James A. Linkogle
James A. Linkogle of Ashland, Oregon died Saturday, October 23, 2004, at the age of 71. Jim died of liver failure and was lovingly nursed through his illness by his wife Joan and in the final stages by his son Paul.

Although a native Californian, he lived in Ashland for over fifteen years. His move to Oregon with wife Joan and younger son James was planned and eagerly anticipated for many years.

Jim was born in Bell, California in 1933, one of six siblings. He lived in the Eagle Rock section of Los Angeles during most of his childhood and returned there as an adult to raise his family. His widowed mother Dorothy worked tirelessly to support her family during the depression. His early experiences of poverty gave him a sense of understanding and compassion for others. Jim received a BA in history from Loyal Marymount University. In addition, he was awarded a Bachelors of Philosophy from Saint Albert's (Berkeley).

He had a varied work history. Jim was a staff sergeant in the Air Force during the Korean War. He was a weather balloon operator, working all over the United States including the Nevada test site. He entered the Dominican seminary in 1959 to train for the priesthood. Realizing that this was not the life for him he left and eventually met and married Joan. He worked for the Los Angeles County Assessor's Office for over 20 years before retiring to Ashland.

Jim was an active parishioner of our Lady of the Mountain Church. He was also involved in the local chapters of the Labor Party and the Alliance for Democracy. He participated in the Seattle World Trade Organization protests in 1999. A multi-faceted person, Jim was as comfortable working outdoors as he was with intellectual pursuits. He undertook many ambitious home improvement projects, including single-handedly replacing a large swimming pool with a lush garden.

He is survived by his wife, Joan, of forty years; and his children Stephanie, Paul, Maria and James; two granddaughters; and two grandsons; and siblings, Mary, Catherine and Joe.

There will be a rosary at Litwiller-Simonsen Funeral Home on Wednesday, October 27, at 8 p.m. The funeral will be at Our Lady of the Mountain Catholic Church, Ashland, on Thursday, at 12:30 p.m., followed by a reception. Graveside service will be at Eagle Point National cemetery at 3 p.m.
