RICHARD SYLVEN TURNER
HANNA, Okla. - Richard Sylven Turner, 72-year old Hanna resident, passed away Sunday, March 23, 2003, at St. Francis Hospital in Tulsa, Okla., following an extended illness.
Richard was born October 5, 1930 in Hall County, Texas to Sylven B. Turner and Orena (Montgomery) Turner. He was a Refrigeration and Air Conditioner Technician. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean conflict.
Richard was united in marriage to Luisa Ballesteros on September 15, 1959 at Navajo Sonora, Mexico.
Surviving family members include his wife, Luisa of Tucson, Ariz.; one daughter, Susana Maria Morales of Tucson; three sisters, Argie L. Thomas and husband, Art of Vinita, Okla., Kathleen A. Suarez and husband, Elliott of Lakewood, Colo., Sheryl D. Carrier and husband, Jerry of Claremore, Okla.; and one brother, Frank S. Turner and wife, Carol of Shawnee, Okla.; a host of nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, one son Ricardo Turner, and one sister Jemmella A. Stites.
Private family services will be scheduled at a later date.
Arrangements are under the direction of Burckhalter Funeral Home.
CURLEY TURTLE
TWIN OAKS, Okla. - Curley Turtle was called home by his savior on Thursday, March 27, 2003. He was born on May 24, 1923 to Charley Turtle and Linnie Vann in Kansas, Okla. He grew up in Delaware County and lived there most of his life, attending school in Oaks Mission. Curley served two tours in the Korean war with the U.S. Army and was the recipient of two Bronze Stars, United Nations Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal and Occupation of Japan Medal and Korean Service Medal. After he was discharged, he met and married Susie Turtle and they began their family.
He worked as a miner in Colorado in the 1950s before moving his family back to Oklahoma, where he worked in construction.
A charter member of the Twin Oaks Baptist Church, he served as a deacon until his health did not allow. He was a very strong-willed man with a profound love of the Lord and he was very deep in his faith. Although we will miss him, he is joining his wife, his parents, a son, three brothers, and a sister; they are all surely rejoicing in heaven.
Survivors include four sons, Charlie Turtle of Oaks, David Turtle of Oaks, Tommy Turtle and wife, Georgia of Kansas, Okla. and Ron Turtle of Tulsa, Okla.; two daughters, Lena Rogers and husband, Don of Kansas and Ronda May and husband, Bob of Plattsburg, Kan.; a sister, Lou Gagigan of Sunnyvale, Calif.; three granddaughters, Brandi Turtle, Karla Welch and Chaney Turtle; four grandsons, Taylor Armbrister, Kaden Rogers and Tamara Gilmore; and a host of other family and friends.
The funeral was held at 2 p.m., Monday, March 31 in the Twin Oaks Baptist Church. Interment
was in Blackfox Cemetery. Services were under the direction of the Worley-Luginbuel Funeral Home, Jay, Okla.
LAURA TYLER
Laura Tyler, age 58, Grove, Okla., passed away Sunday, November 30, 2003, at her home, following a long illness.
Mrs. Tyler was born on September 27, 1945, Bronx, NY. Laura was a Psychotherapist and worked at the Willow Crest Hospital in Miami, Okla. for the past 10 years. She was a member of the Church of Christ in Grove and she was avid in knitting, quilting, and crocheting. Laura served as an interpreter on mission trips for five years in South America.
She married Ray Tyler on November 26, 1976 in Anaheim, Calif. He survives.
Additional survivors are her sons, Brad and his wife Janice Tyler of Guam, James Tyler and his fiancee Jennifer Dobbins of Tulsa, Okla. She is survived also by her daughter Malita and her husband Richard Sawyers of Bella Vista, Ark. Other survivors are her four grandchildren, Felicia and Chasity Sawyers and Seany and Alexis Tyler, and her mother Antonia O'Neil of Los Angeles, Calif.
Funeral services
will be 10:00 a.m. Friday at the Church of Christ, Grove, Okla. Doug Rainbolt, Minister, will officiate. The family will receive friends from 9 a.m. until service time.
Arrangements are under the direction of the Mason- Woodard Mortuary, Joplin, Mo.
MEDA M. UNDERWOOD
JAY, Okla. - Meda M. Underwood, 93-year-old long time Jay resident, passed away Friday, December 26, 2003, at her home following an extended illness.
She was preceded in death by husband Albert Lee (Babe) Underwood; mother Nancy Foreman and Father W.A. Ford; sisters Nelva Moore, Willia Dean Ford (Billie); brothers Marvin Ford and Oliver Ford; son Joe Underwood; and daughter Ronelda Cook.
She is survived by son George Underwood; nieces Shirley Morgan, Treva Shields, Verline Stephens and Mickey Martin.
Meda was born on a farm in Maysville, Ark. She was the only high school student at Jay. Then she went to Southwest City, Mo. for two years and was a member of the first graduation class from Jay. She was salutatorian from her class. She lived and worked in Jay all of her life as a city, county employee, owned a clothing store and then switched to a craft store. She had her own clothing store and then a craft store for over 35 years. She attended Brush Creek Baptist Church.
Funeral services
were held at 10 a.m. on Monday, December 29, at the Brush Creek Baptist Church. Rev. Richard Pickup officiated. Interment
was in Duffield Cemetery.
Serving as pallbearers were nephews Phil Morgan and Bob Stephens, grandsons Frankie Cook and Kim Cook, friend Charles Colston and great-nephew Harland Coble.
Services were entrusted to Turner Funeral Chapel of Jay.
SUZETTTE ANN VANATTA
MIAMI, Okla. - Suzette Ann Vanatta, 25, of rural Miami died Thursday, February 2, 2003 at Baptist Regional Health Center after a short illness.
Mrs. Vanatta was born February 17, 1977 in New Orleans, La., she has lived here since January 2001, moving from Garryville, La. She was of the Catholic faith.
Mrs. Vanatta married David Vanatta, Jr. On March 26, 1999 in Norco, La.
She is survived by her husband David Vanatta, Jr., of the home; one son Michael Paul Vanatta, of the home; mother and step-father, Deanna and Darren Caillout of Garryville; grandmothers, Lois Caillout of Garryville, and Isabella Bivona of Norco; one brother Darren Caillout, Jr., of Garryville; and one sister Lacy Caillout, of Garryville.
Mrs. Vanatta was preceded in death by a daughter Morgan Renee, in May of 2002.
Graveside services
were held at 2 p.m. Monday, February 10, in the Greenlawn Cemetery., Melorose, Kan. Rev. Robert Taylor officiated.
Arrangements were under the direction of the Guilford-Thomas Funeral Home, Miami.
GOLDBOURNE SAM (G.S.) VANHOOSE
FAIRLAND, Okla. - Goldbourne Sam (G.S.) Vanhoose, a lifetime Fairland resident, died at Integris Grove General Hospital, Saturday, April 12, 2003, after a brief illness. He was 75. He was born at Dodge, Okla., on April 13, 1927, to Sam and Gracie Barnes Vanhoose. He graduated from Fairland High School and attended NEO for two years. He married Ethyl (Kitty) King on February 25, 1950. He was a terminal manager for Roadway Express, retiring in 1988. He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Fairland and a former member of the Lions Club in Miami.
Mr. Vanhoose was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, and a sister, Norma Jean Jackson. He is survived by three sons, Sam Vanhoose of Miami, Larry Vanhoose and wife Lisa of Fairland and Jim Vanhoose of Kansas; three daughters, Carol Dowell of Fairland, Nancy Pannell and husband Chuck of Fairland and Margie Ingram and husband Dan, of Miami; 19 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. A graveside service will be conducted at Fields Cemetery, south of the Dodge Baptist Church by Adcock Funeral Home of Fairland at 2 p.m., Wednesday, April 16, with Rev. Andy Krebs officiating.
Serving as pallbearers will be Jason Vanhoose, Kevin McNeely, Charles Evans, Brandon Roach, Curtis Pannell and Adam Ingram. A visitation will be from 7 - 8 p.m., Tuesday evening, at the funeral home. Arrangements provided by Adcock Funeral Home of Fairland.
MAGGIE MAE VANOVER
VINITA, Okla. - Maggie Mae Vanover, 86-year-old lifetime resident, passed away Tuesday, April 8, 2003, at Craig General Hospital in Vinita.
Maggie was born November 9, 1916 at Big Cabin, Okla. to Benjamin Franklin Epperson and Dora Mae (Horn) Epperson. She was a homemaker.
Maggie was united in marriage to Elmer Louis Vanover on May 7, 1949. He preceded her in death on September 8, 1990.
Surviving family members include two daughters, Marcia Merritt and husband, Gib of Salina, Okla. and Wanda Haskins and husband, M.V. "Jiggs" of Tulsa, Okla.; one son, Tim Vanover and wife, Brenda of Waukomis, Okla.; six grandsons, Rick Haskins, Randy Haskins, Tyler Vanover, Taylor Vanover, Brandon Merritt and Heath Merritt; and five great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, two sisters, Louisa Trickey and Ruth Washburn, two brothers, Raymond and Robert Epperson.
Funeral services
will be held at 10:30 a.m., Friday, April 11, 2003, in the sanctuary of the Trinity Baptist Church. Rev. Will Busch and Rev. Bobby Belew will officiate. Interment
will be in Fairview Cemetery.
Serving as pallbearers will be grandsons and honorary pallbearers will be Garry Steinhoff, Leon McMullin and Rick Walker.
Services are under the direction of Burckhalter Funeral Home.
STELLA SUE HERREL WALL
MIAMI, Okla. - Stella Sue Herrel Wall, 78, of Miami, died Tuesday, January 28, at the Miami Nursing Center after an illness. Mrs. Wall was born February 22, 1924 in the Bernice area of Delaware County, Okla. to Armstead A. (AA) and Effie Parish. She has lived in the Miami area most of her life.
Mrs. Wall was a homemaker and a member of the Hudson Creek Baptist Church.
She is survived by: a son, Max Herrel, Sr. of Miami; three grandchildren, Max Herrel, Jr. of Miami, Kandi Smith of Seneca, Mo., and Bobby Herrel of Edmond, Okla.; seven great grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren also survive.
Funeral services
will be held at 2 p.m., Friday, January 31, in the Guilford -Thomas Funeral Home Chapel in Miami. Burial will be held in the G.A.R. Cemetery, Miami, under the direction of the Guilford-Thomas Funeral Home, Miami.
Pallbearers will be Max Herrel Jr., Tracy Smith, Darren Blevins, Douglas Blevins, Jerry Mills, and Cleo Mills.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Thursday evening at the Guilford-Thomas Funeral Home in Miami.
LEROY A. "FLUFFY" WALLACE
LeRoy A. "Fluffy" Wallace, 79, of Grove died Wednesday, June 18, 2003 at his home. He was born Feb. 3, 1924 in Columbus, Kan. to William Wallace and Iva Mae Carter Wallace. He graduated from the Columbus High School with the class of 1942. He was a veteran of WWII serving in the US Navy from Dee. of 1942 until Jan. of 1946. He married Mary Lou Wells on March 30, 1946 in Columbus. She survives of the home. He attended Central Electronics College in Kansas City, Mo. and worked as an electronics engineer for 40 years. LeRoy was a member of the American Legion Keith Reeves Post #3 of Columbus.
Survivors are one son LeRoy A. Wallace II of Westfield Mass., three daughters Linda Buswell, Marengo, Iowa, Judy Shimandle, LaGrange, Ga., LeRae Miller, Joplin, Mo.; two sisters, Naomi "Pete" Browning, Sarasota, Fla., Lucy Ochsenbein, Columbus, sister-in-law Mildred "Mickey" Wallace, Buena Park, Calif.; nine grandchildren and two great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, Charlie, Clarence and Raymond Wallace, four sisters Pauline Baldwin, Maxine Baldwin, Gladis Lucas, Arlene Crain and three infant siblings.
A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, July 5 at the Murdock Funeral Home, 132 E. Pine St. Columbus, Kan. Friends are welcome to attend.The Reverend Wallace Baldwin will officiate. Military Rites will be conducted by the American Legion Keith Reeves Post #3 of Columbus. A memorial scholarship fund has been established in LeRoy Wallace's name. Memorials may be sent to the family or left at the funeral home.
CLYDE EUGENE WALLINGFORD
GROVE, Okla.-Clyde Wallingford age 66 died Sat., Feb. 15, 2003 in the Freeman Hospital in Joplin, MO.
The son of Ora and Henrietta (Lubbers) Wallingford, he was born on July 29, 1936 in Labette County, KS. He attended grade school in Oswego, Kan. and graduated from Labette County High School in Altamont, Kan. in 1954. His life-long work as a machinist began at Boeing Aircraft, in Wichita, Kan. in 1954. He served in the Army from 1956-1961. Clyde went to work for KG & E Electric Co. in 1961 and transferred to their Neosho plant in Southeast Kan. in 1964. In 1985, he transferred to Wolfcreek Nuclear Power Plant at Burlington, Kan., from where he retired in 1995. He lived most of his life in Kansas and moved to Grove after retirement. Clyde especially enjoyed hunting, bass fishing, and family camping.
Clyde married Charlene Eads on April 18, 1959 in Oswego, Kan. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge in Oswego, a member of the Electrical Workers Union, and one of the founding members of the Oswego Bass Club.
Clyde was preceded in death by his parents and a sister Janice L. Wallingford.
Survivors: his wife Charlene Wallingford of Grove; 2 daughters, Carol Jean Eddington and husband, Ron of Oswego, Cathy Lynn Gilbreth and husband, Steve of Joplin, MO.; a brother, Jerald D. Wallingford of Derby, Kan.; 2 grandchildren, Chad & Jessica Eddington, and several nieces and nephews.
The funeral will be at the graveside in the Oswego Cemetery at 11 a.m. on Wed., Feb. 19 with the Grove Veteran Ritual Team giving veteran's rites. There will be a visitation for family and friends at the funeral home in Grove on Tues. at 6 p.m. The services are under the directions of the Worley-Luginbuel Funeral Home in Grove.
