CHARLES “CHUCK” GAVIN

Charles Gavin, long-time Enterprise resident, passed away Aug. 28, 2000 in Enterprise.

Gavin was born April 17, 1919 in Eaton, Colo. He enrolled in the University of Wyoming’s College of Agriculture in 1936. In 1940 he enlisted in the U.S. Army, where he rose from the rank of private to captain in the infantry. He took park in the campaigns of: Normandy, Northern France, Belgium, Holland and Germany. He was wounded twice and decorated. He married Shirley Marie Starr in Aug. 15, 1942.

After serving five years, a honorable discharge and recovery from his wounds, he returned to Laramie and graduated in June 1949 with a B.S. in agriculture. In July 1948 he became the assistant agriculture agent in Cheyenne. In 1950 he was appointed the agriculture agent of the Wyoming Agriculture Extension Service in Carbon County. In 1955 he became assistant Union County extension agent, and in 1967 became Wallowa County extension agent, retiring in 1978.

Chuck was preceded in death by Shirley on May 4, 1983. He married Henrietta Quinn in Aug. 17, 1984.

He is survived by his wife Henrietta of Milton; sons, Michael and wife Jeanette of Long Beach, Calif., Patrick and wife Kathy of Pullman, WA; stepdaughters, Karen Prout and Gary of Pendleton and Patti Nelson and husband Doug of The Dalles; four grandchildren and four stepgrandchildren.

In lieu of flowers the family requests donation be made in his name to Wallowa Memorial Hospital. A memorial in Chuck’s honor will be held Sept. 16, at 2 p.m. at Community Connection in Enterprise.

ELIZABETH MORRISON

Elizabeth J. Wood (Bagley) Morrison died on Thursday May 24, 2001, at her home in Hermiston at the age of 80 years after a long bout with cancer.

She was born at Nampa, Idaho, on July 3, 1920, to parents Ray and Genevieve Ellis Wood. She married Robert N. Bagley at an early age, and they moved around much of their married life. They divorced in 1966. She then married in 1974 to Lew Morrision in Santa Rosa, Calif., which ended in divorce in 1978.

She enjoyed a career in real estate. She moved from Bend in 1987 to King City to be close to her son, Bill Bagley. She lived at King City until 1999 when she was unable to care for herself, and moved to Hermiston to reside with her daughter and son-in-law, Betty and Mike Herndon.

She is survived by sons Robert K. Bagley and family of Santa Rosa, Calf., Henry Rice and family of Corbett, and William R. Bagley and family of Hillsboro; daughters Beverly Ann Traina and family of Grass Valley, Calif. and Betty J. Herndon and family of Hermiston; brothers Clark Howard and Jack Howard both of Eureka, CA; brother-in-law John E. Parker and sister-in-law Patricia Parker, both of Copperopolis, Calif; 22 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren.

A graveside service will be held on Saturday, June 2, 2001, at 2 p.m. at the Pleasant Hill cemetery near Sherwood.

Memorial Contributions may be made to the Vange John Memorial Hospice, 645 W. Orchard Ave., Hermiston, OR 97838. Burns Mortuary of Hermiston is in charge of arrangements.

RICHARD PINKERTON

Richard D. Pinkerton, 79, died May 23, 2001 at his home in Joseph.

Mr. Pinkerton was born Oct. 17, 1921 to J. Herman and Ruth E. Mossman Pinkerston in Chehalis, Washington. He grew up in Ethel and attended school in Onalaska, Washington.

He worked on the family farm, drove truck, worked in a sawmill and was a lumberjack before serving in the U.S. Army during WWII.

He married Lauretta Rachau in 1950 and had two children. They were later divorced.

He moved to Fruitland, Idaho and later married Helen Hollinger.

Dick retired from Ore-Ida in Ontario as a swing shift supervisor in 1987.

After both being widowed, Dick and Lauretta were reunited in 1995 and spent six years enjoying their family, gardening, hunting, fishing and just being together.

Survivors include his best friend and companion, Lauretta Cross of Joseph; daughter and son-in-law, Lee and Lyle Davis of Baker City; son and daughter-in-law Dick and Debbie Cross of Joseph; stepson and daughter-in-law, Larry and Marion Hollinger of Boise, stepdaughter and son-in-law, Brenda and Louie Recla of Meridian; nine grandchildren (including locally, Eric Young, Andrew Davis, Alisha Young and Travis Cross) and four great-grandchildren.

Military Commital was Tuesday, May 29, at Enterprise cemetery by V.F.W. Post #4307. A dinner preceded at the hall by the V.F.W. Auxillary #4307.

WILBER ZOLLMAN

Wilber Kenneth Zollman of Enterprise died at Wallowa Memorial Hospital in Enterprise on Friday, May 25, 2001, at the age of 89.

He was born in Jericho Springs, Mont., on Aug. 10, 1911, to Claude C. and Ethel E. Zollman. Wilber was the second oldest of 12 children and grew up on a farm. Wilber worked a lot with the mules that they used to farm the ranch. With the stock market crash of 1929 and Claude's bank failing, the family made the decision to move west. Claude had purchased a brand new 1929 Chevy truck. Nine kids made the trip with their parent in the spring of 1930, all the way to Enterprise where Claude's brother lived. Wilber was 19 and farmed people's places.

He married Wilda Irene Evans in Walla Walla, Washington, on March 5, 1946. The y had a beautiful baby girl, Julia Ann, on July 21, 1948. Wilber and Wilda farmed in Enterprise for 55 years.

Wilber is survived by his wife Wilda and daughter Julia Ann of Enterprise; brother, Dwayne Zollman of Union; sisters, Katherine Wilson of Eagle Creek, and Francis Edager of Richland, Washington. He is survived also by two grandsons, two granddaughters, seven great-grandsons, four step-great-grandsons and three step-great-granddaughters.

Religious services were held Wednesday, May 30, at Bollman Funeral Home, with Rev. Harold Fuller officiating.

Donations may be made to Wallowa Valley Care Center.

BERNIECE. ARNHART

Memorial services will be held for Berniece V. Arnhart Tuesday, June 19, at the Enterprise cemetery. A native of Wallowa County, she died January 17, 2001, at Grande Ronde Hospital. Berniece was born Feb. 7, 1908, near Enterprise, the daughter of Alvin McFetridge and Gertrude May "Hearing" McFedtridge. She married Edmund E. Birkmaier on Aug. 23, 1927. He preceded her in death in 1951. She later married Gordon Arnhart on March 27, 1954, in her sister's home in Dayton.

Berniece was a member of the Christian Church in Enterprise, and she was active in many community organizations, such as being Mother Advisor for the Rainbow Girls. For years she was chaperone for the Queens and their courts of the Wallowa County Fair. She was a charter member of the Wallowa County CowBelles and the group's first president. She was a staunch supporter of FFA, chaperoning them many times, and she looked forward to being at the Elks Lodge for many special occasions.

Berniece's children and grandchildren were her pride and joy. She loved her many friends as well.

Survivors included her husband, Gordon Arnhart of Enterprise; sons Alvin (Bud) of Enterprise amd Mack Birkmaier of Joseph; sister Orva Gubser of Dayton; eight grandchildren;17 great- grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

A private service was held Jan. 20 with burial at the Enterprise cemetery. Contributions in her memory may be made to a charity of choice or to the Wallowa County Stock Growers and CattleWomen Scholarship fund in care of the Bollman Funeral Home.

HELEN HOPKINS

A celebration of Life services will be held for Helen Hopkins at the Enterprise Catholic cemetery, Saturday, April 14, at 11 a.m.

BERNITA MATTHEWS

Lifelong Wallowa resident Bernita L. Matthews passes away March 27, 2001, at St. Mary's Hospital in Walla Walla, Washington, of natural causes after a lengthy illness.

Bernita was born at home in Wallowa, Sept. 15, 1934, to Carl and Mary (Fuller) Hauser. She was the fourth of five children born to the Hausers including three brothers and one sister.

Bernita was raised in the attended grade school at Wallowa. She graduated high school at WHS in the spring of 1952. On Nov. 8, 1952, Bernita was married to Dee M. Matthews of La Grande. The couple made their home in Wallowa, where they lived their entire lives, raising a family of three sons and two daughter.

Bernita was an individual who found happiness and enjoyment in everything that life had to offer. She chose to be a wife and homemaker and enjoyed the little things associated with this life. While doing the chores around the house you could always find her singing as she went along. She loved nature and being outdoors. Some of this was evident in the vast array of wildlife she fed on a regular basis in her front yard, and the many little dogs she had over the years. She also had flowers and plants everywhere, which she loved. Being a person of petite nature, it would surprise people to know that Bernita was even a truck driver on the highway for a while wit her husband Dee.

Above all, Bernita was an individual who loved the Lord. In the early 1960's, Bernita found her lord and walked with him daily throughout her life. The many people who knew Bernita would tell you she was the kindest and gentlest little lady they knew. It was her deep faith in God that brought this spirit out in her, and this is what everyone will remember about Bernita Matthews.

Bernita is survived by her children and their families, sons Robert and Jerry Matthews of Wallowa and Douglas Matthews of Boise, Idaho; daughters Patsy Tillery of Wallowa and Sarah Matthews of Boise, Idaho; 16 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. She is also survived by brothers Jack Hauser of Ontario, Carl Hauser Jr. of White City, Melvin Hauser of Baker City, and one sister, Pauline Miller of Bandon.

Bernita was preceded in death by her husband Dee, her mother and father.

RALPH BEARD

Ralph Everett Beard, 88, an Asotin resident, died March 19, 2001, at his Asotin home.

He was born May 19, 1912, at Joseph Creek to Leonard and Ina Varney Beard. He attended school at Paradise and received his eighth-grade diploma there.

He married Pearl Houch and they later divorced. He married Helen Akin Aug. 11, 1967, in Enterprise. He worked for the Oregon State Highway Department for 30 years and retired in 1973.

After retirement, Ralph sometimes worked at a mail boat stop in Hell Canyon, as a carpenter and as an outfitter around the country. He and Helen also worked as camp cooks for several hunting parties at Bear Lake and Circle Hot Springs, both in Alaska and for members of the Disney family in Klamath Falls.

He was a Catholic. He was a lifetime member of the Elks Lodge at Enterprise and a lifetime member of the Asotin County Historical Society.

His survivors include his wife, Helen Bernice Beard of Asotin; two daughters, Diane Beard of Elmira, Calf., and Marilyn Mooring of Clarkston; three sons, Chuck Akin of Anchorage, Alaska, Bob Akin of Wasilla, Alaska, and Kevin Akin of Sacramento, Calif; three brothers, Frank Beard of Waldport, Leo Beard of Asotin, and Leonard Beard of Caldwell, Idaho; two sisters, Orpha Rieman of Klamath Falls, and Mable Wamsley of Sinibar, WA; 12 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

Services were held at Asotin County Fairgrounds

VELMA SASSER WINNINGHAM

Velma Calista Sasser Winningham, 73, of Hubbard, died on April 3, 2001, in Hubbad..

She was born on March 22, 1928, in Enterprise, and graduated from Enterprise High School.

In 1955 she was married to Obie Winningham in Fairbanks, Alaska.

Over the years she lived in Alaska, Texas, Lake Grove, Ore., and Vancouver, Washington. In 1969 they moved to the Hubbard area in 1969 to farm, and to the town of Hubbard in 1983.

Velma was a member of Mid Valley Community Church, and enjoyed reading and gardening.

Survivors include her mother Pearl Sasser of Mt. Angel; a son, Clay Winningham of Albany; daughters Sharon Taylor and Johnnie Burt, both of Hubbard; and four grandchildren.

Her husband Obie preceded her in death in 1976.

Services will be held Saturday, April 7, at 2 p.m. at the Cornwell Colonial Chapel in Woodburn, with interment at Willamette National cemetery in Portland.

The family suggests contributions be made to Mid Valley Hospice or American Cancer Society c/o Cornwell Colonial Chapel, Woodburn OR (541) 981-7771.

WINIFRED SUTTER

Winifred "Winnie" H. Sutter, 88, a resident of Baker City died March, 6, 2001, at St. Elizabeth Health Care Center. At her request cremation was held, and family services will be held at the Enterprise cemetery in Enterprise at a later date.

Winifred was born in Enterprise July 31, 1912, to the late Everett and Della (Kooch) Stubblefield. She received her education in Enterprise and married Albert Sutter in Lewiston, Idaho. Mrs. Sutter lived in Yuba City, Calif., before returning to Oregon. She lived in John Day and came to Baker City in 1996.

She is survived by her step-son, Russell Bratcher and his wife Gloria of Baker City; step-daughter, Jenette Freeman and her husband Rex of Fruitland, Idaho; sister-in-law, Virginia Sutbblefield of Joseph; niece Carolyn Strohm and husband Jim of Enterprise; and nephews, James Zahm and Bob, David and Bruce Stubblefield. Also numerous cousins and great nieces and nephews survive.

She was preceded in death by her husband Albert, her sister Golda Hackbarth and brothers Robert and Donald Stubblefield.

Those wishing to make memorial contributions in her memory may direct them to the Arthritis Foundation, this may be done through the Coles-Strommer Funeral Home, 1950 Place St., Baker City, OR 97814.

ESTHER MEANS

Esther "Dee" Means, 92, died March 7, 2001, in Walla Walla, Washington. Dee was born Nov. 22, 1908, in Leavenworth, Kansas to Thomas and Norah Colgate. She attended schools in Kansas and Illinois. During her younger years she worked for Hallmark Cards in Kansas City and was also a member of the Hallmark Chorus. She had a great love for the piano, singing and writing poetry. Dee later graduated from Burroghs Business College.

Dee married Orville Means in June of 1940. During WWII she was employed at the Pacific Naval Air Base in the Surplus Property Ward in Oxnard, Calif., and was a member of the Sojourners Club. She was also charter President of Barbaraworth PTA in Brawley, Calif., and sang in the Musickeepers and was also Past President of Southside Garden Club, both in Oxnard.

After Mr. Means's retirement from the Department of Highways in California, they moved to Imnaha, and settled at Imnaha River Woods. Due to health problems they later moved to Milton-Freewater. Mr. Means preceded her in death in 1988.

She is survived by her three daughters, Cathy Baillie of Isaquah, WA, Janet Mittag of Franktown, Colo. and Mary Sue Allen of San Diego, Calif; son, Charles Colgate of San Diego, Calif., 12 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son, Jon Bollinger in 1927 and a granddaughter, Holly Miller.

RICHARD STANLEY

Richard B. Stanley, 78, of Joseph, passed away on Feb. 24, 2001. He was born in Davenport, Iowa on Feb. 10, 1923, and resided in Joseph since 1990.

He is survived by his wife Marion; daughters Linda Wilhelmi of Arroyo Grande, Calif., Cindy King of Klamath Falls, and stepdaughter Lisa Lieberherr of Switzerland; grandchildren Brianne Wilhelmi of Arroyo Grande, Calif., Jenny King of Klamath Falls, Michael King of Salt Lake City, Utah, Adi and Robin Lieberherr of Switzerland, Molly Nedom of Lost Gatos, Calif., and Melissa, Meg, and Lindsay Pugh of Sunnyvale, CA; and great-granddaughter Katie Nedom.

Memorial services were held in a private family ceremony. Contributions in his memory may be made to Herring House through Herring Funeral Home, Walla Walla, WA 99362.

BERTHA SMITH

Bertha Adelia Smith, 95, of Joseph died March 9, 2001, at Wallowa Memorial Hospital. She was born May 20, 1905, in Lincoln Valley, N.D., to Jacob Hoff and Julianna (Beglo) Hoff.

She married Russel Smith in Vancouver, Washington, in 1946, and he preceded her in death in 1993.

She is survived by a son, Neil Jacobson.

A Celebration of Life will be held Sunday, March 18, at 6 p.m. at the Joseph Baptist Church.
