Keldon Gaylord Adams
Keldon Gaylord Adams, "Kelly", 92, died March 28, 2005 in Medford, after a long bout with Alzheimer's.

Born in Hoquiam, Washington in 1912, he was the son and grandson of the town's bankers. He went to Oregon State University for two years studying aviation engineering. In 1932 he bought a broken-down boat and engine, rebuilt them both, and chugged up to Alaska to seek his fortune mining gold. He and friends built log cabins and lived in the wilderness of Southeastern Alaska prospecting for and mining gold throughout the Depression. Few people embraced the rugged adventures of the wilderness with so much optimism and courage as did Kelly.

During WWII, he served the country by working at Hanford, Washington, where the atomic bomb was being built in secrecy. After the war Kelly returned to Alaska and began using his aviation background. He became a licensed inspector for the F.A.A. with A&E; and A&P; ratings. He repaired, rebuilt, maintained, inspected and flew single and twin engine planes for the next 45 years, mostly in Ketchikan, Alaska and Medford, Oregon. Scattered throughout his aviation career were breaks for more mining and prospecting forays.

Kelly and a partner discovered uranium at Bokan Mountain on Prince of Wales Island, Alaska in 1955. One of the richest uranium deposits in the world, it was a highly successful mine in its category. He mined iron, recovered mercury from old mines, and placer mined for nuggets in the Klondike for about 10 years. He loved to prospect and travelled throughout the U.S., Canada, Latin America and New Zealand to carry out his passion, almost always with his family in tow. He found, among other things, amethysts, garnets, copper, silver, platinum, and gallium, but mostly gold. Kelly never visited any spot in the world without picking up a rock and examining it. Prospecting was in his blood.

He was accompanied throughout his adventures by his loving wife of 54 years, Judith Chilton Adams. Kelly was the father of four daughters: Sandra, Judi, Martha (Tate), and Grace; plus seven granddaughters and three grandsons, all of whom survive him.

Gregarious and generous, Kelly enjoyed people, and had many friends. He was president of the Alaska Miners Association for a number of years, was a member of the Yukon Order of Pioneers and belonged to the Elks Club.

He was a bush pilot and an inventor who greatly improved the safety of seaplanes in Southeastern Alaska. He had a wonderful sense of humor and always lived life with optimism. Those who knew him will miss the smile on his face, and the twinkle in his eye, and the many stories of his adventures, retold in picturesque detail, he so loved to share with friends and family.

Kelly's memorial service will be held the Lake Creek Community Center in Lake Creek, Oregon, Sunday, May 15, at 10 a.m.

DeLaire "Andy" Andersen
DeLaire "Andy" Andersen died April 5, 2005, at Providence Hospital after a long illness.

He was born on Oct. 11, 1928 in South Bend, Indiana, to Anker and Vesta Andersen. Vesta died when Andy was 5 and he was taken care of by his maternal grandmother until he was 11. Andy had one brother Jay Burdette, who preceded him in death by a number of years.

Andy married Doris Johnston in Chicago, IL. On July 6, 1946 they eloped. They had six children; three while still living in Indiana and three more after their move to Portland, Oregon in 1955.

Andy heeded the "go west, young man, go west" and they drove across country to seek their future in Oregon. During the first years of their marriage Andy often held two jobs while he pursued his education. They bought a large home where they raised their family and many extended family members. They lived in that house for 20 years where the children all had roots.

Andy became interested in franchising and after working for ServiceMaster for several years he purchased a Master Franchise and Distributorship for ServiceMaster that took him to Southern Oregon, Northern California and Tahoe and Reno in Nevada. At that point he and Doris moved to Southern Oregon and lived in Ashland for two years until they found a house to buy in Shady Cove. After several years of commuting to Ashland (for Doris' work) they sold that home and bought one on Pioneer Road in Medford and they were still living there when he died.

When he sold the Distributorship in 1990 he and Doris decided to stay in the Medford area. But he wasn't ready to retire. At the advice of a professor friend he volunteered as an SBDC Counselor for Southern Oregon University's Small Business Development Center. Shortly, he became a part time employee and there he stayed for 12 plus years until he became ill.

During his years in Jackson County he was always busy with community affairs and projects. He served on many committees and boards; he really cared about the growth of the area he had grown to love. He served on the Board of the Heart of Medford Association, on the Bear Creek Masterplan Advisory Committee and a number of others.

He was a member of the Rogue Valley Professional Association for a number of years, served as President, and when he became too ill to attend they voted to make him a Member Emeritus which made him very proud. He loved the friends he made in the group and he believed strongly in their purpose, that of helping each other in business.

Andy had many friends and business associates, some of whom he assisted in starting businesses during his years with the SBDC. Antique car enthusiasts will remember his red International pickup truck that his children refurbished during a six month period and surprised him with it at his 70th birthday party. He entered it in the Medford Cruise and won a plaque each year. He was so proud of the truck and the love his children had shown with their efforts. It was his pride and joy.

At one point he served on the Mediation Board as a Dispute Resolution Mediator. He served as Treasurer for the Winema Council of Girl Scouts; his interest in youth activities was a carry-over from his and Doris' large family home in Portland which provided a haven for teenagers who needed the security of a family during their difficult years. Andy would say "some men's wives bring home stray dogs and cats; my wife brings home teenagers". But the family was blessed with the experiences.

Even more important to him than all his other involvements was his family. He was a beloved father to his six children: Vicki Sanderson, Chris Andersen and Mardi Elslip in Seattle; Craig Andersen and Karen Andersen in Portland and Kent Andersen in Austin, Texas; and grandfather and great-grandfather to a total of 25.

In July of this year he and Doris would have celebrated their 59th wedding anniversary.

He was a member of the Westminster Presbyterian Church and his wish to have his ashes on the Church grounds is being fulfilled on Friday, May 6, when a Memorial Service will be held at the church (on the comer of Groveland and E. Oakwood) at 4 p.m. and an Inurnment immediately after in their Memorial Garden.

Please join his family and friends for the service. He was a wonderful husband, father and friend.

Andy was an outstanding human being and he will be missed.

May he rest in peace.
