Fredrick "Fred" Harold Coffman
Fredrick "Fred" Harold Coffman lost his battle with throat cancer July 26, 2005.
Fred was born on January 29, 1915 in Jacksonville to Merton and Margaret (Schumpf) Coffman. He was a great-grandson of Oregon pioneers who settled in the valley. He had a photographic memory and rarely forgot anything or anyone. He had lots of stories about his childhood, swimming in the Jacksonville Reservoir, hiking, playing in the Rich Gulch area, and walking to Medford barefoot on the gravel road. When he was 12, he had his first job selling newspapers. He also worked for Western Union delivering messages by bicycle. He would drop out of school to work and then go back to school. He always said, "he got kicked out of school in the third grade for not shaving." In his late teens he moved to Scott Valley, CA. Eventually he graduated from Fort Jones High School in 1936.
He moved back to the Rogue Valley where he worked in orchards and packing houses.
In 1938, Fred got a job in a bakery in Klamath Falls.
On April 22, 1939 in Reno, NV he married
Marylois "Arlene" Inman. The newlywed couple lived in Klamath Falls, where they enjoyed ice skating and hunting trips.
In 1946, he moved his family to the Central Point area. He watched someone laying bricks, and decided he could do that. He and his wife built their house and lived there until he died.
Hunting was always an important part of his life. He taught us the beauty of the mountains, enjoying the scenery, good food and good company. Fred also liked to hunt mushrooms, pick huckleberries, collect rocks, take drives in the mountains and "just resting his eyes" while snoring loudly. He was known as "Huntin Grandpa" to one great-grandson.
He was an avid reader of anything BUT fiction. He was a historian on Southern Oregon and the Klamath area. He took his children on many day trips, teaching them history, science and geography. His daughter, Marlena, put up a mural of a forest scene with deer. He cut out bird pictures and added them to the trees. Whenever you came to visit, you always looked to find his latest addition.
Fred is survived by his daughters, Sharon Williams of Central Point, Marlena Coffman of Estacada, Shirley (Tom) Robinson of Jacksonville, and Dyan (Matt) Snook of LaGrande; daughter-in-law, Sharon Coffman of Central Point; 15 grandchildren, Joan, Tony, Rebekah, Leesa, Scott, Tracey, Sheryl, Katy, Emily, Leah, Jennifer, Ryan, Jessica, Anna and Mary; 17 great-grandchildren, Chris, Luke, Duncan, Lynzie, Thomas, Jordan, Sara, Makena, Kiera, Jillian, Violet, Caden, Jaden, Austin, Tanner, Elijah, and Sofia; and step-grandchildren, Tiffany and Kayl. He was preceded in death by his wife, Arlene; son, Errol Coffman; and great-granddaughter, Lilie Robinson.
Because Fred enjoyed the family wiener roasts, please join us in one as we remember him and celebrate his life at 1 p.m. Saturday, August 20, 4980 Brownsboro Road, Eagle Point.
Our Fred will be remembered for his sense of humor, his love of history, his family, hunting, the mountains and roads less traveled.
He was always the best Dad and Grandpa that he knew how to be.

Lola Mae Straube Vogel
March 23, 1919 to March 22, 2006
"Behind every good man is a great woman." Three months after the loss of her husband of 64 years, Lola followed him to the next world. She was born March 23, 1919 to Sophie and Fred Straube, at Lane Creek, near Central Point. She was called to be with Ray one day short of her 87th birthday.
Lola grew up in the Applegate on the family farm, and then moved to her Aunt Kitty's in Glendale to attend high school. After graduation, she worked on the home farm until her marriage to Ray Vogel on November 22, 1941 in Seattle, where together they worked at Boeing for the war effort. Lola was a Rosie the Rivetor for four years until they moved back to Central Point and started their own dairy farm, which is still in operation to this day. She did all the daily chores and tended a beautiful garden with great pleasure until ill health forced her retirement at age 84.
She leaves behind David and Paige Wolff and their daughter, Jania; her brother, Louie; numerous nephews and nieces; and loving in-laws by marriage.
Lola was indescribably hardworking, loving, compassionate, and had a true heart of gold, willing to give anyone anything they wanted or needed. She loved her husband more than life itself and her family was precious to her all throughout her life. She loved all her cows, especially the mostly white ones. Because of her petite shape, she enjoyed making her own clothes, and was always in style with the perfect fit. Year after year, her family adored her holiday meals and those who visited more often, left content every time. She was a homemaker, farmer, mother to anyone who needed mothering, and one of the best dairy maids ever.
Whatever she put her hand to, she did it well and with all her might. She was wonderful and we dearly miss her.
Memorial services will be held Saturday, April 8th at 1:00 p.m. at Hillcrest Chapel, 2201 N. Phoenix Rd., Medford. Arrangements by Conger-Morris Funeral Directors of Medford.
