Ola DeWees, 86, of Eagle Point, passed away Monday, November 7, 2005 at Providence Medford Medical Center. Arrangements: Rogue Valley Funeral Alternatives, Medford.

John D. Murphy
John Davenport Murphy, 87, was born March 25, 1918 in Ashland, Oregon to Blanche Davenport and John Murray Murphy. He attended and graduated from Ashland Normal School. He later attended Southern Oregon State Normal School and the University of Oregon.

As a young boy, he enjoyed riding his horse and participating in the Ashland Roundups. He enjoyed Friday evenings at the Bellview Grange participating in a wide variety of activities.

John was a good athlete, lettering in basketball and baseball. He served in World War II in Germany as a sergeant 1st Class. He was employed by Fortmillers Department Store in Ashland, Cop-Co of Rogue River, Oregon and retired from the City of Ashland as a purchasing agent.

He was a 50 year member and Past Exalted Ruler of Lodge #944 A.F.& A.M. He enjoyed the game of golf and spending time outdoors, especially herding cattle with Jim Miller on the Murphy Ranch, the Greensprings, and Buck Prairie. He spent his last years as a daily frequenter to the Old Murphy Ranch site of the Murphy Historical Barn built in 1858 by his great-grandfather, John Jacob Murphy.

John is preceded in death by his sister Florence, a sister, Mary Louise, his father, John Murphy, and his mother, Blanche. He is survived by an only daughter, Dian L. Murphy of Madison, WI.

At his request, no services are planned. Cremation arrangements under the direction of Litwiller-Simonsen Funeral Home and Crematory, Ashland.

Omer Avon "Chick" Crose
Omer Avon Crose, 94, of Eagle Point, died Thursday, Nov. 3 at Hearthstone in Medford. Known to family and friends as "Chick", a nickname he received a a child who loved to play with baby chicks.

Chick was born on Dec. 23, 1910 in Hanford, CA. He was the ninth of eleven children.

Chick married Minnie Burnett on July 7, 1934. He worked as a master welder throughout the agricultural industry in central California. During WW II, he welded on Navy ships in the Bay area. The Crose's lived in Hanford, Tulare and Coalinga, California before moving to Oregon in the 1970s. They lived in Turner, Amity and Salem, and settled Eagle Point in 1991.

Chick enjoyed discussing politics and history, reading, playing pool and cards, traveling, gardening and spending time with family and friends. He was a man of great faith and lived a life of honesty and integrity.

He is survived by his wife, Minnie; sister, Dorothy Richards of Stockton, CA; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. They had no children of their own, but opened their home to two foster sons, Chuck and Paul Pearce. His "adopted" Oregon family includes Jerry & Mary Scheffler, "grandchildren", David, Joe and Heidi, as well as five "great-grandchildren", Ryan, Ian, Jack, Alyson and Reagan Scheffler.

A memorial service will be held Sunday, Nov. 13, 2005 at 6:30 p.m. at Eagle Cove Assisted Living Community in Eagle Point.

Arrangements: Memory Gardens Mortuary, Medford.

Richard Lee Osborn
Richard Lee Osborn, age 56, of Medford, died unexpectedly November 4, 2005.

Services are scheduled for 3 p.m. on Sunday, November 13, at the Presbyterian Church of the Roses in Santa Rosa, California.

Richard was the loving father of Alison Osborn Grant. He is also survived by granddaughter, Anna Grant of Tuscon, Arizona; mother, Eleanor Osborn of Birmingham, Michigan; sisters, Victoria Matishen of Somerdale, New Jersey and Joan Henkle of Carmel, Indiana; and brother, Mark Osborn of Palo Alto, California. He was the uncle to six and great-uncle to three. He is also survived by Beverly Swift of Santa Rosa, California. Rick was a beloved, longtime friend to an extraordinary number of people including extended family members and in-laws. He was preceded in death by his father, Richard Osborn of Birmingham, Michigan.

Ruth Pauline Donaldson
Ruth Pauline Donaldson, 86, of Medford, died November 7, 2005 at Rogue Valley Manor Health Center.

A funeral mass will be today Friday, November 11, 2005 at 10 a.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church.

Ruth was born on June 5, 1919 in Great Falls, MT. She graduated from Great Falls High School and attended Montana State. On December 24, 1941 in Petersburg, VA she married Norman Donaldson.

Ruth worked for General Electric in Office Administration, later she and her husband started and operated a carnival business providing fund raising services to schools, churches, military and other charitable organizations. She moved to the Rogue Valley in 1995 from Arroyo Grande, CA.

A member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, she was active in parish churches and children's schools. Ruth enjoyed crossword and jigsaw puzzles.

Survivors include a daughter, Susan Fagan of Freano, CA; a son, Steven of Anaheim, CA; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Arrangements are with Perl Funeral Home.

Claude F. Womack, Jr.
Claude Francis Womack, 62, of Medford, died Tuesday (Nov. 8, 2005) at his residence. Arrangements: Memory Gardens Mortuary, Medford.

Harriett Blue
Harriett Blue, 85, of Medford, died Wednesday, November 9, 2005 at Rogue Valley Manor. Arrangements: Rogue Valley Funeral Alternatives.

Margaret Murphey
Margaret "Peggy" Josephine Murphey, 76, of La Pine (formerly of the Rogue Valley) died October 31, 2005. A private graveside service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 12. Arrangements: Baird Memorial Chapel, La Pine.

Matthew Gregg
Matthew Gregg, age 30, of Medford, died Sunday, November 6, 2005 in Sunny Valley. A graveside service will be held at Willamette National cemetery. Arrangements: Rogue Valley Funeral Alternatives.

Robert E. Frick
Robert Eugene Frick, 71, of Medford, died Tuesday, Nov. 8, 2005 at his residence. Arrangements: Memory Gardens Mortuary, Medford.

Claude F. Womack Jr.
The funeral service for Claude Francis Womack Jr. will be held Tuesday at 3 p.m. in the Memory Gardens Mortuary Chapel. Inurnment will be in the Eagle Point National cemetery. Visitation will be on Tuesday, from 1 to 3 p.m. at Memory Gardens.

Mr. Womack, 62. of Medford, died Tuesday, Nov. 8, 2005.

He was born on April 1, 1943 in Oregon City, OR. On Dec. 18, 1979 in Medford, he married Roxanne L. Nemec, who survives. They have lived in the Rogue Valley for the past 26 years, moving here from Lincoln City, OR.

Mr. Womack had been a chef at Cafe Dejeuner in Medford.

He enjoyed motorcycles, his grandson and was a big football fan. Mr. Womack served in the U.S. Navy during Vietnam.

Survivors in addition to his wife Roxanne, include: two daughters, Heather N. and Monique M. Womack, both Medford; a son, Kristen Womack of Georgia; a grandson, Derek K. Rogers; four brothers, Dave of Christmas Valley, OR; Larry of Portland; Jody of Idaho, and Rick; three sisters, Fran Elliott of Wisconsin, Marty Chandler of Salem, and Jane Womack of Remond.

Arrrangements: Memory Gardens Mortuary, Medford.

Elsie Marie Millington Brekke
Elsie passed away on Saturday, Oct. 22, 2005 at Hearthstone Skilled Nursing Facility in Medford. She was 88 years of age.

She was born on July 2, 1917. in Sac City, Iowa to William and Marie Millington. Elsie contracted polio at the age of 5 and was unable to walk or attend school until the age of 9. Due to Elsie's poor health her family moved from Iowa to a warmer climate in California. They settled in Huntington Park, CA in 1929 and in 1935 moved to Long Beach, CA. Elsie graduated from Jordan High School, Long Beach, CA in 1935.

During World War IL Elsie worked in the Personnel Office as an interviewer for the Douglas Aircraft Company in Long Beach. Elsie and Spencer resided in Big Bear, CA for a short period of time in the late 40's. In 1956, she became the Purchasing Supervisor at the University of California. Long Beach. They were also partners in the Brekke Brothers' Farm Corporation in Nielsville, Minnesota. In 1968 they built their home on Pioneer Rd. in Jackson County, OR and began a cattle raising venture in 1969.

Elsie was a volunteer for the American Red Cross in Medford, for 25 years.

She loved bowling, cooking, traveling, crossword puzzles, reading and visiting with family and friends.

Elsie is survived by her son, Ted Brekke and daughter-in-law, Gail Brekke of Phoenix, OR; granddaughter, Kristin Brekke of San Francisco, CA; brothers, William Millington of Long Beach, CA, and Richard Millington of Oroville, CA; as well as several nieces and nephews.She was preceded in death by her husband. Spencer Brekke. In lieu of flowers, a memorial contribution may be made to Asante Hospice, 2960 Doctors Park Dr., Medford. OR 97504.

A memorial service will be held for family and friends at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 15, 2005, at the Phoenix Presbyterian Church, 121 W. Second Street. Phoenix. Oregon. A private internment has been held at Memory Gardens Memorial Park, Medford.

Francis "Gene" Farthing
Francis "Gene" E. Farthing, 81, of Eugene(formerly of the Rogue Valley) died October 29, 2005. A private service has been held.

He was born on April 24, 1924 in Grants Pass, OR to Roy and Almonette (Adams) Farthing. On Dec. 19, 1942 he married his childhood sweetheart, Patsy Mae, who preceded him in death.

He received his Bachelors and Masters degrees in education from Southern Oregon College of Education, and his Doctorate from the University of Oregon in 1976.

Mr. Farthing served in the U.S. Army from 1942 to 1946.

He worked as a teacher, principal, administrator and retired in 1985 as a school Superintendent.

Mr. Farthing was a member of the Masons and the Southern Oregon Alumni Association.

He enjoyed his family, gardening, reading and birdwatching.

Survivors include two sons, Michael and Bruce both of Eugene; and four grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son, Timothy.

Arrangements: Rest-Haven Memorial Park and Funeral Home, Eugene.

James Marcus O'Quinn
Former Rogue Valley resident, James Marcus O'Quinn, age 84, died on August 6, 2005 while visiting his son in Midland, Texas. Cremation was held in Texas and a service of celebration with Military honors will be held at Fort Bliss National cemetery at a later date.

He was born Nov. 13, 1921 in Walters, Ok to Marcus Daniel and Melba (Montgomery) O'Quinn.

He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Iona O'Quinn of Klamath Falls; also his children Becky, Christy, Teri, Robin, James, Daniel, and Kathleen; 14 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; a brother Bentley; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Marcus Daniel and Melba (Montgomery) O'Quinn, a sister, Patricia O'Quinn, and a granddaughter, Lana Sweat.

Joan E. Haas
Joan E. Haas, age 69, of Loves Park, IL and formerly of Amboy, IL, died Wed. Nov. 9, 2009 at Barnes-Jewis Hospital in St. Louis, following a long struggle with an infected heart valve and complications.

She was born April 6, 1936 in New York, NY the daughter of Henry and Caroline (Manning) Gerdes. She had spent many years in Phoenix, AZ and Medford Oregon before returning to Illinois.

Joan was a retired commercial insurance broker who worked for several large insurance companies during her career. She was a member of the Catholic Church. She was an active volunteer with libraries, hospitals, Lions Clubs, CASA and other charitable organizations. She was an avid Cubs fan and reader.

Joan married Stephen Haas October of 1981. He preceded her in death March 9, 2002.

She was preceded in death by her parents. She is survived by one daughter, Cari (Doug) Wisely of Tucson, AZ; two grandchildren, Raymond and Elizabeth; brother, Henry (Cynthia) Gerdes of Amboy, IL; sisters, Carolyn Johns of Amboy, IL and Juanita (David) Foley of Cincinnati, OH; her fiance, Ronald Belcher of O'Fallon, IL; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held on Monday, Nov. 14 beginning with 10 a.m. prayer services at the Mihm Jones Funeral Home in Amboy, IL followed by a 10:30 a.m. Mass of Christian. Burial at St. Patrick Catholic Church Hall with the Rev. Aaron Brodeski pastor officiating. Burial will follow in Woodside cemetery in Lee Center, IL. Visitation will be on Sunday, Nov. 13 from 3 to 7 p.m. in the Mihm-Jones Funeral Home.

Memorial had been established to Pankhurst Memorial Library in Amboy. Condolences may be sent at www.thejonesfh.com.

John F. Zimmerlee Jr.
John Franklin Zimmerlee, Jr. was born on July 23, 1950 in Medford, Oregon to John and Edna Zimmerlee. He died November 10, 2005 on a hunting trip in northeastern Oregon.

John is survived by his wife Pat Harris-Zomerdyk-Zimmerlee; his three daughters, Tammy Hukill, Shelly Cowan of Klamath Falls and Janie Rives of White City; three grandsons, Zak and Brock Cowan and Chase Hukill.

Graveside services will be held on Tuesday, November 22, 2005 at 3 p.m. at Johnson cemetery in Shady Cove, Oregon.

John R. "Rod" Stevens
The memorial service for John Rodney "Rod" Stevens, 75, of Ashland, will be 11 a.m. Saturday, November 19, 2005 at the First Presbyterian Church, Ashland. Officiating will be Rev. Scott Delgarno. Mr. Stevens died November 2, 2005 in Coos Bay, Oregon.

Mr. Stevens was born December 18, 1929 in Charleston, South Carolina, the son of John and Azalea Stevens and was educated at the Citadel in Charleston, SC. On November 23, 1954 in Wiesbaden, Germany he married the former Ellen Taylor, who preceded him in death.

Rod was a civil engineer with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers for 20 years and after moving to Ashland in 1976 was the Director of the physical plant at Southern Oregon University.

He enjoyed flying, fishing, hunting, and genealogy. He was a member of the Citadel Alumni, Shakespeare Festival Board of Directors, the Ashland First Presbyterian Church, and The Friday Morning Board Meeting.

Surviving are two daughters, Laura Williamson of Lake Oswego, and Libby Hughes of North Bend; one son, John R. Stevens, Jr. of Portland; his mother, Azalea Stevens of Charleston, SC; and five grandchildren. In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his father John A. Stevens.

Memorial contributions may be made to Providence Hospice, 1660 E. McAndrews, Medford, OR 97504.

Luetta N. Straube
A memorial service is being held for Luetta N. Straube at 7 p.m., Thursday, November 17, at Hillcrest Memorial Park, 2201 N. Phoenix Rd., Medford.

She passed away on Wednesday, November 9, 2005, just one week after her son, Fred, and 10 days shy of her 69th wedding anniversary.

Luetta spent the majority of her years farming and working along with her husband and two sons in The Applegate Valley.

Surviving are her husband, Louis; her son, Bob; her daughter-in-law, Martha; two sisters; numerous nieces and nephews; six grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
