Raymond J. Brood
A service will be held for Raymond J. Brood in the Hillcrest Memorial Park chapel at 1 p.m. on Friday, February 3, 2006. Visitation hours are Friday after 8 a.m. and until shortly before the service.
Mr. Brood, age 91, passed away the evening of January 25, 2006. In the comfort of his home of nearly 52 years on Dark Hollow Road, he slipped quietly into the arms of the Lord under the watch-care of his family.
Raymond was born June 14, 1914, in Mellette County, South Dakota. He was the first of 13 children welcomed into the home of Gilbert F. and Mabel L. (Walker) Brood.
When he retired in 1976, Raymond had been a partner in Arlie and Emile's Repair shop on South Fir Street in Medford since 1948. His first job after coming to the Rogue Valley in 1936 with his bride, Carol Gere, was driving cat and doing equipment repair for the 401 Orchard. A mechanic by trade, but farmer at heart, he designed and built numerous tools and special parts needed for the home farm.
During WWII he served as a civilian specialist doing machinist work for Camp White while employed at Littrel Parts in downtown Medford.
As a young man growing up in White River, he did whatever kind of work was available during the drought and early days of the depression -- from driving truck to breaking horses the gentle way.
He enjoyed fly-fishing Little Butte, gardening, and trekking to Klamath for duck hunting with his Dad and sons or several good friends. He was an avid reader, a whistler, and played the harmonica.
Ray, as most folks knew him, was a stay-at-home guy, who enjoyed talking shop, delighted in taking his grandchildren for tractor trailer rides, and considered his daughters-in-law as his own. He took care to be a good neighbor and especially valued his longtime neighbors who stayed in touch.
He will be remembered as a disciplined man, principled by the Christian way of life, a proud Grandpa, and a wise, prudent but generous and caring father. Above all, he was a faithful, committed husband, devoted to his beloved Carol, best friend and "Pal" of sixty-nine and a half years, who preceded him in death September 15, 2005. He is also preceded by his parents and 9 of his 12 siblings.
