Jessyca Baxter
A memorial service to celebrate the life of Jessyca Baxter will be at 2 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 25, 2005 in the Butte Falls Park.

Jessie, 58, of Butte Falls, died Sept. 14 2005, of colon cancer, with her loving husband by her side.

She was born on Sept. 29, 1946 in Medford to Gladys Lucille Ellis and Frank Cavin. She attended Crater High in Central Point.

Jessie loved trips to the coast and spending time with her family. She enjoyed hunting, fishing and really enjoyed playing the poker machines.

Survivors include her husband, Raymond; two daughters, Tressa Turner and Angie Banks; a son Garland Carson; a step-daughter Laura Wicker; her brothers, Charles and Joe Cavin, her sister, Kenetha Rodriquez; and 11 grandkids. She was preceded in death by her mother and father, a step-father, Clifford Cornelius; two uncles, one aunt, a granddaughter, and a great-grandson.

Lt. Col. Morris S. “Jim” Shimanoff, USMC (Ret'd)
Lt. Col. Morris S. “Jim” Shimanoff, USMC (Ret'd) passed away on Tuesday, September 20th at Skylark Enhanced Care in Ashland. Memorial service will be held on Thursday, September 22, 3:00 p.m. at Eagle Point National cemetery.

He was born in Bridgeton, New Jersey on October 12, 1926 to Abraham and Clara (Chazanoff) Shimanoff. When he was three years old the family moved to Brooklyn, New York. On August 21, 1947 he married his wife of 58 years, the former Adele Berres, in New York City, who survives.

He enlisted in the U. S. Marine Corps in 1944 as a private and retired 27 years later with the rank of Lt. Colonel. When he was promoted to master sergeant while still an enlisted man he was the youngest sergeant major in the Marine Corps. He received a field commission in 1953. While on active duty he earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree from Park College in Parkville, MO. He was stationed overseas in Panama, Okinawa, Japan, and Vietnam, as well as all the major Marine bases in the U.S. Upon his retirement, March 31, 1971, he was awarded the Legion of Merit.

As a civilian he served as the Director of the Office of Consumer Affairs, Orange County, while living in Irvine, California. In 1977 the family moved to Grants Pass, Oregon where they had a small ranch and raised miniature animals under the name of “Adele's Adorables.” While in Grants Pass he was active in the Marine Corps League, became a life member, and served as Commandant of the Rogue Valley Detachment. He was also active in the Oregon Mr. Longears Society, The American Donkey and Mule Society, the Josephine County Humane Society, and the Charlie Brown Squares. He attended Southern Oregon State College, earned a Master's Degree, and subsequently served as a part time instructor at Rogue Community College. He also attended the University of Oregon Law School. He was an avid reader.

In 1991 the family moved to Central Point. He was involved with the Roxy Ann Gem and Mineral Society and the Crater Rock Museum and served one year as president. He donated blood through the years and received a pin for 17 gallons. He was a volunteer at the Central Point Library for four years. In May of 2000 they moved to the Mountain Meadows Retirement Community in Ashland and six months later he entered the Enhanced Care Unit of Skylark Assisted Living.

He is survived by his wife Adele, three sons--Perry (Susan) of San Carlos, California, Andrew of Eugene, Oregon, and Jeffrey (Denise) of Kailua, Hawaii and daughter Ellen Smith (Kage) of Ashland, nine grandchildren, Alexis, Lael, Saul, Arianne, Christopher, Jackson, Patrick Shimanoff, Jacqueline and Brendan Curry, two step-grandchildren, Heidi Smith and Stacey Harvey, and three step-great-grandchildren, and one sister, Freda Zalman of Tamarac, FL. In addition to his parents he was predeceased by three brothers, William, Sidney and David, and one sister, Jennie Semel.

Memorial donations may be made to the Alzheimer's Association or to Rogue Valley Hospice.

Robert Edward Duff
A memorial service for Robert Edward Duff will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, September 24, 2005 at Veterans Domiciliary Chapel in White City. Pastor Bob Roth of the First Church of the Nazarene will officiate.

Mr. Duff, 49, died September 17, 2005 at his home in Gold Hill.

He was born on Oct. 26, 1955 in Massachusetts. He was raised by his Uncle Dusty and Aunt Jeannie Rouse who preceded him in death. He lived in the Rogue Valley and Northern California for the past 30 years. On Aug. 7, 1992 in Yreka, CA, he married Tish M. Barnes who survives.

Mr. Duff worked as a logger all over Northern California and Southern Oregon.

He enjoyed hunting, fishing, cutting firewood and camping.

In addition to his wife, survivors include two sons, Jeremiah Duff, of Yreka, CA, and James Brummett of Medford; a daughter, Nicholle Brummett of Gold Hill; his mother, Connie Wolf of Michigan; five sisters; one brother; and one granddaughter.

Robert T. "Bob" Ohrt
Robert T. "Bob" Ohrt, Lt. Col. Ret., USAF, died peacefully as he slept next to his loving wife of 62 years, Corinne Muller Ohrt.

Bob was born to Norman and Sigfrid Ohrt and raised in the Medford, OR area. He and Corinne married in Manette, WA on April 25, 1943, which was an Easter Sunday.

He joined the US Army Air Corps in 1943 and was commissioned as a 2nd Lt. in one of the first Air Force Officer Classes. He served as a bombardier in the Pacific during WWII and later went to pilot training, serving with the 319th, 339th, and 68th fighter squadrons. During his military career he was accorded numerous awards. Upon retirement from the Air Force in 1969 Bob began his second career in Anchorage, AK, as a real estate broker, where he owned several firms. In 1983 Bob and Corinne returned to Lakewood, WA to be closer to family and many lifelong friends. Bob continued to sell real estate and was a broker in the Tacoma area.

Bob's zest for life was evident in his twinkling blue eyes and infectious laugh. He loved flying, boating, sailing, skiing, and hunting, and he delighted in teaching his children and grandchildren to share his passions. Over the years Bob and Corinne had vacation homes which became the highlight of the summer for many of their relatives and friends. They were gracious and fun hosts, and their door was always open.

He was a proud member of the Order of Daedalians and the Elks Club.

Bob was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Dan of Seattle, and his sister Mary Ann Ohrt Freeburg of Bellingham. He leaves a living legacy in his family and friends including his wife Corinne of Lakewood; daughter and son-in-law Kathleen and Art Kennedy of Aiken, SC; son and daughter-in-law Bob Ohrt, Jr. and wife Judy of Lakewood, WA; grandchildren Capts. Jerod and Leslie Rick (Luke AFB & Balad AB) Lt. Isaac and Bronwyn Philips (NAS Norfolk), Dillion & Michele Ohrt of Denver, CO Mollie Ohrt of Coeur d'Alene, ID, and Logan Ohrt of Aiken, SC; great-grandsons, Thompson and Carson Rick, and Samuel and Peter Philips; his brother, Wallace Ohrt and sister-in-law Betty; sister-in-law Jean Ohrt, and brother-in-law Carlin Freeburg, as well as numerous nephews and nieces.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial to the Myasthenia Gravis Foundation or the Daedalian Scholarship Fund.

The memorial and celebration of his life was held on Sept. 2, 2005 in Tacoma, WA.

Daniel Joseph Elkin
Daniel Joseph Elkin, 21, of Medford, Oregon died December 30, 2005 in Medford.

The Memorial service will be held at the Applegate Christian Fellowship on Saturday, January 7, 2006 at 10:00 a.m. Officiating will be Web Staunton of Applegate Christian Fellowship. Memorial contributions can be made to Carmen Serdan Orphanage, c/o Applegate Christian Fellowship.

Dan was born August 20, 1984 to Christopher and Danna Elkin. He lived in the Rogue Valley all of his life. He had attended Phoenix High School and was employed at Sprint Corporation.

His hobbies included his family, music composition, playing guitar, muscle cars, tae kwon do, movies and drag racing. Dan was an artist and a self-taught musician. He was gifted, meek and kind.

Survivors include his grandparents, Jeannine Letzerich, Harlan and Mary Ann Elkin; sisters, Teresa Jordan, Christina Elkin and Alyssa Elkin; brother, Jacob Elkin; brother-in-law, Joshua Jordan; and niece, Sarah Ruth Elkin. He was preceded in death by his uncle, Kevin Elkin.

Debra Harrison
in loving memory A memorial service to celebrate the life of Debra Harrison will be from 3 to 6 p.m. Sunday, January 8, 2006, at Mojo Rising, 140 Lithia Way, Ashland.

Debra was born on November 2, 1950 and died on November 25, 2005.

Debra was loved by everyone who had the good fortune to know her.

She leaves behind many true friends. She will be missed by all and never forgotten.

Ellen B. Faison
Ellen, 90, of Medford passed away January 4, 2006. She was born on February 10, 1915 in Anaconda, Montana to Minnie and John Maslover. She was the oldest of nine children. Ellen married Harry Faison on January 22, 1939 in Florence, Arizona.

Ellen loved her family and always woke with a smile on her face, content with life. She was Worthy Matron of Mission Bell Chapter of Eastern Star, 1977, and in later years she enjoyed collecting dolls, trips to Seven Feathers, scenic rides and playing bingo. She was an avid fan of Harley Davidson motorcycles and was made an honorary member of the Jezebel Motorcycle Club.

She is survived by her son, John Barrowdale of Globe, Arizona; daughter, Barbara Hitzelberger of Medford; five sisters, one brother, nine grandchildren, seventeen great grandchildren, and one great great grandchild.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Harry; son, Chris; grandson, John; and two sisters.

A memorial service will be held 2:00 p.m. Monday, January 9, at Orchards Assisted Living, 1018 Royal Ct., Medford.

Justine Miller Emmens
Justine Miller Emmens, 90, of Medford, Oregon died January 2nd, 2006. There are no services planned.

Justine was born May 21, 1915 in Medford to Alfred and Dollie (Ankeny) Miller, an Oregon Pioneer family. She graduated from Medford High School and went on to attend college in Ashland and the University of Oregon, where she was a member of Alpha Phi Sorority.

Justine had been an usher at the Holly Theatre and worked at the Medford Power Company. On October 14, 1939, she married Robert G. Emmens. She traveled with the family to Romania, Austria, Japan and around the United States.

She was an equestrian and rode in the Ashland 4th of July parades in the 1920's. Justine volunteered as a Pink Lady at Rogue Valley Medical Center. She was an avid bridge player and was a member of the Gold Diggers and Colony Club. She also attended Doolittle Raid reunions until recently.

Survivors include a daughter, Robin Emmens; son, Michael and his wife Teresa; three grandchildren and an increasing number of great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Robert; sister, Peggy; and recently by her son Thomas Emmens.

Memorial contributions can be made to the Southern Oregon Historical Society or the Jackson County Humane Society.

The family expresses deep gratitude to KC's Adult Foster Home, Providence Hospice and the LaFever family, who adopted Justine's beloved dog, Heidi.

Muriel Jean Gifford
If there is golf in heaven, Muriel Jean Gifford is "teeing it up" on the front nine with her identical twin sister, Marion, her first husband, Gordon, and her Lord Jesus Christ.

Muriel, a native Oregonian, went to be in heaven January 3, 2006, in Medford, Oregon. She was 83.

She loved her Lord, she loved her family, and she loved to play golf, usually in that order. And she did all three well. She was a "prayer warrior", loving wife and mother, and she was the Rogue Valley Country Club women's champion in 1965 and again in 1984.

She and Marion were born on October 10, 1922, in Eugene, Oregon to Arthur and Marie (Brown) Olson. The girls were raised behind the family general store in Creswell, Oregon. After working in the store and having the "run-of-the-town" as a child, Muriel attended the University of Oregon. She was a member of Alpha Omicron Pi sorority and a lifelong Duck fan. She graduated in 1944 as a member of Beta Gamma Sigma, business honor society. She married Gordon Reeves in Eugene, on August 30, 1947 after he persuaded her not to have a double wedding with her sister, who two weeks prior married Stanley Marshall. Muriel and Gordon moved with daughters Marsha and Janet from Eugene to Medford in 1960.

In addition to golfing with the Rogue Valley Women's Association, she worked in medical offices in Medford and Central Point. She retired in 1988 as office manager of Anesthesia Associates of Medford. She was an active member of Westminster Presbyterian Church as a deacon, financial secretary, Sunday school teacher and choir member. After Gordon went to be with the Lord in 1985, she married Gordon's good friend and golfing buddy, Randall Gifford on August 20, 1988 in Medford.

She was preceded in death by her parents, twin sister Marion Marshall and her first husband, Gordon Reeves. She is survived by her husband, Randall Gifford; daughters, Marsha (Lou) Homan and Janet (Mike)Thornton; grandson, Brent Homan; granddaughters, Kelsey, Breanne and Jessica Thornton; as well as, three great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, January 7, 2006 at 2 p.m. at Westminster Presbyterian Church.

Contributions in her memory may be made to Food and Friends Senior Meals Program and Rogue Valley Youth for Christ.

Roy William Dahl
Roy William Dahl, 95, of Medford, died January 3, 2006 at his home.

A celebration of his life will be Friday, January 6, 2006, 1:30pm at Horton Plaza.

Roy was born January 13, 1910 in Eureka, Ca. He loved the outdoors and spending time with his "coffee buddies." He was a member of the Teamsters Local #70 in Oakland, CA for 44 years. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge as a Royal Arch Masonic High Priest. All who knew Roy were blessed by his smile, sense of humor and all the rhymes for any occasion. He will be dearly missed by all who loved him.

Roy was preceded in death by his loving wife of 48 years, Marie H.; three brothers, Chester A. Dahl, Walter A. Dahl, Donald D. Dahl; and sister Edith M. Caya. Survivors include his brother-in-law Robert Nelson (Elsie) of WI, Minnie Amundson of MN, Beulah Olson of MN, and Lorraine Roppe of ND; and many nieces and nephews.

Inurnment will be at Chapel of the Chimes in Oakland, Ca.

Arrangements are with Perl Funeral Home.
