A.G. Scott

Arnold "Bun" Scott, 84, of Enterprise, formerly of Malin, died at Wallowa Memorial Hospital on Jan. 25, 2000.

Bun was born in Hebbing, Minn. to Glenn and Mrytie (Robinson) Scott. He attended Thurston High School in Springfield. He married Clara Ann Wagner on June 30, 1935, and they had three children, Beverly (Dutcher), Sharon (McAuliffe), and James Scott.

Around 1942 they moved to Malin, farming being their livelihood. Later he went to work and retired from the Loveness Mill.

Bun and Clara bought a couple home in Wallowa County at different times to spend summers here with their daughters and one time their son lived here also. He enjoyed many things including family, fishing, hunting and carpentry.

In the Fall of 1979, he attended Blue Mountain Community College taking Civil Engineering with interests in Solar energy. Also with him, making three generations in attendance, at BMCC were Bun's daughter, the late Beverly Dutcher, and two of her four children, Scott and Shawn.

He helped build several family homes and was a major contributor on the construction of the miniature town, Crowbar, at the end of West Greenwood St. in Enterprise.

In September of 1999 they sold the ranch and moved to Enterprise due to health reasons.

He is preceded in death by his parents; his brothers, Clifford and Floyd; daughter Beverly; and his son.

He is survived by his wife; sisters, Dorothy Richardson of Bend, Vivian Travess of Springfield; daughter Sharon McAuliffe of Enterprise; 12 grandchildren; 22 great grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild and four foster children.

Those who wish to make contributions may do so to Home Health Hospice Services at 107 SW First St, Enterprise, OR 97828.

Rosary was held Friday, Jan. 28, at 7 p.m. at the Bollman Funeral Home with Mass Saturday Jan. 29 at 11 a.m. at St. Katherine Catholic Church and private internment at the Enterprise cemetery.

LaVida Barton

LaVida Barton, 95, of Walla Walla, WA, passed away Jan. 11, 2000, at Evergreen Milton-Freewater Health and Rehab Center.

The funeral was held at the Chapel of Herring Funeral Home in Walla Walla, with the Rev. Raymond Biggers of First Christian Church of Milton-Freewater officiating.. Graveside services were held Jan. 17, at the Lostine cemetery.

LaVida was born of Sept. 7, 1904 in Rathdrum, Idaho, to Henry and Eveline Carmon Lortie. Her parents moved to Minam when she was three years old. She attended grade school at Wallowa.

She married Silas T. Barton on Jan. 31, 1921, in Enterprise. They moved to Walla Walla, Washington, in 1960, and made their home on Bush St. there.

LaVida was an avid fisherman and fished in the Walla Walla and Wallowa areas. She even fished from her wheelchair in later years. She also enjoyed hand crafts, painting (specializing in "fuzzy" posters) and cooking.

LaVida is survived by four daughters Elviria Sims of Lebanon, Vera Roop of Walla Walla, WA, Shirley Coffee of Oregon, Clarice Kiesecker of Troy; four sons, Arnold of Goldendale, WA, Virgil of La Grande, Russell of Portland and Emmett of Colorado Springs, Colo.; and numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Silas Barton in 1981; one daughter, Irene Barton, in 1942; three brothers and three sisters.

Memorial contributions may be made to Walla Walla Community Hospice through the Herring Funeral Home.

Earl Wayne Quarles

Earl Wayne Quarles of Tigard died at his residence on Jan. 17, 2000.

He was born May 30, 1948 at Lexy Crossroads, Winchester, Tenn. to William and Viola (Vines) Quarles. In 1950 the family moved to Hermiston area. Earl's mother Viola died in 1954. Beside living with his father and family, he also had the opportunity to spend his youth with the Joseph Gilleese and Harry Westfall families in Hermiston, and the Melvin Botts family in Joseph.

After high school in Joseph and Hermiston, he attended college and enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1968.

In 1970 he met Carol Ann Allison of Boise, Idaho. They were married July 24, 1971 at St. Paul's Catholic Student Center in Boise, Idaho. They lived in Boise for four years; in Eugene for nine years; in Albany for four years; in Charlotte, N.C., for four years and in Tigard for the last six years. Earl had a distinguished career in the transportation of forest products of 27 years while with Trus Joist Corporation and Willamette Industries.

Earl is survived by his wife Carol Quarles, daughter Allison Marie, sons Lucas Wayne and Travis Michael, all of Tigard; three sisters, Willa Moore, Barbara Bowling and Dorothy Loveland of Hermiston and one brother Paul of Baker City.

He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers George of Hermiston and Charles of Washougal, Washington.

An annual scholarship fund in the Transportation and Supply Chain degree program at Portland State University has been established in his memory. Donations may be sent to the Earl W. Quarles Endowed Memorial Scholarship Fund C/O PSU Foundation, PO Box 243, Portland, OR 97209.

Interment will be at St. Anthony Catholic cemetery in Tigard.

Stanton Long

Stanton "Shortie" Long, 84, of Lostine passed away at the Grande Ronde Hospital on Jan. 6, 2000.

Mr. Long was born Aug. 6, 1915, in Seymour, Iowa, to Henry Thomas and Maude (Pettit) Long.

After graduation from high school, Stanton and a friend rode a freight train West. Stanton loved to log, hunt, fish, the outdoors, deep sea fishing and loved to go to his winter home in Yuma, Ariz. After retirement from the sawmill, he took up gardening.

Stanton is survived by sons Thomas of La Grande, Robert of Lostine, and Douglas of Wallowa; sister, Alice Cline of Des Moines, Iowa; nine grandchildren, six great grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

His wife Dorothy preceded him in death in 1997.

Stanton Long is in the care of Kevin and Anne Loveland at Loveland Funeral Chapel (formerly Payne Family Mortuary) 1508 4th Street, 541-963-5022.

Memorial graveside services will be held this spring at Lostine cemetery.

Memorial contributions can be made to the Salvation Army through Loveland Funeral Chapel.

Spencer L. Fletcher

Spencer "Spence" Fletcher, age 72, of Elgin, died Sunday, Dec. 26, 1999, at Mill Creek Manor retirement home in Cove.

Graveside services were held on Thursday, Dec. 30, 1999, at the Elgin cemetery with Pastor John McElravy of the Elgin Christian Church officiating.

Spence was born on August 17, 1927, the son of Noah and Effie Fletcher, in Butler, Tenn. He served in the U.S. Army until 1947 before moving to Oregon in 1953. He lived in Kinzue, Ore., for several years and worked at the sawmill there where he learned to grade lumber.

Spence moved to Wallowa and worked at Bates Mill until it closed, then became the proprietor of Baird's Tavern before beginning his career at Boise Cascade Mill in Elgin 1964. He commuted from Wallowa to work in Elgin until he moved to Minam in 1972 where he was known as Minam mayor for a short time, before moving to Elgin in 1979. He married Nancy (Hutchison) Case in 1981. She preceded him in death in 1991.

Spence received awards from Boise Cascade for being top stud lumber grader in 11 western states in high quality stud lumber grading competitions in 1988 and 1989 before retiring from the Elgin Mill in 1995. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and loved working in his yard and took great pride over the years in the care he put into his cars.

Survivors include his daughters, Linda (Fletcher) Kimbley of Elgin and Betty (Fletcher) Fritz of Butler, Tenn.; four step-children from his wife Nancy, Jimmy and Jesse Case, both of Elgin, Leslie Ann Case of Grangeville, Idaho, and Lanette Jenkins of Kooskia, Idaho, and Glenn Heffling of La Grande and Rhonda Heffling of Clarkston, WA; two grandchildren; many step-grandchildren; four brothers; six sisters; and other relatives and friends. A daughter as well as his wife preceded him in death.

Lloyd George Schultz of Enterprise died Jan. 4, 2000.

He was born to Frank and Fila Schultz, July 30, 1915, in Williston, N. D. Both of his parents have preceded him in death.

As a young boy Lloyd helped with farming, and at age 15 went to work for an uncle on a road building crew. He returned home in his 20s and went farm hunting in Minnesota with his father, buying a farm in Fox and moving the family there. Later Lloyd and his mother visited relatives in Washington and got hooked on the northwest while there. He went to work for B.W. James, who moved to Wallowa County and influenced Lloyd to move here also. He promptly moved his mother and family to his beautiful new home.

Lloyd worked in Wallowa County building roads for log crews, working winters at the Ford garage, and also for Jim and Carolyn Maasdam at the Case dealership.

But the land called and Lloyd went back to his true love, farming. He farmed north of Enterprise next to Clyde and Helen Stonebrink's place located up Golf Course road. He retired in 1962. Lloyd cared for his mother until she was 93 years of age and was a good provider to his family members all those years. He lived as a bachelor most of his life until he met and married his other true love, Barbara Leffler, on June 4, 1988. Barbara survives her husband, Lloyd, living at their home in Enterprise.

Others surviving him are: sisters Arnalda Gregerson of Forest Grove, Joyce Thayer of Clarkston WA, and Gladys Novony of Borup, Minn.; brother Leon Schultz of Roseau, Minn.; and 16 nieces and nephews. Lloyd is also survived by his step-children, Bruce, Mark, and Gary Leffler, and Laurie Pfliiger, all residing in Seattle, WA, and Brenda Robertson of Clarkston, Washington.

A memorial service was held at the Bollman Funeral Home Saturday, Jan. 8, 2000.

Robert Allen Barth

Robert Allen Barth, a former Wallowa County resident, passes away on Jan. 1, 2000, at Medford, due to complications from a lung disease.

He was born July 7, 1924, in Toledo, Ohio, the elder son of Ralph and Beatrice Barth. He lived in the Toledo area until joining the Navy in 1942. He was trained as a carrier pilot and served in the South Pacific during WWII, earning the rank of lieutenant. On Nov. 17, 1945 he married Jeanne Anne Rook and the following year he left active duty and returned to Toledo, although he remained in the Naval Reserves until 1955.

Bob built a family home for his wife and three daughters just outside of Toledo, and then in 1955 moved his family to southern Calif. He worked for several years for General Motors and also has his own insurance agency.

In 1971, he and Jeanne moved to Wallowa County where Bob worked in auto sales for Milligan Motors, Courtney Motors, and Summit Ford until health problems brought about an early retirement.

They were members of Grace Lutheran Church in Enterprise and Bob was also a member of the Joseph AF and AM Masonic Lodge, the Aircraft Owners and Pilot's Association, the Chief Joseph Flyers, and a lifetime member of the VFW. He enjoyed getting back into flying with the plane club, and even flew to Nebraska. or Colorado to visit his daughters. When he had to give up real flying he joined a group of friends building and flying remote aircraft in Red Cleveland's hay fields.

In 1989, his health made it necessary to move to a lower altitude and Bob and Jeanne made a new home in Shady Cove, north of Medford. They lived in a small retirement mobile home park, making lots of good friends and learning some new crafts with gemstones and jewelry. They were members of the Roxyann Gem Club in Central Point and St. John Lutheran Church in Eagle Point, where memorial services were held for Bob on Jan. 5.

He is survived by his wife Jeanne; daughters Susan Conley of Joseph, Connie Dunham of Enterprise and Marilyn Vaughn of Kauai, Hawaii; nine grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren; his brother Ted of Belmont, Calf., nephews William and Greg Barth and niece Julie Moeser.

A military memorial service will be held in the spring in Enterprise. Memorial contributions may be made in his name to Grace Lutheran Church in Enterprise or to the charity of choice.

William Joseph Poulson

William Joseph "Bill" Poulson, 75, of Lostine died Jan. 4, 2000, at his daughter's home in Kuna, Idaho.

Born Dec. 5, 1924, at Wallowa, the son of Truman and Bernice "McCubbins" Poulson, he married Beverly Rose Hotchkiss. He is survived by his wife Beverly of Lostine; sons, Joseph of Monument and Jack of Lostine; daughters, Rita Stanley of Holtwood, Pa., Ruth A. Crafton of Stanfield and Beverly I.. Ward of Kuna, Idaho; 11 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren; and sisters Helen Weaver and Ina Stockdale. He was preceded in death by daughter Barbara B. Poulson.

Funeral services were held Saturday, Jan. 8, at the Bollman Funeral Home with interment following at the Enterprise cemetery. Memorial contributions in his memory maybe made to charity of choice in care of the Bollman Funeral Home.

Lloyd George Schultz

Lloyd George Schultz of Enterprise died Jan. 4, 2000.

Otis Jarrad

Otis "Sandy" Jarrad, 72, of Joseph died Dec. 24, 1999, as a result of an auto accident. He was born June 6, 1927 at Omaha, Neb., the son of Otis M. and Ursula May Jarrad.

Sandy served in the US Army during WW II. His love of life was music. Well known as The Possum Trotters. He also, for many years, played the town Santa.

Sandy was the man you saw with a smile at the County Land fill every weekend. When he wasn't doing this he was a silversmith, and worked for the Manuel Museum.

Survivors include his companion, Janice Meyers of Joseph; son Jeremy and daughter-in-law Melissa of Enterprise; stepdaughter Rebecca Meyers, of Joseph; stepsons, Ron Meyers of Ohio, Jim Meyers of Missouri, Jeff Meyers of Joseph; eight grandchildren; and sister Mary Lou Anderson of Milton-Freewater.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, Dec. 30, at 11 a.m., at Bollman Funeral Home, with Interment to follow at Prairie Creek cemetery.

Memorial contributions in his memory may be made to the Family Trust in care of Bollman Funeral Home, 315 W. Main St., Enterprise, OR 97828.

James Smith

James C. Smith, Jr., passed away on Dec. 24, 1999, in Joseph. He was born Oct. 8, 1927, in North Platte, Neb., to James and Juanita Smith.

He moved to Washington state in 1933, and his family settled in Everett, Washington.

JC graduated from Everett High School in 1945, joined the US Navy and served in the Philippines. He was drafted and served in the US Army during the Korean War. He graduated from WSU in Business, and went to work at Boeing. He returned to WSU and received a degree in Education in 1961. JC taught high school in Issaquah and Quincy, WA, and retired from teaching in 1982. He wintered in Death Valley until he moved to Desert Aire, Mattawa. In 1998 he relocated to Joseph.

JC is survived by Suzanne Smith of Spokane, WA; three daughters, Sallie Christensen, Spokane, WA, Nancy Helm of Tacoma, WA, and Molly Blalock of Joseph; four grandchildren, Katherine, Rebecca and James Helm, and Zachary Blaylock.

JC is also survived by his sister, Martha Vomaske of Mt. View, CA; uncle and aunt, George and Jewell Smith of Kennewick.

No service will be held, at his request. Memorials may be made to the Wallowa County Hospice, PO Bos 460, Enterprise, OR 97828 or the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, 733 Third Ave., New York, N Y 10017.
