GERALDYNE WALLER
Geraldyne K. Waller, 84, of Elgin passed away Friday, May 12, 2000, at her home after an extended illness. Geraldine was born November 15, 1915, in Kansas City, Kansas A private family service is planned.
Loveland Funeral Chapel at 1508 4th Street, La Grande, is in charge of arrangements.
FRANCES SMITH
Frances Renfrow Smith died April 21, 2000, at her home in Pasco, Washington.
Frances was born to Dale and Flossie Renfrow at Wallowa on March 13, 1924. She lived on a farm in the Dry Creek district and attended grade school at the Willow Springs Country School, District #16. She then attended Wallowa High School, graduating in 1942. She was on the honor court for Chief Joseph Days in its early years. She worked for a Wallowa dentist, Dr. Thompson.
Frances later moved to Pendleton where she met and married
William L. Smith; they had two children, Steven and Debbie.
She lived in Pasco for the past 47 years and worked as a radio dispatcher for the Pasco Police Department. She was very active in the Eagles Lodge in Pasco and was a member of the Methodist Church.
Survivors include her children, Steven and Debbie, and their children. She was preceded in death by her husband, William "Bud" Smith; both her parents; and two sisters, Genevieve and Edna Hunter. Services were held April 26 with internment at Columbia Memorial Gardens in Pasco.
WALTER "RED" RORDEN
Walter Rorden, 54, passed away at his home in Joseph on May 11, 2000.
He was born July 5, 1945 in Parma, Idaho, the son of Earl and Lorena (Atkins) Rorden. He married
Nancy Murphy in 1965, and they had three children.
Survivors include his wife Nancy; daughters Amy Jo Cross of Enterprise, and Michelle Lynn Devore of Joseph; brother Marshall Rorden of Weston; sister Marjorie Rorden of Enterprise; and four grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son, Robbie Dean Rorden, in 1994.
Services were held May 15, 2000.
ALFRED CORNELIUS
Alfred Cornelius passed away recently at Wallowa Memorial Hospital. He was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret Cornelius. He is survived by his children, Fred Cornelius, Ray Cornelius, Lori Eichler of California, Gerald Cornelius and Edith Van Ausdle of Oregon, and many grand children and great grandchildren.
HILDA POWELL
Hilda Evalena Powell passed away May 1, 2000, at St. Mary Medical Center in Walla Walla, Washington. Hilda was born at Promise on August 24, 1918. Her parents were Green Spencer and Belle Thompson Trump. Hilda had seven brothers and two sisters.
Hilda went to several grade schools in Oregon as the family moved many times during her childhood. She graduated from Umapine High School and then took one year of post graduate studies at Dayton, Washington. She then attended Eastern Washington State College at Cheney, WA, for one year.
She married
Marvin Powell on June 15, 1941, at her parents' home in the Tucannon River Valley. After World War II, the young couple moved to Walla Walla where they have resided ever since.
During her high school years she cooked for families with small children for her board and room. She worked for downtown stores as a clerk and as a bookkeeper for the Greyhound bus line at their Walla Walla terminal. Later she worked for 10 years at the U.S. Agriculture Stabilization and Conservation Service.
She was a member of Central Christian Church since 1945, serving there as a Sunday school teacher, deaconess and, in later years, as deaconess emeritus. She worked at the church as office secretary and bookkeeper, and was a member of Bee Hive Rebekah Lodge #70 for more than 50 years.
Hilda like to work outdoors with her flowers. In later years she confined her gardening to house plants. She liked to go camping and horse back riding.
Survivors include son David Powell and wife Jeanne of Seattle, WA, one sister, Celia Neal of Waitsburg, WA, one brother, Joner Trump of Dayton, WA, grandchildren Chelsea Powell of Cambridge, Mass., and Brenna Powell of Seattle, WA, and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, six brothers, and one sister.
Services were held May 5, 2000, with burial at Waitsburg City cemetery, Waitsburg, Washington.
TRACY STROEBEL
Tracy J. Stroebel passed away on May 2, 2000 in Joseph at the age of 22.
Tracy was born Aug. 6, 1977 in Enterprise to Charlie and Nancy Stroebel. He graduated from Joseph High School in 1995. He was employed by Zacharias Logging and JZ Logging.
He grew up loving the outdoors, camping, hunting and fishing with his family and friends. Playing football in high school was something he did with great enthusiasm. Whether it was playing a game or doing his job running equipment in the woods, he always strived to be the best.
Under his tough exterior he had a heart of gold and a real soft spot for small children, especially his niece Kelsi.
Those who knew him will always remember that sparkle in his eyes, his wonderful laugh and his sense of humor.
He will be loved and missed by family and many friends.

Tracy is survived by his parents Charlie and Nancy Stroebel of Joseph; brother, Chris and Beaudie and daughter Kelsi Stroebel; sisters, Mandy and Lisa Stroebel; grandmother, Marilynn Roper of Homedale, Idaho; grandfather, Jim Richards of Cambridge, Idaho; great-grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Melvin Richards of Cambridge, Idaho; numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.
ELIZABETH BOHNENKAMP
Elizabeth Ruth Bohnenkamp passed away in her sleep on April 23, 2000, while residing at the Alpine House in Joseph.
Betty was born in 1918 and has been a lifelong resident of both Union and Wallowa counties. She graduated form La Grande High School and the University of Oregon. She is a retired school teacher and has been very active in the AAUW and the Linus Pauling Foundation.
She was the daughter of Chase and Mabel Bohnenkamp, now both deceased.
She is survived by sister Nancy Winter, Los Angeles, Calif; niece Sally Glaske, Newport; nephews, Russell Winter or Tacoma, WA, Christopher Winter of Wayland, Maryland, and Brian Winter of Manhatten, Kansas; 12 grand-nieces and nephews; and numerous other relatives.
The family requests any memorial remembrances be sent to the La Grande Public Library in Betty's name. A memorial service will be held in Joseph in August, 2000.
JOSEPH CARPER
Joseph Thomas Edison Carper, 83, of Anderson, Calif., passed away April 3, 2000, at his home.
He was born Sept. 20, 1916, in Promise. He was a logger by occupation and worked in the shipyards during WWII. He married
Evelyn Trotter, March 5, 1940, in Lewiston, Idaho.
Survivors include son Richard Moore of Caldwell, Idaho; daughters Caroyl Moore of Valley Springs, Calif., Novella Greggs of Anderson, Calif., and Maxine Poole of Bend; two brothers, Robert Carper of Joseph and Orville Carper of Lostine; sisters, Edna Beardsley of Washington, Sadie Lyon of Cove, Bertie Prince and Leona Collins of Wallowa, Elsie Stroope of New Mexico, and Shirley Doud of Lostine; 18 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; and seven great-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Evelyn, in 1994, as well as parents Walter and Lula Barton Carper and sister Mary Patterson.
A memorial service for both Joseph and Evelyn Carper will be held May 29, 2000, at the IOOF Hall in Wallowa, with burial in the Lostine cemetery.
ELLEN REICH
Ellen Mae Reich passed away April 26, 2000, at her home in Enterprise.
She was born August 5, 1928, in Los Angeles, Calif. She married
her husband of 53 years, William James Reich, who passed away April 13, 2000. She was precede in death by her parents, William Elvin White and Ester Obling (Thompson) White.
Survivors include two sons, Terence J. Reich of Enterprise and Randall J. Reich, Central Point; one sister, Barbara Murray White of Oahu, Hawaii; two brothers, Harold White, Fallbrook, Calif., and William White, Carson City, Nev.; and one granddaughter, Brooke Reich.
Graveside services are pending. Donations may be made to Wallowa Memorial Hospital and Hospice of Enterprise.
NINA L. RACEY
Nina L Racey, 91, of Enterprise, died at home Saturday April 29, 2000.
She was born in Boring, Oregon on Aug. 6, 1908 to Melvil and Dora Deen. She married
Laurence House and they had a daughter, Wanda June House. They were later divorced, and she and Wanda moved to Malheur where she met and married
Alexander Racey. They lived in the Bridgeport area and ranched for over 30 years. Later they sold the ranch and moved to Baker City, where they lived for seven years, then moved to Estacada to live with her daughter.
Upon the death of her husband, she and her daughter, Wanda, moved to be with her granddaughter, Lonnie Lies, in Enterprise, where she lived until her death.
She was preceded in death by husband Alexander; daughter Wanda; two sisters, Greta and, Zola; and a brother, Frank Deen.
She is survived by sister Zona Jenkins of Missouri; four grandchildren, Lonnie Lies of Enterprise, Leta Turner of Irrigon, Adna Delco of Wamic, and Alex Kuehn of Enterprise; 12 great grandchildren, and 18 great-grandchildren.
Graveside services will be on Saturday, May 6, at 2:30 p.m. at the Logan Pleasant View cemetery at Oregon City. Bollman Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
ELLIS MONCRIEF
Ellis Everett Moncrief, 73, of Joseph, died Sunday, April 30, 2000, at Wallowa Memorial Hospital.
He was born July 12, 1926, at Warwick, WA, the son of Lester and Lenora (Kuhnhausen) Moncrief.
He was a veteran of WWII, serving in the U.S. Navy from 1943 to April 1947. He graduated from Oregon State University in 1969, entered the U.S. Forest Service as contracting officer and retired in 1989. He was a fixed-wing and helicopter pilot, as well as an instructor. He enjoyed football, fishing and making marquetry pictures for his family.
Survivors include his wife, Helen (Fish) Moncrief; sons, Mark and his wife, Jill, of Enterprise and Dan and his wife, Terri, of Joseph; stepson Paddy Doyle and his wife, Shalla, of Idaho; step-daughters, Susan and her husband, Jim Geer, of Idaho, and Peggy Brown and her husband Larry of Kansas; twin brother Dr. Irvin and his wife, Jean, of Arizona; brother Lester and his wife, Georginne of Idaho; 12 grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Services will be held Thursday, May 4, 2000, at 11 a.m. at the Presbyterian Church in Lostine, with burial at Prairie Creek cemetery in Joseph.
ROSS HEARING
Ross Ellwood Hearing, 78, of La Grande died April 23, 2000, at a local care facility.
There will be a graveside service at 11 a.m. Thursday, (today), April 27, 2000, at the Grandview cemetery Mausoleum, with the Rev. Norm Shrumm of the First Presbyterian Church officiating. Following the service the family extends an invitation to Ross' friends to honor him at a luncheon gathering at noon at Hoke Hall #309 on the Eastern Oregon University campus.
Mr. Hearing was born in Wallowa on Sept. 8, 1921, to Merle and Alma (McCullough) Hearing. He attended grade school in Wallowa and then graduated from La Grande High School in 1939. He graduated magna cum laude in 1947 from Eastern Oregon University, where he was associated student body president from 1942-1943.
He served in the National Guard from 1937-1941 and was in the military during World War II, serving in Africa and Italy from 1943-1946. He then attended the University of Oregon graduate school. From 1949-1951 he taught school in Vancouver, Washington.
He graduated from Lewis and Clark School of Law in 1951 and received his degree of Juris Doctor in 1970. He was then elected to the Board of Overseers at Lewis and Clark College. He practiced law for 33 years in La Grande from 1951-1985, also presiding as the municipal judge of the City of La Grande from 1952 to1981 and serving a term as president of the Union-Wallowa County Bar Association.
Mr. Hearing served his community in many other capacities including president of the La Grande Rotary Club, president of the EOU Foundation from 1971-1976, president of the Grande Ronde Hospital Foundation, vice-commander of the American Legion Club and vice-president of the Union-Wallowa County Chamber of Commerce. He was especially proud of serving as president of the Indian Festival of Arts.
He was a charter member of the American Legion, a member of the VFW and the BPOE #433 and a member and past president of the La Grande Country Club. He was an avid pheasant hunter. He also loved golf and was a fan of the Atlanta Braves.
On August 15, 1948, he married
Mary Ingle in La Grande. This marriage was dissolved and he married
Vera Wetzel on Sept. 5, 1975, in Newport.
Survivors include his wife, Vera of Island City; daughters and sons-in-laws, Elizabeth and Brian Oliver of Joseph and Sylvia Hearing and Ted Lawshe of Portland; step-son and his wife, Michael and Sandy Babic of La Grande; three nephews, including special nephew, Terry Sprague of Portland; and one granddaughter, Megan Oliver. A brother, Harold, and a sister, Marie Sprague, died earlier.

Caroline Daggett
Caroline Gibson Daggett died of cancer on Wednesday, April 19, 2000, at Salem.
She was born to Harry and Lola Gibson on March 9, 1940, at Joseph, and married
Howard Daggett in June 1955. She enjoyed homemaking and used her talents to make beautiful homes in several locations, having lived in Joseph, Salem, Baker City, Clatskanie, Lincoln City, Astoria, John Day, Lakeview and finally retiring to Salem. She also enjoyed cooking and entertaining family and friends.
She is survived by husband Howard and mother Lola Gibson-Taylor, both of Salem; brother David Gibson of Joseph; daughters Karen Frakes and Tammy Klassen, also of Salem; four grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Graveside services will be held Tuesday April 25 at 1 p.m. at Prairie Creek cemetery in Joseph. Contributions in her memory may be made to Willamette Valley Hospice in care of the Bollman Funeral Home, 315 W. Main St., Enterprise OR 97828
Willa Taylor
Willa Taylor passed away April 19, 2000, at the Wallowa Valley Care Center at the age of 81..
Willa was born November 4, 1918, in Milton-Freewater to John and Fern Henry. She graduated from Mac-Hi 1n 1936. She married
Eugene Richard Taylor on Oct. 7, 1939 in Pasco, Washington. Their only child, Sandra, was born in Walla Walla, Washington. They traveled to several Army bases during her husband's stay in the Army and finally settled in La Grande after his discharge. The family moved to Wallowa in 1951 where her husband was employed by his uncle, Jake Silver, at the Silver Service Station.
Willa worked part time in the local hardware store during the next several years. In 1960 they leased the service station, and she worked there with her husband until his health required his retirement. Gene passed away on August 19, 1973. Willa then returned to work at Wallowa Hardware and continued working there for the next 20-plus years.
Willa was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star and worked many years with the Rainbow Assemblies in Wallowa and Joseph. She enjoyed sewing, knitting, reading and fishing, but mostly enjoyed her three granddaughters and eventually her great-grandchildren. She lived with her granddaughter, Shelly, and family in Keizer for a year and then returned home to reside at the Wallowa Valley Care Center until her death.
She is survived by daughter Sandra Daggett and her husband, Wilfred, of Joseph; her remaining sister, Frances Wohler of Tillamook; granddaughters Shelly Walters of Keizer, Jean Marie Story of Enterprise, and Becky Best of La Grande; stepchildren David Daggett of Salt Lake City, Utah,
and Joyce Raymond of San Diego, CA; great-grandchildren Irene and Billy Walters, Wil, Chris and Ann Marie Story, Emily Best, Fay Ann and Jessy Raymond, and Katy Daggett.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her brother, her brother, Allen Henry and her sister, Dorothy Little
