Kathryn Sue May
Norman resident Kathryn Sue (Howard) May, 45, died Thursday, May 6, in Oklahoma City.
She was born March 6, 1959, in San Antonio, Texas, to Thomas Ewing Howard and Norma Doris (Whetstone) Howard.
On June 20, 2002, she married Larry May.
She was preceded in death by her grandparents, Paul Whetstone and Carl and Dora Howard.
Survivors include her husband, Larry May of the home; parents, Thomas and Norma of Norman; son, Jacob Zuker of Norman; four daughters and son-in-law, Jennifer and Chad Cochell of Norman, Casey May of Miami, Stacey May of Midwest City and Amy Crossfield of New York City, N.Y.; and two brothers and sisters-in-law, Tim and Jackie Howard of Tracy, Calif., and Thomas and Julie Howard of Alexandria, Va.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Wildwood Community Church at 1501 NE 24th St. in Norman.
Service will be 1 p.m. Tuesday at Wildwood Community Church in Norman with the Rev. Bruce Hess officiating.
Services are under the direction of Havenbrook Funeral Home in Norman.
Robert L. Batt
Shawnee resident Robert L. Batt, 67, died Tuesday, May 4, at his home.
On Dec. 17, 1936, he was born in Warwick to Amos A. Batt and Helen F. (Smith) Batt.
He married Clara Louise (Howell) and was a carpenter for the Shawnee School System for 20 years.
He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Walter Batt and Gary Batt.
Survivors include his wife, Clara Louise Howell Batt; three children, Robert "Bobby" Batt, Freddie Hale and Calvin Hale; three brothers, Gene Batt, LeRoy Batt and Don Batt; five sisters, Lilly Pippkin, Wanda Welch, Doris Allenbaugh, Ann Allenbaugh and Ruth Massy; eight grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.
Service will be 11 a.m. today at North East Freewill Baptist Church with the Rev. Michael McCauley officiating. Burial will be at Resthaven Memorial Park.
Resthaven Funeral Home is directing arrangements.
Claudine Taylor
Lifelong Shawnee resident Claudine (Davis) Taylor, 74, died Thursday, April 29, at a local nursing home.
She was born Jan. 22, 1930, in Shawnee to Fred Davis and Helen (Furbee) Davis. She worked as a cook at the Grand Café and Van's Pig Stand.
She was preceded in death by her parents and a set of twins, James Eugene Taylor Jr. and Jamie Sue Taylor.
Survivors include daughters, Linda L. Anderson Aman and Lois Anderson Yardy, both of Shawnee; brothers, Leslie, Charlie and Jimmie Davis; sister, Alma Spencer; four grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
Service will be 10 a.m. Monday at Gaskill Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Brown Cemetery.
Hurchel Norman Teeples
Former Shawnee resident Hurchel Norman Teeples, 82, died Saturday, May 1, at the Norman Veterans Center.
Graveside service will be 2 p.m. Monday at Tecumseh Cemetery with the Rev. Leroy Kerbo officiating.
Arrangements are under the direction of Gaskill Funeral Home.
Larona Ann Calkins
Larona Ann Calkins, 83, of Lawrence, Kan., died Saturday, May 1, at her home.
She was born June 19, 1920, in Oklahoma City to Dewitt D. and Johnnie Mae (Gaylor) Durall. She had lived in Lawrence since September 1991, after moving from Mesa, Ariz.
She was a homemaker and had worked as a secretary for Boeing Aircraft in Wichita, Kan., and Hughes Aircraft in Hawthorn, Calif.
She was a member of First Christian Church in Lawrence and the Christian Women's Fellowship at the church.
She married E. Lee Calkins Jr. on April 30, 1948, in Wichita. He preceded her in death March 5, 1991.
Also preceding her in death was a son, John Calkins, in 1995.
Survivors include her daughters, Katie Studebaker of Lawrence and Carol Murray of Wichita; a son, Neal Calkins of Moses Lake, Wash., 12 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren.
Service will be 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at Warren-McElwain Mortuary in Lawrence. Burial will be at Burlingame Cemetery in Burlingame, Kan.
Visitation will be 7 to 8:30 p.m. Monday at the mortuary. Memorial donations may be made to the Douglas County Visiting Nurses Association or the American Cancer Society and may be sent in care of Warren-McElwain Mortuary, 120 W. 13th St., Lawrence KS 66044-3402.
Mina Louise Alford
Mina Louise Alford, 86, of Tecumseh, died Saturday, May 1, at Sunset Estates Nursing Home.
Arrangements are pending with Cooper Funeral Home of Tecumseh.
Adolph Fredrick Pfeiffer
Adolph "Al" Frederick Pfeiffer of Meeker died Friday in Oklahoma City. He was 71.
Survivors include his wife, Vickie Pfeiffer of the home; two daughters, Terry NeSmith of Aurora, Colo., and Mary Welsh of St. Louis, Mo.; brother, Thomas Pfeiffer of St. Louis, Mo.; sister, Mary Ann Kaeutzman of St. Louis, Mo.; five grandchildren, one great-grandchild and many other relatives.
Graveside service will be 10 a.m. Monday at Rossville Cemetery with the Rev. David Lafferty officiating. Services are under the direction of the Parks Brothers Funeral Service of Chandler.
John C. Butts Sr.
John C. Butts Sr. of McLoud died Thursday at his residence. He was 84.
He was born Aug. 7, 1918, in Asher, to John Henry Butts Jr. and Rosalee (Herrin) Butts.
He was an Asher High School graduate and worked as an inspector and equipment specialist at Tinker Air Force Base.
He married Inez Chambless on June 21, 1952, in Okmulgee and she preceded him in death April 11.
He was a member of Lakeview Church of Christ and had lived in Asher, Shawnee, Midwest City and McLoud.
Also preceding him in death were two sisters, Mary and June.
Survivors include his son and daughter-in-law, John C. Jr. and Reina Butts of Magnolia, Texas; grandsons, John Earl and Joshua Butts; brother and sister-in-law, Virgil and Jean Butts of Okmulgee, sisters-in-law Margaret Chambless of Wayne, Sylvia Chambless of McLoud, Maxine Gasaway of Okmulgee, Vivian McCurley of Okmulgee, and Oleta Newton of Shawnee; and a number of nieces and nephews.
Services will be 10 a.m. Monday at the chapel of Walker Funeral Service with Ben Glover officiating. Burial will be at Tecumseh Cemetery.
Opal S. (Walker) Rocke
Longtime Shawnee resident Opal Selina (Walker) Rocke, 99, died Wednesday in Tucson, Ariz.
She was born Oct. 26, 1903, in Marshall, Texas, the first of three children of Mabel Claire (Scott) Walker and Francis "Frank" Walker.
The family moved to Shawnee in 1918 and she graduated from Shawnee High School in 1920. She attended Phillips University and Oklahoma Baptist university.
In 1931, she married Rudolph C. Troike and moved to Brownsville, Texas. He died in 1941 and, in 1952, she married Frank Rocke, who preceded her in death in 1968.
She returned to Shawnee in 1970 and moved to Arizona in 1996.
She was a bookkeeper and accountant, and a lifelong member of the Christian Church, where she was an active leader in her early years. After her return, she was a member of St. John Lutheran Church and its Sunlight Center.
Preceding her in death were her brother, Glendon H. Walker, and sister, Elizabeth (Walker) Whaley.
Surviving are her son, Rudolph C. Troike Jr. of Tucson, Ariz.; daughter, Tamara (Troike) Ply of Niceville, Fla.; three grandchildren, Nathan Ply, Cynthia (Ply) Jenkins, and Michael Ply, and four great-grandchildren.
Services will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at St. John Lutheran Church, with burial in Marshall, Texas. Arrangements are under the direction of Gaskill-Owens Funeral Chapel.
Florence M. Armstrong
Florence M. Armstrong, 79, York, Pa., formerly of Shawnee, died Friday in York, Pa.
She was born Oct. 13, 1923, in Bristow, the daughter of Marvin Lane and Martha Fern (Hall) King.
She attended Bristow Public Schools and graduated from Bristow High School.
Armstrong later attended Draughon Business College in Oklahoma City.
She married Darrell D. Armstrong January 1, 1940, in Tulsa.
Armstrong lived in Shawnee for about 20 years.
She worked as a radio dispatcher for Ventura County, Calif.
She was a lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and was the secretary for Little League Baseball of Ventura, Calif.
Survivors include her daughter, Sue SanMartin of Shawnee; son, James Michael Armstrong of Missouri; brothers, Ted King of Shawnee and Bob King and wife Louise of Glenpool; seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Armstrong was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, three brothers and one great-grandchild.
Services will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at Resthaven Funeral Home chapel with the Rev. Leroy Kerbo officiating.
Burial will follow at Resthaven Memorial Park under the direction of Resthaven Funeral Home of Shawnee.
Memorials may be made to VFW Ladies Auxiliary Post No. 1317.
John L. Smith
John L. Smith, 84, Shawnee, died Friday.
He was born Dec. 15, 1918, in Dover, Tenn.
He was a member of Shawnee First Church of the Nazarene and a retired Nazarene minister. He also was a retired educator from Earlsboro and McLoud schools.
Survivors include his wife of 63 years, Lanore; son and daughter-in-law, Wendell and Kathy Smith of Shawnee; brothers, James and Otho Smith; sisters, Ella Warfied and Opal Duncan, great-grandson, Zachariah, and many other grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Graveside service will be 10 a.m. Monday at Resthaven Memorial Park in Shawnee under the direction of Resthaven Funeral Home.

Alice May (Davis) Stafford
Alice May (Davis) Stafford, 87, of Shawnee died Friday at a Tulsa hospital.
She was born March 6, 1916, in Shawnee to J. Hoyt and Jennie C. Davis. She was raised on a farm northwest of Shawnee, near what is now Stafford Lake Estates.
She graduated from Shawnee High School in 1933. She was active in 4-H and helped her parents on the farm until she married Leo E. Stafford on March 6, 1937.
They resided in Hominy, Bristow and McAlester, and settled in Blackwell in 1945.
She was a homemaker and was employed by Hunt's Department Store as a buyer in ladies ready-to-wear. She was active in Beta Sigma Phi and the First Methodist Church.
Upon retirement in 1974, they moved back to Shawnee, where she cared for her parents.
In 1999, she moved to a retirement community in Bartlesville. In 2002, she moved to Tulsa.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband.
Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law, Jim and Darlene Stafford of Enid; daughter and son-in-law, Paula and Gary Bray of Tulsa; five grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; a sister, Helen Hamby of Pawhuska, and a brother, Bill Davis of Shawnee.
Services will be 2 p.m. Monday in the chapel of Walker Funeral Service with the Rev. Doug Parker officiating. Burial will be at Tecumseh Cemetery.
