RONALD LEWIS
Ronald C. Lewis, 64, of Hermiston, died June 22, 2000, of natural causes in Hermiston.
He was born Oct. 2, 1935, in Paisley to William W. Leis and Dorthy M. (Weagant) Lewis.
He was an active members of 4-H and F.F.A. He graduated from Vale Union High School in 1954. He served in the U.S. Air Force for a short term. He later married
Beverly Harm. He worked construction on major highways and dams. His main occupation and passion was ranching.
He is survived by two children, Tim Lewis and Khris Wilson; six grandchildren; two sisters, Mary Wick and Pat Hanson and a brother, Bill Lewis.
He was preceded in death by his wife Beverly M. Lewis and his parents.
A memorial service was held Wednesday, June 28, at the Cove Sportsman's Club.

MARGARET BARKER
Margaret E. Barker, 90, died at the Wallowa Memorial Hospital, June 26, 2000.
She was born Sept. 12, 1910, in Stockett, Mont., to Joseph and Cecelia Misander. Margaret was the second of six children. She graduated from high school and attended college in Kalispell, Mont.
Marge and the rest of her family moved to Enterprise in 1933. She worked for the Union Pacific Railroad for 35 years, retiring in 1973.
Survivors include two nieces, Betty Hennessey of Vancouver, WA, and Judy Stensrude of Yakima, WA; and a nephew, Jim Misander of Walla Walla, Washington.
A funeral service will be held Friday, June 30, at 10 a.m. at St. Katherine Catholic Church, 301 E. Garfield, Enterprise.
Memorial donations may be made to Community Connection of Wallowa County for the Senior Meal Program.
NORMAN WITHERRITE
Norman Witherrite was born Dec. 31, 1923, to Sylvia and Lyal Witherrite at Lime. He was the third of nine children, and grew up on the Imnaha.
Norm served in the Army Air Corp during WWII, stationed in England. He married
Fern Estes on Nov. 7, 1945. They have two children, Linda and Gary. He passed away at home on June 16, 2000, from a lingering illness. Military funeral services were held at the Prairie Creek cemetery on June 20.
He was well known to the people of Wallowa County. He drove fuel truck for Wallowa County Grain Growers, Deb Denney and Leroy Graning, and was also a Wallowa County Deputy Sheriff for several years.
That was only a small part of what Norman did. After work and on weekends he shod horses, broke and trained colts, and also found time to do beautiful leather work. Folks will enjoy his hand-crafted items for years to come – belts, purses, holsters, little replica saddles and chaps, both for work and rodeo. In fact, if you could describe it he could make it.
Norman was an active life-time member of VFW, in which he had served as commander and was always ready to help with the military services.
He was a charter member of the Wallowa County Search and Rescue unit. He loved the outdoors and riding his horses, and he even went along as camp cook for pack outfit just to be out there.
Norman is survived by his wife, Fern, of 54 years; daughter Linda Jones and husband Bill; son Gary Witherrite and wife Vickie; two grandchildren, Jonie (Witherrite) Kiser and Lorie Witherrite; one special great-grandson, Casey Kiser; two sisters, Jo Ann Banks and Rita Mae Snyder; four brothers Lyle, Weldon, Jerry, and Orson Witherrite; many nieces and nephews.
He will be missed by family and friends.
Memorial donation may be made to the Wallowa County Hospice.
MARVIN SIMMONS
Marvin Gerald Simmons, 78, died at his home on Monday, June 12, 2000.
He was born March 19, 1922, in Joseph and worked as a truck driver. He was preceded in death by his wife, Florence; his father, Daniel Edward Simmons; his mother, Eva Faye (Campbell) Simmons; and a son.
Survivors include a daughter, Jane Wharf of England; a son, Gerald Simmons of England; a brother, Vern Simmons of Enterprise; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Memorial Services will be held at Prairie Creek cemetery Thursday, June 22, at 2:00 p.m., with VFW Post 4307 officiating.

L.M. SHELTON
L.M. "Spud" Shelton of Milton-Freewater passed away April 27, 2000, in College Place, Washington, at the age of 82.
Spud was born Aug. 18, 1917, in Paradise, the son of Lawrence Dock and Freda Leona Norton Shelton. He attended grade school at Star School near Paradise. He then attended high school in Flora. Spud rode his horses to school. The family lived in the north end near Flora until 1946, then moved to Joseph in the fall.
Spud worked with his father in farming after his schooling. After living in Joseph for two years, they moved to La Grande where he and his father operated a dairy farm. They sold the dairy in 1968, and Spud then began raising chickens and selling eggs. In 1972 they moved to Hermiston and then to Milton-Freewater in 1985 to be near his family. Spud enjoyed fishing, hunting and electrical working.
He is survived by two nephews, Wayne Hockett of Milton-Freewater and Harry Hockett of Pendleton; three nieces, Dorothy Hinton and Beverly Hall, both of Milton-Freewater, and Barbara Warnock of Imnaha; and numerous great nieces and nephews.
Spud was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Lila Fleet and Vera Hockett; two brothers, Clifford and Glenn Shelton; and a niece, Bethel Wilson.
Services were held May 1 at the Hermiston cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of the donor's choice through the Munselle-Rhodes Funeral Home, 902 S. Main, Milton-Freewater, OR 97862.
WILLIAM S BROCK
William S. Brock, 92, of Enterprise died at Evergreen Rehabilitation Center in La Grande on May 29, 2000. He was born July 19, 1907, on Alder Slope to George Washington Brock and Pearl (Cannady) Brock. He was a retired mail carrier and assistant postmaster, and he enjoyed gardening, working in his shop and the woods. William was a member of the Church of the Nazarene in Enterprise
He is survived by a daughter, Cheryl Lindsley of Pasco, WA; son Arthur Brock of Lostine; brother Richard Brock of Enterprise; eight grandchildren; and 12 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Raymond S. Brock; and a brother, Wesley Brock.
Services were held on June 3, 2000, with burial at Enterprise cemetery. Donations can be made to Home Hospice c/o Bollman Funeral Home, 315 W. Main St., Enterprise, OR 97828.
RAY MUSTY
Ray L. Musty, 90, died June 2, 2000 at his home in Milton-Freewater.
One of eight children, Ray was born March 14, 1910, in Imnaha. He was the son of Nickolas and and Cora Craven Musty. He attended School District #25.
Ray worked as a sheep herder and for area farmers in Wallowa County for many years. He moved to Caldwell, Idaho, and worked for Crookham Seed Company, was a carpenter and also worked for Simplot until his retirement. He married
Ova Bledsoe Swan on May 19, 1961 in Caldwell. In 1983 they moved to Riggins, Idaho. She preceded him in death on May 25, 1991.
He moved to Milton-Freewater shortly thereafter to be near his brother and sister. Ray loved the outdoors and enjoyed tending to his flowers. In his later years he took up oil painting, and was an excellent wood carver, a hobby that he had all of his life.
Survivors include his brother and sister; Glen Musty and Margaret Hook, both of Milton-Freewater, and several nieces and nephews.

WARREN SCOTT
Warren Overton Scott, age 65, died May 28, 2000, at his home in Island City following an extended illness.
Warren was born on Feb. 16, 1935, to Benjamin Overton and Gladys H. (Duncan) Scott at the family farm in Elgin on Cricket Flat. He graduated from Elgin High School in 1953 and served with the United States Navy from 1955 to 1957. In 1961 he graduated from OIT.
On February 16, 1957, he married
Jackie Smith in San Diego, Calif.
Warren was a long time farmer/rancher in the Cricket Flat area before retiring in 1997 and moving to Island City.
He is survived by his loving wife of 43 years, Jackie, of Island City; children, Patti Scott of Twin Falls, Idaho, Melissa and Ty Walker of Las Vegas, Nev., and Russ Scott of Island City; grandchildren, Richie Scott and Joshua and Rachel Walker; special friends, Julie and Joe Hammer; sisters, Sara May Horn of Hermiston and Hilda Chamberlin of Wenatchee, WA; brother, Howard Scott of La Grande; several nieces and nephews; and other relatives and friends. His parents and a sister preceded him in death.
Private burial services were held May 31 at the Elgin cemetery, with a public memorial service at Valley Fellowship Church in La Grande.

JACOB SCHAEFER
Jacob Schaefer passed away in the Wallowa Valley Care Center, Enterprise, on May 25, 2000.
He was born on July 29, 1902, in Lewiston, Idaho, to Jacob Schaefer and Miamy Kennedy Schaefer. Jake grew up in Idaho with his younger sister and brothers.
The family moved to California in 1920, where he was self-employed in the meat business for many years. There he met and married
Jeska L. Grant in 1938. They raised three children. After living in Joseph during the 1970s -80s, the couple moved to Paradise, Calif.
Jake moved back to Wallowa County following his wife's death in 1994. A younger brother, Winston Schaefer, preceded him in death also.
Hi is survived by his children, Grant Schaefer of Joseph, Stephen Schaefer of Cincinnati, Ohio, and Joann Michaelis of Northridge, CA; his sister Madge Blackwell and brother and sister-in-law Wendell and Marylee Schaefer of California; grandchildren Jake Schaefer III of Idaho Falls, Idaho, Gina Birkmaier of Enterprise, Wendy Jo Falk of Hood River, Heidi Jones of Joseph, Jennifer and Robin Michaelis, Northridge, Calif., Scott Schaefer of Cincinnati, Ohio; and six great grandchildren.
Jake was buried on May 30 in the Prairie Creek cemetery near Joseph.
CLAIR DRIGGS
Clair R. Driggs, 66, passed away April 13, 2000, at Northwest Medical Hospital in Springdale, Ark.
Clair was the fourth of 11 children born to Bruce Driggs and Mary (Grapper) Driggs in Alta Vista, Kansas, on Nov.16, 1933. The family moved to Sandpoint, Idaho, during the Dust Bowl when Clair was a child. Clair moved to Wallowa County in 1965 and worked for numerous ranchers in the Wallowa area.
He married
Cheryl Peterson Taylor March 16, 1973. They moved to Missouri. in 1976 and then to Arkansas in 1982 where they had a dairy farm.
Clair is survived by his wife Cheryl; father and mother-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Robert O. Peterson of Wenatchee, WA, formerly of Wallowa and Lostine; 11 sons, Don, Bruce, John, Jim, Kevin, Greg, Bucky, Kenny, Jimmy, Kelly, and Tony; six daughters, Patti, Toni, Wanda, Cindy, Lori, Torie and families; some 60 grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren; four brothers; two sisters; and numerous nephews and nieces.
Memorial services were held at the Old Union cemetery in Cincinnati, Ark.
JODIE McCARTY
Jodie D. McCarty, 49, of Baker City and formerly of Wallowa and La Grande, died May 24, 2000, at her home following a long illness.
Mrs. McCarty was born Aug. 24, 1950, in La Grande to Joe and Phyllis Conner. She was raised in Wallowa, and spent her life in La Grande, Baker City and Grass Valley, Calif.
She married
Jim McCarty in La Grande in 1978. She was active in Beta Sigma Phi Sorority, and spent many years in the escrow and title business, most recently at Elkhorn Title in Baker City.
Survivors include husband Jim McCarty of Baker City; mother Phyllis Conner, Wallowa; brother; Kenneth Conner, Keizer; grandmother Inez McCrae, Wallowa; daughters, Monica McPherson of Albany, Melissa Kellem of Branson, Mo., and Karen McCarty of La Grande; son Mike McCarty of Seattle, WA; four grandchildren; and many aunts, uncles and cousins. She was preceded in death by her father.
Memorial services were held May 30, with burial at the Wallowa cemetery.

LENNIE HEARING
Lenning Juliet Hearing died on April 30, 2000 in Colville, Washington. She was born July 23, 1945 on Powwatka Ridge in Wallowa County. A memorial service will be held at a later date in Wallowa.
ROBERT BARTH
Military Memorial Services for Robert (Bob) Barth will be held at the Enterprise cemetery on Monday, May 29, at 11:15 a.m. Services will be conducted by the local VFW.
SLIM BUFFINGTON
L.C. "Slim" Buffington died in Springfield, on Friday, May 19, 2000. Mr. Buffington had been in failing health the past year.
He was born on July 2, 1918, and married
Ruby Gilbert in 1943. His parents, Wm. P. and Agnes Buffington lived on Upper Diamond Lane in Wallowa, and Slim and Ruby lived on the McMichael Ranch where he was employed. They moved to Springfield in 1959 where he was an employee of Eugene Water & Electric Board until his retirement.
He is survived by his wife, Ruby, in Springfield and a brother, Bill Buffington and his family in the Seattle, Washington, area.
He will be missed and remembered by family and many friends in both Wallowa County and the Eugene-Springfield.
JOHN CAMERON
John Keith Cameron, 74, of Adrian passed away May 18, 2000 in Boise, Idaho. He was born Nov. 23, 1925 in Twin Falls, Idaho to John Emery Cameron and Edith Matilda (Davis) Cameron. He married
Georgia E. Ward on June 29, 1950. They lived on a farm in Adrian where three children were born. In 1957 they moved to Wallowa where their fourth child was born. The family moved back to Adrian in 1969. Their life was spent between Adrian and Wallowa throughout the years.
He loved to farm, raise cows, breaking and ride horses, and fish. He enjoyed his grandchildren, great-grandchildren and the many friends he had.
Survivors include his wife, Georgia of Adrian; sons, Ray Cameron of Lostine and John Cameron of Adrian; daughters, Louise Burck of Elgin and Linda Williams of Lewiston, Idaho; one brother Emery Cameron, of Adrian; 11 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters.
Services were held May 22 in the Owyhee Ward of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, with graveside services at the Wallowa cemetery on May 23, 2000.
