ELMER HANSEN

Elmer (Sonny) Martin Hansen, 64, of Pilot Rock, died Jan. 2, 2001.

Elmer was born in Waterford, N.Y., to Ingolf Melvin and Ingrid A. Kvame Hansen, both from Bergen, Norway. At the age of one year Elmer moved with his family to Red Bluff, Calif., where he was raised and attended school. When he was 13 he learned to play guitar.

Elmer married his first wife, Cathy Rowan, on April 11, 1955. That same year began a long lasting career as a log scaler. Elmer and Cathy were blessed with five children. In 1968 Elmer moved his family to Boise, Idaho, where he worked for the State of Idaho as a check scaler.

In 1979 Elmer moved to Pilot Rock where he met his second wife, Darlene Owen. They married in 1981 and raised her two boys, Gregg and Eddie. Elmer's favorite hobbies were playing the guitar, camping, fishing, and watching auto racing.

Survivors include his wife, Darlene J. Hansen of Pilot Rock; sons Donald Hansen of Twin Falls, Idaho, Hoby Hansen of Heppner, Greg Wart of Pilot Rock, and Eddie Owen of Defuniak Spring, Fla.; daughters, Sis Ostolasa of San Ynez, Calif., Donna Stephens of Florence and Kathy Clow, Melba, Idaho; brothers, Arnie Hansen and Dick Hansen, both of Red Bluff, CA; 17 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and his beloved Pug, Satchmo.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Ingolf and Ingrid Hansen; a brother, Arthur; a sister, Ruth Anna; a niece, Ingrid Anna and his beloved Pug, Won Ton.

Funeral services were held Jan. 5, 2001, and memorial contributions can be made to American Cancer Society, c/o Burns Mortuary of Pendleton, P.O. Box 489, Pendleton, OR 97801.

Mary Matheson

Mary Virginia Matheson, long time resident of Pendleton, Ore., died November 19, 2000, in Hillsboro. Mary was born March 7, 1912, in Enterprise to Sam and Effie Magee, and was of pioneer lineage. She graduated from Enterprise High School, class of 1929, and obtained a teaching certificate from Eastern Oregon State College in 1931.

Mary lived in Washington and Oregon, settling in Pendleton, where she was a psychiatric aide for the Eastern Oregon Hospital. After retirement, she volunteered numerous hours for the Salvation Army Thrift Shop. She was a devout member of the Salvation Army Church and supported them with tithing and volunteer work.

Mary was preceded in death by a son, Dennis Taylor, who died in 1962. She is survived by four children - Sarah Gerde of Renton, WA, Lawrene Bennett Williams of Beaverton, Samuel Taylor of Dallas, Texas, and Jerry Taylor of Lake Stevens, Washington. She is survived by 10 grandchildren, three great grandchildren and numerous other family members whom she loved dearly.

Services were held Nov. 19 at the Salvation Army Church in Pendleton, with burial at the Enterprise cemetery. Donations may be made to the Salvation Army Church, 150 SE Emigrant Ave., Pendleton, OR 97801

Dorothy George

Dorothy Mae Johnson George of Elmer City, WA, died Nov. 15, 2000, at Coulee Community Nursing Home at the age of 89.

She was born in Wallowa, Ore., April 9, 1911, the daughter of Zora and Grover Johnson.

She married John M. George in Boise, Idaho, in 1934. The couple moved t Elmer City in 1942, where they lived except for the last two years of World War II when she and their children lived in Wallowa.

They returned to Elmer City until 1964 when they moved to Seattle, Washington.

Dorothy retired as a cook for the Highline School District in 1975, after which they returned to their home in Elmer City.

As a young woman in Wallowa, she organized the first 4-H cooking and sewing clubs. There she was also a Christian Endeavor leader. As her children came of an age she organized a 4-H sewing club, Brownie and Girl Scouts club, Cub and Boy Scouts club, and was a Band Booster Club mother.

For many years she wrote for the Coulee area Star Newspaper and for the Spokane papers.

She kept a wonderful garden and orchard, canning and freezing the produce.

Her hobby was sewing. During her first several years in the Coulee area she was active in the Grand Coulee Community Church and later years in the Coulee Dam Community Church. She was the first Avon lady in Elmer City, and also worked the election polls there.

Services were held at the Coulee Dam Community Church on Saturday, Nov. 18.

Survivors include two sons: David G. George and John K. George and wife Su of Seattle; one daughter, Susan B. Redd and husband Tom of Atlanta. Georgia; five grandsons, 15 great-grandchildren, one great-great-granddaughter; sisters Ellen Alander of Prineville, Ore., Winona Holloway of Live Oak, Calif., Maybeth Wilson of Marion, Louisiana, Grace Moores, and brothers Tom Johnson of Wallowa, Ore., and Joe B. Johnson of Walla Walla, Wash, and 30 nephews and nieces.

She was preceded in death by her husband, John, and a sister, Mildred Trump.

MYRTLE COLLINS

Myrtle Melinda (Lyon) Collins, a Wallowa County pioneer, died August 11, 2000 in Fullerton, Calif.

Born at Promise on April 25, 1905, she was the daughter of John and Sally (Sanner) Lyon. She went to school at Promise and later married Howard Collins of Powatka Ridge on May 1, 1923. They made their homes in Wallowa, Baker City, Mollala and Fullerton. She was a homemaker and in later years, worked at St. Jude Hospital in Fullerton.

Preceding her in death were her parents, her brothers, Johnnie, Gilbert, Ralph and Clarence, sisters Lula and Etta, her husband Howard and a son, Raymond.

Survivors include four daughters, Hazel Royer of Redding, Calif., Mavis Hockett of Yuma, Ariz., Loretta (Maxine) Smith of Hemit, Calif., and Shirley Oliver of Antioch, Calif., 19 grandchildren, 48 great grandchildren, 25 great great grandchildren, many nieces and nephews.

A memorial service was held August 27. Memorials may be given to the Orangethorp Christian Church, 2200 W. Orangethorp, Fullerton, Ca. 92633 where Mrs. Collins had been a member for many years. The memorial will go toward a Collins stained glass window.

LAURA LOFTUS

Laura Mae Loftus, 73, of Imnaha passed away March 31, 2000, of natural causes.

She was born Nov. 16, 1926, to Martha Ida (Simmons) and Dee Jones of Gordon, Texas.

Laura married Sam Loftus May 21, 1947, in Wallowa.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Dee and Martha Jones.

Laura is survived by her husband Sam Loftus of Imnaha; daughter, Kitty McAdam of Portland; son, Sam Loftus of Pendleton; grandchildren, Jason and Lindsey McAdam and Cicely Loftus; brother, Billy Jones of Xenia, Ohio; and sister, Sara Ray of Yellow Springs, Ohio.

A religious service was held at Bollman Funeral Home on Thursday, April 6, with Jerry Raedeke officiating. Burial was at the Enterprise cemetery.

Donations can be made to the Cancer Fund in care of the Bollman Funeral Home, 315 W. Main St., Enterprise OR 97828.

LORRAINE WEIGAND

Memorial services for Lorraine Palmyre Scheer Weigand, 65, who died April 9, 2000, at Wallowa Memorial Hospital, will be held at the Joseph Community Center at 2 p.m. Thursday, April 13 (today).

Lorraine was born on Nov. 10, 1934, to John and Palmyre Scheer in Bend. Growing up in Redmond, Sisters and Mollala, she graduated from Redmond High School in 1953. After high school, Lorraine worked as a secretary in Redding, Calif. and Portland.

She married Bob Weigand on Oct. 25, 1958. Bob and Lorraine farmed in Deschutes County until they moved to Wallowa County in 1979. She started an antique store in Joseph in 1983, called Poor William's Country Store, which she operated until 1998. Lorraine was a officer of the Joseph Chamber of Commerce in the 1990s, and also worked for the organization. The last two winters she was a camp cook for the Krebs Ranch in Ione.

Lorraine loved antiques and all the searching and bartering that went with them. She also enjoyed working with flowers, as she volunteered many years as a flower superintendent for both the Deschutes County Fair and the Wallowa County Fair. Lorraine treasured Wallowa County and enjoyed spending her time visiting and helping friends and family.

Lorraine is survived by husband Bob, daughter Becky Morgan of Joseph, son and daughter-in-law Sam and Terri Weigand of Emmett, Idaho, son and daughter-in-law Tony and Cora Weigand of Las Cruces, N.M., and grandchildren Katie and Jessie Morgan of Joseph, and Beth and Joe Weigand of Emmett, Idaho.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Wallowa Valley Health Care Foundation through Bollman Funeral Home.

GUS MALAXA

Long-time Wallowa County resident Gus Malaxa, 98, of Enterprise died away April 11, 2000, of natural causes.

He was born Jan. 16, 1902, to Manuel and Feliciana Malaxa of Bicaya, Spain. Gus was married to Juana F. Ulacia, March 17, 1951, in Bicaya, Spain.

He was preceded in death by his parents Manuel and Feliciana Malaxa.

Gus is survived by his wife Juana F. (Ulacia) Malaxa of Enterprise; daughter, Mary Garechana of Bosie, Idaho; and grandchildren, Jake and Robert.

Friends are invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial at St. Katherine Catholic Church at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, April 15, with Father Peter Fernado officiating.

Donations can be made to the St. Katherine Catholic Church in Enterprise.

LILLIAN BEST

Former Wallowa County resident Lillian Irene Best, 91, of Baker City, passed away April 7, 2000, of natural causes.

She was born Oct. 24, 1908, to Lawrence E. and Maude Pearl (Calvin) Sidebottom in Meadville, Mo.

Lillian was married to Cecil Ivan Best on Nov. 16, 1930, in Cozad, Neb.

She was preceded in death by her husband Cecil in Oct. 19, 1991 and her parents Lawrence E. and Maude Pearl Sidebottom and son, Duane and one grandson.

Lillian is survived by her son, Keith and his wife Audrey of Baker City; daughter-in-law, Carolyn of Ridgeway, Colo., and six great-grandchildren.

Private services were held Monday, April 10, at the Enterprise cemetery.

DONALD BALDWIN

Donald M. Baldwin, 73, of Enterprise died at his home on Dec. 1, 2000.

Don was born July 11, 1927, in Portland to Melvin Milton and Emma Katherine (McCrum) Baldwin. He married Dolores Jeanne McClymond in Newberg, in 1950, and graduated in 1951 from Oregon State University, where he was a member of Alpha Zeta Fraternity. Baldwin also served in the US Army.

Don worked in soil conservation for 38 years, before retiring in 1988. He was a member of St. Patricks's Episcopal Church in Enterprise, a Boy Scout leader for many years, a member of the National Range Society, a Mason in the Scottish Rite, and Worshipful Master in the Enterprise lodge, and a member of Al Kader Shrine.

Survivors include daughter Kathy Strom, Newberg; sister Helen Wolf, Beaverton; brother Howard Baldwin and his wife Jeanette, Hot Springs, Ark.; brother-in-law Mark, husband of Lottie Smith, St. Paul; sister-in-law Maureen Baldwin, Portland; brother-in-law Ralph Parker, Gresham; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife in 1990, and a son, Scott.

Services were held Dec. 5, with burial at the Enterprise cemetery. Donations can be made to the Home Hospice, Cancer Fund, the Shrine Hospital or the Nature Conservatory C/O Bollman Funeral Home, 315 W. Main St., Enterprise, OR 97828.

ILMA SHINN

Funeral SERVICES FOR Ilma Shinn will be held Thursday, Dec. 7, 2000, at 11 a.m. at the Enterprise Nazarene Church, with interment to follow at Prairie Creek cemetery.

Memorial contributions in her memory may be made to the Nazarene Church in care of the Bollman Funeral Home, 315 W. Main St., Enterprise, OR 97828.

HELEN HOPKINS

Memorial services for Helen Hopkins are pending. She died Dec. 1, 2000, at her home in Joseph.

Details will follow next week. Bollman Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

VERN WHITE

Vern E. White passed away in Roseburg on Oct. 17, 2000. Vern was born February 15, 1914 to Edward M. and Laura B. White. Memorial services were held October 19, in Winston, with private Interment at the Enterprise cemetery.

IVAN HOVIS

A memorial gathering was conducted Sunday, Nov. 26, 2000 at 21st Century Kids Club in Sherwood for Ivan Earl Hovis, who died Nov. 7 of cancer at age 64.

Mr. Hovis was born Nov. 4, 1936 in Enterprise and was raised in Joseph. He graduated from Joseph High School in 1954 as the class salutatorian. He lettered in football, basketball, track and boxing. He graduated from Whitman College in 1958 and later lived in Coos Bay before moving to Portland in 1988. He was a car salesman for Armstrong Buick and other businesses in Portland for about 12 years.

In 1997, he married Laronda Grant.

Survivors include his wife, daughters Lois Kapling and Marjorie Ross, stepsons Juan Grant, Rashuad Grant and Rahni Grant, stepdaughter Marquita Grant; mother Vivian Hovis, brother Robert Hovis, and eight grandchildren.

Disposition was by cremation.

The family suggest remembrances be made to the American Cancer Society. Arrangements are by Telophase Cremation Society.

Pieter deVos

Pieter Rudger deVos, 79, of Corvallis, who spent part of his retirement at Wallowa Lake, died on April 7, 2000.

The son of Pieter and Marie deVos, Hewas born in Rotterdam, the Netherlands, on Oct. 18, 1920. Pieter deVos graduated from the Marine Engineering College in Rotterdam, and served with the Dutch Merchant Marines in the Pacific theater during WWII. Part of his military mission included the first liberation of POW.s from concentration camps in Indonesia.

At the end of the war, Pieter returned to Holland briefly and then immigrated to San Francisco in the United States, where he met Mary Lee Steel from Enterprise, Oregon. Pieter and Mary Lee eloped to Reno and were married on Feb. 19, 1949.

A few years later, the couple moved to New York City where he joined General Motors. In 1952 Pieter was sent to Karachi, Pakistan, as area manager for Detroit Diesel, a division of GM. After two years in Pakistan, he and his family returned to the home office in New York and lived on Long Island. In 1962 Pieter was transferred with his family to the Middle East office in Beirut, Lebanon. Ten years later, Pieter was assigned to establish a regional office in Singapore, and again his family traveled with him.

Upon retirement in 1984, Pieter and Mary Lee moved to Port Townsend, WA, and divided their time between their seaside home, their cabin at Wallowa Lake, and visits with their children also living in Oregon. Pieter and Mary Lee moved to Corvallis in 1993.

Pieter is remembered by family and friends as an expert seaman, a marvelous storyteller, a congenial host, and a fascinating man.

Pieter is survived by his wife Mary Lee of Corvallis; three sons, Mark and family of Philomath, and Pieter John and Dolf and their families of Corvallis; and several nieces and nephews in Europe and Australia. The family held a private memorial. A memorial may be made to: Alzheimer's Association, 919 N. Michigan Ave., Chicago, IL
