 at age 86. Mrs. Firsich was born March 4, 1914, in Salina, Kan. Her maiden name was Quinn. She was a homemaker and moved often. She had lived in Portland twice before and returned from Laguna Hills, Calif., about 10 years ago. She was a member of the church. In 1936, she married
Walter Firsich; he died in 1976.
Survivors include her son, Richard; daughter, Ann Reeves; and seven grandchildren.
Interment will be in Gethsemani Catholic cemetery. The family suggests remembrances to the Holladay Park Plaza endowment fund. Arrangements are by Gateway Little Chapel of the Chimes.
Hannah Krieger
A funeral will be at 11 a.m. Monday, Oct. 16, 2000, in Killingsworth Little Chapel of the Chimes for Hannah Krieger, who died Oct. 11 at age 81. Mrs. Krieger was born Sept. 20, 1919, in Tacoma. Her maiden name was Thaut. She was a homemaker who moved to Portland in the 1930s. In 1942, she married
John Krieger; he died in 1993.
Survivors include her daughters, Barb Murray, Shirley Johnson and Betty Schwab; sons, Alvin, Edwin and Thomas; 15 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.
Interment will be in Willamette National cemetery.
Walter Cooper La Baugh
A graveside service will be at 1 p.m. Monday, Oct. 16, 2000, in Prairie City cemetery in Prairie City for Walter Cooper La Baugh, who died Oct. 11 of complications from a stroke at age 71. Mr. La Baugh was born Jan. 17, 1929, in Joplin, Mo. He moved to Portland as a child and graduated from Franklin High School. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps and later the U.S. Army Reserve. He moved to Tigard in 1951 and was a civilian employee for the Oregon National Guard. He moved to Redmond in 1960 and was manager of the Oregon National Guard armory there. He returned to Portland in 1961 and continued his work for the Oregon National Guard. In 1981, he became a package car mechanic for United Parcel Service, continuing until his retirement in 1990 due to an injury. He moved to Prairie City in 1991 and served as District 10 commander of the American Legion in 1997-1998. He was a member of Kern Park Christian Church. In 1950, he married
Ruby Louise Milam; they were later divorced. He later married
Louise Hiatt.
Survivors include his wife; former wife; daughters, Dana Schreiner and Aimee Spaulding; sons, James and Michael; sister, Lorraine "Winnie" Knoles; and seven grandchildren.
The family suggests remembrances to his church. Arrangements are by Driskill Memorial Chapel in John Day.
Frances Lynn Manos
A funeral will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 14, 2000, in Caldwell's Colonial Chapel for Frances Lynn Manos, who died Oct. 10 of leukemia at age 60. Mrs. Manos was born Dec. 12, 1939, in Princeton, Ind. Her maiden name was Miller. She received nurse's training at Pasadena City College and Huntington Memorial Hospital in Pasadena, Calif., becoming a registered nurse. After moving to Portland in 1963, she worked for Holladay Park Hospital and later Holladay Park Plaza, retiring in 1996. She was a member of the First Church of God in Vancouver, Wash. In 1986, she married
Nicholas Manos.
Survivors include her husband; daughter, Annamarie Reed; stepdaughters, Annette Basilio and Denise Lynch; sisters, Joanne Minnis and Carol Kolb; brother, John Miller; and two grandchildren.
Interment will be in Willamette National cemetery. The family suggests remembrances to the Leukemia Society of American.
Frances Evelyn McCommas
A gathering of family and friends will be at 6:30 p.m. Monday, Oct. 16, 2000, in the residence of Jeanne Egge in Milwaukie for Frances Evelyn McCommas, who died Oct. 9 of lymphoma at age 84. Mrs. McCommas was born Oct. 16, 1915, in Minot, N.D. Her maiden name was Chamblin. She was a homemaker who moved to Portland in about 1960. In 1938, she married
Kelly McCommas; he died in 1988.
Survivors include her daughters, Mary Beal, Jeanne Egge and Carrie Dix; son, K.C.; sister, Vivian Teel; 13 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Disposition is by cremation. The family suggests remembrances to Shriners Hospitals for Children. Arrangements are by Crown Cremation & Funeral Services.
Anton J. Miller
A memorial service will be at 3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 14, 2000, in Mt. Scott Funeral Home for Anton J. "Tony" Miller, who died Oct. 6 at age 86. Mr. Miller was born March 26, 1914, in Portland. He graduated from Jefferson High School and worked for the Southern Pacific Railroad for more than 45 years, retiring as a lead carman in 1976. He was a former member of St. Ignatius Catholic Church. In 1939, he married
Psyche G. Bielman.
Survivors include his wife; daughter, Susan A. Goodland; brother, Jacob; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. His son, Phillip E., died in 1966.
Interment will be in Mt. Calvary Catholic cemetery. The family suggests remembrances to Providence Portland Hospice.
Ethel A. Olson
A memorial service will be at 3:30 p.m. Monday, Oct. 16, 2000, in Rose City Funeral Home for Ethel A. Olson, who died Oct. 9 at age 94. Mrs. Olson was born April 24, 1906, in Tillamook, where she was raised on the family farm. Her maiden name was Anderson. She moved to Portland about 1925. She worked at U.S. Bank for over 30 years and retired as assistant cashier in 1968. She moved to Gresham in the early 1990s. In the early 1930s, she married
Gust F. Olson; he died in 1939.
Survivors include her daughter, Myrna Glenn; sister, Edna Burbank; niece, Marilyn Anderson; and two grandchildren.
Private interment will be in Rose City cemetery. The family suggests remembrances to a charity of choice.
A celebration of life will be at 2 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 15, 2000, in Sellwood Masonic Temple for Mohammad Yehya "Mike" Shaaban, who died Oct. 10 at age 66.
Mr. Shaaban was born Sept. 29, 1934, in Ayn Teeny, Syria. He immigrated to Michigan in the late 1950s and later attended college in Sacramento and then graduated from California State University at Chico, in 1968 with a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering. He took additional courses at the University of Washington. He moved to Corvallis in 1971 and to Portland in 1977. He was an engineer and estimator for Carroll Mechanical Inc. in Portland for about 20 years. He was a Moslem and attended Masjed As-Saber in Portland. In 1967, he married
Pamela Jeff.
Survivors include his wife; sons, Omar M., Ali M., Waleed Y. and Nabeel M.; mother, Badiah Seameh; brothers, Ali and Waleed; and sisters, Fatimah Seameh and Mariam Seameh.
Interment will be in Islamic cemetery in Corvallis. The family suggests remembrances to Masjed As-Saber, 10323 S.W. 43rd Ave., Portland, OR 97219. Arrangements are by Young's Funeral Home.
Warren M. 'Marty' Black Jr.
A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Monday, Oct. 16, 2000, in Evangel Baptist Church for Warren M. "Marty" Black Jr., who died Oct. 3 at age 54. Mr. Black was born May 31, 1946, in Portland. He graduated from Washington High School in 1964. He was a laborer for The Tannery and then was a mailer for the Community Press for a couple years. He was a cabdriver for Oregon City Cab for a few years. He was also a commercial painter for Freightline He was a sales clerk for Plaid Pantry and was also a miller at Terminal Flour for 10 years and then a baker for Franz Bakery. He later was a maintenance worker for Neighbors of Woodcraft, American Property Management and Fred Meyer. In 1965, he married
Karen Diane Clemens; she died in 1982.
Survivors include his daughters, Kyle and Devon; mother, Virginia; brothers, Charles, Randy and Reggie; sister, Char Johnson; and two grandchildren.
Disposition is by cremation. Arrangements are by Westside Cremation Service.
Robert Edwin Smalley Sr.
A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 14, 2000, in Bateman-Carroll Funeral Chapel in Gresham for Robert Edwin Smalley Sr., who died Oct. 10 at age 76. Mr. Smalley was born Aug. 26, 1924, in Lakeview. He moved to Portland in 1939. He served in the U.S. Air Force during World War II and in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War. He was a truck driver for Calbag Metals in Portland for 30 years, then he owned his own business, Smalley Construction, in Portland for several years. He also owned Head East, a pipe and tobacco store in Portland. He married
Terri Wolf; they later divorced.
Survivors include his sons, Robert Jr. and Paul; brother, Buzz; sisters, Mabel Hampton and Ethel Harper; and four grandchildren.
Disposition was by cremation.
Eugene Ralph Wilks
A memorial service will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 14, 2000, in Lincoln Willamette Funeral Directors for Eugene Ralph Wilks, who died Oct. 7 at age 49. Mr. Wilks was born March 9, 1951, in Portland. He attended Marshall High School. He had been a machinist for Proto Tools and Precision Castparts.
Survivors include his son, Jason Wilks; stepsons, Darren Houghton and Troy Houghton; stepdaughter, Christina Houghton; father, Lester; brothers, Kelly Wilks and John Rowin; and sisters, Sunny Wilks and Bonnie Davis.
Disposition was by cremation.
Mary Estelle 'Toby' Bouray
A memorial service will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 14, 2000, in Sandy Funeral Home for Mary Estelle "Toby" Bouray, who died Oct. 10 at age 78. Mrs. Bouray was born Oct. 12, 1921, in Gold Beach, where she was raised. Her maiden name was Campbell. She moved to Portland in 1939. She was a homemaker, worked at a drugstore and was an elevator operator in downtown Portland. She moved to Brightwood in 1956 and returned to Portland in about 1997. In 1939, she married
George Skinner; they later divorced. In 1956, she married
Winton Bouray; he died in 1985.
Survivors include her son, David Skinner; daughters, Debbra Cramer and Peggy Neuner; six grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
Disposition was by cremation. The family suggests remembrances to the Oregon Humane Society.
Mary H. Bray
A memorial gathering will be from 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 15, 2000, in the Tigard home of Jim Bray for Mary H. Bray, who died Oct. 5 of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis at age 68. Mrs. Bray was born Nov. 16, 1931, in Coral, Mich. Her maiden name was Finch. A graduate of Michigan State University, she moved to Portland in 1954 and taught French at Grant High School and later Sunset High School, retiring in 1990. She was a past president of the Confederation of Oregon Foreign Language Teachers and had served on the Oregon Commission for the Handicapped. In 1953, she married
Jim Bray.
Survivors include her husband; son, Bill; daughters, Jane Sunada and Catherine Bray; brother, Richard Finch; foster daughter, Myrna Tufono; and six grandchildren.
Disposition was by cremation. The family suggests remembrances to the Richard Burdell Memorial ALS Foundation. Arrangements were by American Burial and Cremation.
