Mary Lois East
Mary Lois East passed away on November 11, 2005, in Medford, Oregon. She was 90.

Born November 4, 1915 in Huntington, West Virginia to Myrtle Henderson East and Wyatt Crawford East, she lived most of her life in Southern California. Her life partner of 52 years, Nina VanSickel, preceded her in death, as did all of her siblings.

Lois is survived by nieces, Julia Holly East of Ashland, Mary D. East of Tampa, FL, and Lynn Hunter East of Naples, FL; and nephews, John Hunter East, Jr. of Naples, FL, and Robert Henderson East, Jr., of Irvine, KY.

A memorial service will be held graveside in Orange, California at a later date. In lieu of flowers, please make a contribution to the charity of your choice in her name.

Oscar V. Johnson
A private family service will be held for Oscar Victor Johnson, 72, of Ashland, who died Wednesday, November 9, 2005 at the Ashland Community Hospital.

He was born March 16, 1933 at Walhalla, North Dakota, the son of Malwfuder and Bjarni Johnson. He attended the Sacramento Jr. College and the University of Omaha in Omaha, Nebraska. He married Gail Kohr on August 31, 1956 at Wichita Falls, Texas.

Mr. Johnson served in the United States Air Force from 1953 to 1973 and retired as a Lt Col. Following his military retirement, Mr. and Mrs. Johnson moved to Ashland in 1974.

His hobbies include building computers and classic car restoration. He was a member of the Ashland Elks Lodge, Order of Daedaligns and the Red River Valley Fighter Pilots Association.

Surviving are his wife, Gail of Ashland; one daughter, Lea Ann Knorr of Colorado Springs, CO; one son, Barney Johnson of Ashland; one sister, Ann Lewis of Sacramento, CA; one brother, Barney Johnson of Brookings; and three grandchildren: Jake, Anna, and Jessalynn.

He was preceded in death by an infant son, Timothy Andrew; his parents; two sisters; and two brothers.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. Joseph's Indian School in Chamberlain, SD 57326; or to the Diabetes Care Center, 2900 E. Barnett, Ste #2, Medford, OR 97504.

SPC. Matthew "Matt" D. Gregg
Funeral services for Spc. Matthew Douglas Gregg will be held on Monday, November 14, at 2:30 p.m. at Willamette National cemetery in Portland. A local memorial service will be held on Wednesday, November 16 at 1 p.m. at Table Rock Fellowship in Medford.

Matt, 30, of Medford, died Sunday, November 6, 2005 near Sunny Valley while on duty with the Army National Guard.

Matt was the loving father of Travis and beloved husband of Jill.

Matt is also survived by his parents, Doug and Judy Gregg of Portland; brother, Michael Gregg of Portland; and grandmother, Amy Hart of Vancouver, WA.

Matt was a devoted father, husband, son, brother, friend and patriot.

Matt was a proud soldier and will be remembered for his humor and willingness to be available to help whenever and wherever needed.

Matt will be so greatly missed by his family and friends. He would be truly touched by the outpouring of support from family, friends, the National Guard, and community.

"Good men fall to protect us all. This is the land of the free because of the brave."

Larry D. Kemper
Larry D. Kemper, age 58, of Medford, died Thursday, November 10, 2005 at Providence Medford Medical Center. Arrangements by Abbey Funeral.

Perry Easterbrooks
Perry Easterbrooks, age 73, of Medford, died Saturday, November 12, 2005 at his residence. Arrangements: Abbey Funeral.

John F. Zimmerlee Jr.
Lifetime Rogue Valley outdoorsman, John Zimmerlee Jr. was born on July 23, 1950 in Medford, Oregon to John and Edna Zimmerlee. He died of a heart attack on November 10, 2005 while on a hunting trip to northeastern Oregon.

John is survived by his wife of 37 years, Pat-Harris-Zomerdyk-Zimmerlee; his three daughters, Tammy Hukill and Shelly Cowan of Klamath Falls and Janie Rives of White City; three grandsons, Zak and Brock Cowan and Chase Hukill; three sisters, Dawn Barham of Medford, Charlotte Ayres of Eagle Point and Teresa Zimmerlee of Portland. He was preceded in death by his father John Zimmerlee Sr. and one sister Nita Copley.

Graveside services will be held today, Tuesday, November 15, 2005 at 3 p.m. at the Johnson cemetery in Shady Cove, Oregon.

Mary Alice Virginia Jones
Mary Alice Virginia Jones, age 82, former resident of Medford and Ashland, died on Friday, Nov. 11, 2005 in Klamath Falls. Graveside services, officiated by Rev. John Braund, will be held at Scenic Hills Memorial Park in Ashland on Thursday, November 17, at 11 a.m.

She is survived by her sister, M. Yovonna Stimson of Wyoming; nieces, Lynn (Chapman) Allen of Twin Falls, Idaho, and Brenda Shawn Abel of Texas; numerous great nieces and nephews; and special friend Lee Crutchfield. Her parents Lloyd I. & Ethel V. (Runmel) Stimson and her husband John Lewis Jones preceded her in death.

Arrangements: 0'Hair & Riggs Funeral Chapel, Klamath Falls.

Perry Easterbrooks
Perry Easterbrooks, age 73, went to be with the Lord on November 12, 2005.

Perry was born November 15, 1931 in Bellingham, Washington.

He served his country with the United States Navy aboard the U.S.S. Hector during the Korean War. On August 23, 1959, he married his wife, Margaret, with whom he had been married for the past 46 years.

Perry graduated with a Bachelor of Arts from Western Washington University in June of 1960 and in July, 1979, graduated from San Diego State University with a Master of Arts in Vocational Education. He taught in the San Diego Unified School District for 31 years. As a Junior High teacher, he specialized in graphic arts and photography but also taught industrial arts, math and science.

Away from his career, Perry enjoyed photography, bird watching, woodworking and serving the Lord in the Gideons.

He is survived by his wife, Margaret; brother, John; sisters, Ann and Marcene; his three children, Connie, Cindy and Ron; and his seven grandchildren, Austin, Kyle, Madison, Chelsea, Brooke, Karl and Shane.

Memorial services will be held today, Tuesday, November 15, 2005 at the Eagle Point National cemetery at 3 p.m.

Memorial contributions may be made in Perry's honor to, the Rogue Valley Gideons Southcamp; P.O. Box 1267; Medford, Oregon 97501.

Randy Vosika
A special son, brother, friend A memorial service to celebrate the life of Randy Vosika will be at 3 p.m. Friday, Nov. 18, 2005 at Memory Gardens, Medford. Randy, 49, of Ashland, died Friday (Nov. 11, 2005) in Ashland.

He was born on Dec. 10, 1955 in Medford to Doug and Deloras Vosika.

He worked at Living Opportunities.

Randy was a member of ARC of Jackson County and participated in the Special Olympics.

Survivors include his mother, Deloras of Medford; his brothers, Larry of Medford and Dennis of Veneta, OR; a sister Cherolyn Rode of Westlake Village, CA; He was preceded in death by his father.

Those who knew Randy couldn't help but love him. His quick infectious laugh made everyone smile.

SPC. Matthew D. Gregg
A memorial service to celebrate the life of and pay tribute to SPC. Matthew "Matt" Douglas Gregg will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 16, at Table Rock Fellowship, in Medford. A funeral service at Willamette National cemetery has been held.

Matt 30, of Medford, died Sunday, November 6, in Sunny Valley while serving his country in the U.S. Army National Guard.

Walter A. Graff, 93, of Medford, died M onday (Nov. 14, 2005) at his home. Arrangements: Conger-Morris Funeral Directors, Medford.

Anna M. Schwarz
Anna Marguerite Schwarz, beloved mother of Nan Schwarz and Patricia Highfill, passed away on Thursday, October 27th, at the age of 89.

She was born in Quincy, IL to Ida and Louis Kuenstler who dispelled the gloom of poverty with art and amateur dramatics. She married in 1942 and began the arduous life of a military wife.

preceded in death by her husband, USMC MSgt. Warren Schwarz of New Orleans, she remained a valued employee of Altec Corporation for over 20 years. Attending night class, Ann became an avid and able watercolorist. After retirement, she traveled the Pacific NW extensively before settling in Ashland in 1989.

She leaves behind one sister, Geannie Nachtwey of Chicago; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

No formal service is planned. Her ashes will be scattered with love by the sea.

Beverly Anne Brown
Author and social justice activist, Beverly Anne Brown died in Portland on October 27, 2005, after a long struggle with cancer.

She was born February 21, 1951, in Fresno, California, to Ann L. and Elton John Brown. She grew up in Redding, California, and attended Reed College in Portland, Oregon.

She wrote In Timber Country: Working People's Stories of Environmental Conflict and Urban Flight and co-edited, with Agueda Marín-Hernández, Voices From the Woods: Lives and Experiences of Non-Timber Forest Workers. Her last project was a comparative study of contract forest workers in Canada, Mexico, and the USA.

In the late 1970s, Beverly fought the threat of surface strip mining in southern Oregon. She was active in the womens and lesbian liberation movements and, in 1983, founded Maize: A Lesbian Country Magazine.

While working at Rogue Community College in Grants Pass in the late 1980s and 1990s, Beverly began chronicling the stories of people living in the region's timber towns. In 1994, she founded the Jefferson Center for Education and Research, serving as its director through 2004. She was committed to creating space for dialogue among diverse peoples about their lives, work, and community.

For many years she lived in Sunny Valley, Oregon, with her long-time partner Tee Corinne. One of her great pleasures was cultivating the beautiful garden at their home.

Beverly is survived by her mother, Ann L. Clark of Redding, California; her brother, Ronald J. Brown of Lacey, Washington; and by a large community of friends.

The Beverly A. Brown Papers are housed in Special Collections and University Archives at the University of Oregon. She willed her body to the medical school at Oregon Health & Science University.

Her ashes will be returned to her Sunny Valley garden.

A southern Oregon memorial will be held Saturday, November 12, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Sunny Valley Town Hall, located on the grounds of the Applegate Trail Interpretive Center in Sunny Valley. A Portland gathering will be held on November 19, from 2 – 5 p.m. at the Leach Botanical Garden, 6704 SE 122nd.

Contributions in honor of Beverly's memory may be made to the Jefferson Center at P.O. Box 12190, Portland, Oregon 97212.

Luella Henrietta Tonsfeldt
Luella Henrietta Tonsfeldt, 93, died Friday, November 4, 2005 in Ashland, OR.

Luella was born on October 24, 1912 to William and Fredericka Lamp in Moody County, South Dakota. On August 24, 1940 she married Harold Tonsfeldt, who preceded her in death in 1987. They farmed and ranched for many years in Lake Wilson and Pipestone, Minnesota, and Elkton, South Dakota. In 1974 they retired and moved to Ashland.

Luella was a homemaker and enjoyed sewing, crafts, tending her flowers, and baking. For many years she was a member of the Chatterso extension club in Pipestone.

Luella is survived by her daughter, Beverly (Mrs. Dennis) Sweet, of Ashland and granddaughters Michelle of Portland and Jana of Medford; also many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at the Presbyterian Church in Pipestone, MN on Saturday, November 12, 2005 at 1 p.m.

Memorial contributions may be made to Ashland Community Hospital Foundation for Ashland Community Hospital Hospice, P. O. Box 98, Ashland, OR 97520.
