Edward Andrew Holtgrave

Edward Andrew Holtgrave, 81, of Talent, died Sunday, March 30, 2003 at Medford Rehab. Private services to be held.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Children's Advocacy Center, 816 W. 10th St. Medford, Ore. 97501.

Edward was born May 1, 1921 in Kansas City Mo., son of Edward Andrew and Emily (Miller) Holtgrave Sr.

He moved to the Rogue Valley from Whittier, Calif. in 1951. On Jan. 20, 1996 in Talent, he married Marilyn Wilson, who survives.

Edward was a civil engineer at Southern Oregon University for 16 years. His hobbies included fishing and camping. He served as an airman in World War II.

Survivors include his wife, Marilyn Holtgrave of Talent; son, William Holtgrave of Medford; daughter, Cindy Niedermeyer of Central Point; four step-children, Beth Williams of Huntington Beach, Calif., Melissa Van Ert of Brea, Calif., Sara Williams of Portland and David Williams of Portland; seven grandchildren; and eight great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one brother, Alan.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Central Point Chapel, 800 S. Front St. Central Point, Ore. 97502.

Virginia L. James

The memorial service for Virginia L. James will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Glenwood Park in Ashland.

Mrs. James, 71, of Ashland, died Monday (March 31, 2003) at her home.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, 31 W. Sixth St., Medford, OR 97501.

She was born Aug. 3, 1931, in Long Branch, N.J., to Glenn H. Sr. and Elizabeth G. Palmer. She earned a bachelor's degree in nursing in Chicago.

Mrs. James was an occupational health nurse in Los Angeles, retiring in 1996.

She moved to Ashland in 1996.

She was past president of the Oak Knoll Women's Golf Association.

Survivors include three daughters, Shannon Deckwar, Ashland, Dawn McKensie, Spring, Texas, and Erin Broersma, Los Alamitos, Calif.; a brother, Glenn H. Palmer Jr.; and eight grandchildren.

Arrangements: Litwiller-Simonsen Funeral Home and Crematory, Ashland.

Elizabeth "Liz" Collins Canape

Elizabeth "Liz" Collins Canape, 79, formally of Medford, died March 28, 2003 at her home in Brookings of cancer.

She was born March 24, 1924 in Rome, N.Y., to Lawrence Collins and Florence (Young) Collins. After graduation from high school, she attended the nursing program at Johns Hopkins University Hospital.

She married Frank Anthony Canape in April of 1944, while he was an active duty marine. He was fighting in Iwo Jima when their first son, Ken was born. She became used to military separation and sacrifice. Ken was a Green Beret in Vietnam, son Robert was an Army Green Beret in Vietnam, son Marc was in the Army, son Paul had a career in the Air Force, where he served in Bosnia and Afghanistan, and upon retirement came to be by his mother's side during her final illness. A grandson, James, served in the Army in the Gulf War and Kosovo, and is currently in the Navy serving in Operation Iraqi Freedom.

Liz and Frank Canape moved from New Jersey to Medford in the fall of 1978 where she was active in the Lady of the Mountain Catholic Church.

She was her family's matriarch, and was content in her role of a supporting wife and loving mother. In later years, her home remained the focal point of the family, inviting return to all.

After moving to Brookings in 1991, she was a very active member of the Star of the Sea Catholic Church. She was a member of the Altar Society participating in the Mass by reading passages of the Bible to the assembly, as well as performing the sacrament of communion for homebound parishioners.

She donated time and money to numerous church activities; notably in recent months, she had been involved in a military relative recognition program. She enjoyed the coast, ocean, walking and viewing the shore. She had a dry wit, and enjoyed watching BBC comedies on television.

Survivors include her children, Kenneth Canape of Billings, Mont., Jean Canape of Ashland, Robert Canape of Ashland, Gary Canape of Medford, Frank Canape of Salem Paul Canape of Tucson, Ariz., and Marc Canape of Medford; 12 grandchildren; and six great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 48 years.

Friends are invited to call from noon until 5 p.m. Friday, April 4, 2003, at Redwood Memorial Chapel, 1020 Fifield St. Brookings. The Rosary will follow at the chapel at 7 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 5, 2003, at the Star of the Sea Catholic Church, with committal at Ward's Memorial Cemetery.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Redwood Memorial Chapel.

Lisa Marie Laursen Thirkill

Lisa Marie Laursen Thirkill, 43, of Talent, died Sunday, March 30, 2003, at her home. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m., Saturday, April 5, 2003, at Perl Funeral Home at Siskiyou Memorial Park.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Lisa's name can be made to the National Brain Tumor Foundation, 414 Thirteenth St. Suite #700, Oakland, Calif. 94612-2603 or Musella Foundation, 110 Peninsula Blvd., Hewlette, N.Y. 11557.

She was born April 25, 1959 in Albuquerque, N.M., daughter to Helge and Margaret (Petersen) Laursen. On June 6, 1982 in Logan, Utah, she married Michael E. Thirkill. She moved to the Rogue Valley from New Mexico and resided here for 15 years.

Her primary education was from 1963 to 1971 in Namibia, Africa. She graduated from Utah State University with a bachelor's degree in anthropology.

She later graduated from the University of New Mexico with a master's in anthropology.

She was a child advocate, a political lobbyist, homemaker and helped organize Oregon's "Million Mom March" in May of 2000.

She was an artist of diverse materials (stone, paints, textiles, etc.). She loved to travel, garden and write.

She is survived by her spouse, Michael Thirkill; mother, Margaret Laursen of Talent; sons, Graham Laursen Thirkill and Logan Peterson Thirkill; sisters, Linda Laursen-Bahr of Roseburg and Ingrid Laursen of Ashland; brothers, Larry Laursen of Namibia, Africa and Eric Laursen of Ashland. She was preceded in death by her father, Helge Laursen in 1996.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Perl Funeral Home.
