Helen M. Johnson
A memorial service for Helen Maude Johnson will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 25, 2004 at the First Presbyterian Church, Ashland. Mrs. Johnson, 87, of Ashland, died Saturday, Aug. 7, 2004 at home.
She was born in Grey Township, Huron County, Ontario Canada. She was the daughter of the late David H. Campbell and the former Maude Coughlin. She was a Registered Nurse and served in the Royal Canadian Army Medical Corp from 1944- 1946.
After World War II she moved to the United States and married
her late husband Arthur Best Johnson, March 2, 1957.
They were active members of the First Presbyterian Church and enjoyed traveling, skiing, and bridge club until Art's death in 1993. Helen continued serving the community through her work with the Tudor Guild and Meals on Wheels.
She is survived by her brother, Donald Campbell of Kelowna, BC.
She will be greatly missed for her gentleness, quick wit, and compassion.

John Edward Homer
John Edward Homer, the only son of Gene and Shirley Homer, passed away Saturday, September 18, 2004.
He left behind his beautiful wife Melinda Susan; his sisters Pamela Oseles-Mast, Jeanne Homer, and Sandy Homer; his niece Jessica Oseles; as well as his beloved dog Cori.
John was brought into this world on June 7, 1981, and he brought with him the gift of unconditional love and set an example to us all of what it is to have real courage. John's passion in life was motorcycles and almost anything he could go fast on. He had plans of attending the Motorcycle Mechanics Institute in Phoenix, AZ beginning in January to pursue a career where he could live his passion.
His smile is forever embedded in the hearts of all his family and friends, and his love and spirit will be carried on through us all.
Thanks you for being such a beautiful part of our lives John, we miss you more than anything.
John M. Sharp
A graveside service for John M. Sharp will be at 10 a.m. Friday, Sept. 24, 2004 at the Eagle Point National cemetery.
Mr. Sharp, 82, of Medford, died Sunday (Sept. 19, 2004) at Rogue Valley Medical Center.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Red Cross in the form of a blood donation.
He was born on Dec. 20, 1921 in Vale, OR a son of Pete and Bertha Sharp. He attended schools in Grants Pass, and in 1950 he moved to the Rogue Valley.
He served in the U.S. Army during WW II, in North Africa and Sicily as a combat engineer.
Mr. Sharp was a house painter, and he worked in various mills in the area.
He enjoyed traveling, especially trips to Reno, Nevada, and spending time with his family and many friends.
Survivors include his daughters, Christina Miller, Rebecca Sharp, Valerie Cooke; a brother, Harold Sharp; sisters, Deloris Shehorn, Gloria Hannaford; eight grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by two brothers, three sisters, and a daughter, Denise.
All who knew him and loved him will miss him greatly.
Dorothy Jane Galante
A memorial sevice for Dorothy Jane Galante will be at 12:30 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 19, 2004, at the Eagle Point Assembly of God Church. Private inurnment will be Eagle Point National cemetery.
Mrs. Galante, 85, of Medford (formerly of Ashland) died Sept. 4, 2004 at her home.

She was born on Oct. 4, 1918 in Morehouse, MO to Edward and Ella (Harp) Mocabee. She moved to the Rogue Valley 25 years ago from Tigard, OR.
Mrs. Galante was a homemaker.
She enjoyed oil painting, cooking bowling, and watching the San Francisco 49'era and the Portland Trail Blazers.
Survivors include her dauaghter, Kate Galante of Costa Rica; her son, Wayne Galante of Hawaii; her brother and sister-in-law Daniel and Goldie Mocabee of North Bend, OR; and her brother, Robert Mocabee of Sparks, NV.

Margaret Fuchik
Margaret Agnes Fuchik, 94, of Medford passed away on Saturday, September 11, 2004. A memorial service will be held on Friday, September 24 at 1 p.m. at Medford First Christian Church, with Pastor Alicia Speidel officiating.
Mrs. Fuchik was born on March 20, 1910 in Cleveland, Ohio to Charles and Agnes (Lancefield) Sykora. She attended Andrews School for Girls in Willoughby, Ohio, where she received her diploma in 1928. In 1933, in Cleveland, she married
James Fuchik, and in 1934, they moved to California, a trip that was to take the better part of a year. Along the way they lived in their homemade tent trailer and made signs for businesses in order to earn money to buy food and gasoline. In southern California, she worked as a maid and cook in various wealthy households. Eventually she was employed by film star Fay Bainter as the celebrity's personal secretary. When the war started, she and Jim moved to Santa Monica. Later they lived in Westchester and Torrance. She moved to Medford in 1998.
Beginning with that first road trip during the Depression, Margaret always loved to travel. When her children were still at home, they traveled by trailer all across the U.S. and to Alaska. Later, she and Jim visited close to 100 foreign countries. Her favorite was Australia. Along with traveling, Margaret liked to correspond with people she had met. She also loved to cook, especially to bake, and she always had homemade cookies on hand.
Margaret is survived by her daughter, Sharon Fox and her husband George of Medford; daughter-in-law, Linda Fuchik, of Huntington Beach, CA; granddaughters Kimberly Fox-Kristensen and her husband Allan of Clovis, CA, and Adrienne Hillman and her husband Andrew of Medford; step-granddaughter Donya Bommer and her husband Scott of New York; and two great-granddaughters, Ryann Kristensen and Sydney Hillman. She was preceded in death by her husband, James, in 1986, and by her son, Donald, on Aug. 29.
Julia Beam

William Reid

Donald Irwin Hammer
After a valiant fight with cancer, Donald Irwin Hammer died on September 8, 2004.
Survivors include Marion Bowers Hammer, his wife of 57 years; his son Scott Kennedy Hammer and wife, Janet of Richmond, Virginia; and his daughter, Jennifer Carroll Hammer of El Cerrito, California. He also leaves a sister, Margie Thoney, several nieces, nephews and great nieces and great nephews, all of California.
Dr. Hammer was born on April 22, 1926 in Cawker City, Kansas. He served in the Air Corps during World War II, training as a tail gunner. His undergraduate work was done at the Western Washington College in Bellingham Washington. He married
Frances Marion Bowers in Troy, Alabama in 1947.
Dr Hammer received his Doctorate degree in Mathematics at Columbia University, New York. He was a professor of mathematics at Adelphi University, Garden City, New York. He was an Elder in the Northport Presbyterian Church.
After living on Long Island for many years, the Hammers retired to the Eastern Shore of Virginia. In 2001 they moved to the Rouge Valley Manor, in Medford, Oregon.
He became a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Medford.
He was a watercolorist, a gardener, and a singer, being a member of the Barbershop and Siskiyou Singers. He loved hiking and camping with his family in the United States, Europe and Africa. He was truly a renaissance man.
A memorial service will be at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 17, at the First Presbyterian, Medford.
Memorials may be made to the Rogue Valley Manor Foundation or to the First Presbyterian Church of Medford.

Shirley L. Delaney
The memorial service for Shirley L. Delaney will be held at noon Saturday, at Memory Gardens Mortuary, Medford.
Mrs. Delaney, 73, passed away on Sept. 10, 2004 after a long valiant fight with cancer.
She is survived by her five children; 13 grandchildren; and 11 great grandchildren.
She will be held in our hearts forever.
Charlene M. Cummings

Stanford M. Wertz
Stanford (Stan) M. Wertz died on November 17, 2004 in Fall River Mills, CA after a long illness. He was born June 24, 1931 in Redding, CA to Ben and Ada (Dunlap) Wertz. Stan married
Carol E. Wertz on August 8, 1954. They had just recently celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary.
A Memorial Service will at 2 p.m. today, Nov. 20, at Fall River Mills Community United Methodist Church, in Fall River Mills, CA.
In 1935 Stan moved with his family to the Applegate Valley. Stan's great-grand parents traveled from Bedford County Pennsylvania and were homesteaders on land adjacent to what is now Cantrall Buckley Park.
Stan was a heavy equipment owner/operator most of his life. He built many of the logging roads in the area. He was involved in the construction of I-5 Siskiyou Summit Pass. He traveled to Washington State after Mt. St. Helens to clear the rivers and rebuild the roads.
Stan was a member of the Masonic Lodge and IOOF Lodge of Jacksonville, OR. He was a graduate of Jacksonville High School with a letter in baseball.
He enjoyed hunting, fishing and telling a good story.
Survivors include Carol Wertz, his wife of 50 years; his son, Mike Wertz; and his two grand-daughters, Kristen and Kari.

Gary Moyer Gray
Gary Moyer Gray, age 60, died Thursday, November 11, 2004 at his home in Eagle Point.
He was born on April 15, 1944 in Washington DC, to Richard L. and Florence M. (Pratt) Gray. He married
Paula A. Buchanan in Bellflower, California on January 27, 1981. He moved to the Rogue Valley in 1982. He served in the United States Air Force, where he earned the Red Cross Life Saving Award Medal. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, traveling and camping. He won a bronze Medal in the Police Olympics. He was a life long member of N.R.A. Most of all he loved his family.
He is survived by his wife Paula A. Gray of Eagle Point, OR; sons Chad Gray of Medford, OR, Shawn (Alisha) Gray of Savannah, Georgia; daughter Christie Madrid (Joel) of Crockett, CA; grandchildren Zachary, Jacob, Shelby Essex; and many special friends and special people. He was preceded in death by his parents.
Funeral Services will be held on Wednesday, November 17, 2004 at 11:00 a.m. at the Perl Funeral Home. Interment will be in the Eagle Point National Cemetary. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Rogue Valley Medical Center Hospice.

Gary B. Cain
Gary B. Cain, 72, of Phoenix, died Friday (Nov. 12, 2004) at a foster care home. No services are planned.
He was born on Oct. 30, 1932 in Modesto, CA to Bryan and Hazel (Keith) Cain.
Mr. Cain was a graduate of Eagle Point High School and Butte College in Oroville, CA.
He served in the U.S. Army. He was a licensed commercial pilot and a retired teamster.
He is survived by a brother, Dean R. Cain of Riverbank, CA.

Joseph E. Spayde
Feb. 16, 1920 - Nov. 3, 2004
After long illness from cancer, Joseph Spayde passed away Wednesday, November 3, 2004 at his home in Jacksonville.
He was born February 16, 1920 in Nez Perce, Idaho, the fifth child of William Lafayette and Mary Adah (Smith) Spayde. In 1927 his family moved to Ashland, OR where he went to the public schools and OSU, where he played varsity basketball. In February 1942, he was drafted into the U.S. Army and transferred to pilot training with the Army Air Force, receiving his commission and pilots wings in February 1943 at Marfa, Texas. During World War II, he was an instructor pilot, teaching new cadets. He was discharged from the military at the end of the World War II and went into business in Seattle and Portland.
In April 1951 he was recalled to active duty and sent to Korea as a transport aircraft pilot with the Military Airlift Command. He remained in the Air Force, became a command pilot with over 10, 000 flying hours, trained and became a flying, ground and nuclear safety officer and, as such, served a tour of duty in Bermuda. After three years, he returned to Travis AFB in California, serving as a flying safety officer until he was assigned to Cam Rhan Bay, Vietnam as a flying safety officer for a year.. He retired from the Air Force April 1, 1970.
After retirement, he and his wife, the former Ellajo Watson of Ashland, traveled the west coast of British Columbia, Washington, Oregon and Mexico for a year and returned to the Rogue Valley and bought a home in Jacksonville. He found joy in growing fruits and vegetables and sharing with his neighbors, friends and family. He also enjoyed fishing and wintering in Mexico and salmon fishing on the Kenai River of Canada.
He is survived by his wife, Ellajo of Jacksonville; his son, Terry of Jacksonville; a daughter, Linda; one granddaughter and great grandson of Portland, and a sister, Esther Gates of Rainier; and many nieces and nephews.
Joseph enjoyed many people and is remembered by them for his great sense of humor.
No service is planned. A family celebration of his life will be next summer.
Junious B. 'J.B.' Lemonds
Junious Burdett, 90, (Nov. 20, 1913) of Medford, died Sunday, (Nov. 14, 2004) at Medford Rehabilitation & Healthcare Center. Arrangements; Conger-Morris Funeral Directors, Medford.
Peter David Farber
Peter David Farber, age 60, departed this earth peacefully at his home in Ashland, on Sunday, Nov. 7, 2004. He had been ill during late 2003 and 2004, and his family wishes to express deep appreciation to Providence Medical Center, the Rogue Valley Dialysis Center, and the many health care providers who cared for Pete during his illness.
Pete was born in Brooklyn, New York, attended Bronx High School of Science, and graduated from the State University of New York in Stony Brook. His career as an Information Technology Executive included positions in Seattle, San Francisco, and New York City, prior to his retirement a few years ago.
He is survived by his loving wife and partner of 35 years, Margie, his sister Phyllis Wik, and his father, Phil Farber. Additionally Pete's in-laws, cousins, Aunt Helen and numerous friends loved him and will remember him forever.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Peter David Farber Memorial Scholarship for Women's Studies, which has been established at Southern Oregon University in Ashland, in memory of Pete.
