John "Jack" Cain
Oct. 9, 1915 - May 6, 2005
Jack Cain was a good man in every way. Born in 1915, he was orphaned five years later. His 80 year old grandmother took him to raise in Canada. When he was 12 years old, he returned to Chicago. He supported himself by rising at 4:15 a. m. to deliver papers. A ride in a car was a unique experience and when he graduated from High School, his sister taught him to drive. He remembered that gas was ten cents a gallon. His first car cost him $10 and he could lift it by hand to support it on an apple box while he changed a tire.
There was no one to encourage him to go on to college but he was determined to try. He chose Montana State and arrived the day the classes started. He had all of his worldly wealth in his pocket, which was $60. The President of the college trusted him for his tuition and helped him find an attic room to rent for $20 which included board and room and laundry for the month. Later he went to Kansas University but he volunteered for service in 1941. He was chosen for Officer's Candidate School and was made Chemical Warfare Officer. His service was terminated in mid I946 when he left with the rank of Captain. The Gl bill made it possible for him to go to Syracuse University in NY where he graduated and went on for his Master's Degree in Business. This is where he met his future wife, Eileen Baughman, and they were married
in I949 after they each received their Master's Degrees.
Jack went to work at North American Aviation in California and was eventually Supervisor of the Material Department. They had three sons, Mark, Ron and Gary and a daughter, Karen. He was totally devoted to his family.
He was active in Indian Guides, Boy Scouts, Little League., and other good causes to help people. After retirement he was active with the Methodist church in Chester, Calif, and the Almanor Peninsula.
Survivors include his wife of 55 years, Eileen; his children, Mark, Ron, Gary and Karen; and eight grandchildren.
A "Celebratiion of Life" will be held for Jack at the Ashland Methodist Church at 11 a.m. on May 21.
In lieu of flowers, any memorial could be sent to Ashland Hospice, 1970 Ashland St, Suite 1, Ashland, 97520
