Vera M. Dunaway
Vera M. Dunaway of Shawnee died Wednesday at a local hospital. She was 79.
She was born Oct. 27, 1921, in Sayre, the daughter of Guy and Dovie Dearman.
Mrs. Dunaway, who is retired from Wolverine, was a member of Liberty Baptist Church.
She was a longtime resident of Shawnee.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, one sister and one brother.
Survivors include four children and their spouses, Marge Harwell, Gastonia, N.C.; Jean and Brady Bennett, Piolet Mountain, N.C.; Bud and Sheila Dunaway, Amelia, Ohio; Deborah and Donnie Roupe, Mesa, Ariz.; one sister, Betty Barnett, Tecumseh; 13 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.
Graveside services will be 2 p.m. Friday at Highland Cemetery with Bill Matthews and Phil Thompson officiating. Services are under the direction of Roesch-Walker Funeral Chapel.
Rosie Gaines
Rosie Gaines died Tuesday in Shawnee. She was 65.
She was born in Shawnee on July 19, 1935, the daughter of Florence M. and Ressie (Johnson) Gaines. She attended Dunbar School and had lived in Shawnee and Tecumseh all her life. She was a production operator at Allen Bradley for many years.
She was a member of Galilee Baptist Church, the Jet Setters Club and the Order of the Eastern Star in Oklahoma City.
Preceding her in death were her parents, one son, Larry Gaines, three sisters and four brothers.
Survivors include daughters and sons-in-law, Patricia and Billy Carson; Jamesetta and Walter Wilson; and Gaila Gaines and her fiance Gregory Talton, all of Shawnee; three sons, Archie Gaines; John Gaines and David Gaines, all of Shawnee; three sisters, Dora Owens; Esther Davis and Lucile Marshall, all of Shawnee; 14 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at Galilee Baptist Church. The Rev. Wilbert Tripplett and deacon Hiram Ryan will officiate. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery; arrangements are under the direction of Cooper Funeral Home of Tecumseh.
Patrick Altier
Patrick "Bo" Altier died Tuesday in Temple, Texas. He was 9.
He was born Jan. 4, 1991, in Oklahoma City. He was the son of Pat Altier and Joy (Reed) White.
He lived in the Davenport area for most of his life. He attended Davenport Public Schools where he was very active in all school activities and went to the First Baptist Church of Davenport.
Survivors include father and stepmother, Pat and Kim Altier of Austin, Texas; mother and stepfather, Joy and Johnny White of Davenport; one brother, Brett Michael Altier of Davenport; one sister, Blayre Teka Altier of Davenport; grandparents, Peggy Coleman of Pawnee; Paul Altier of Masland, Ohio; Linda Sue Goodeagle of Stillwater; Jerry and Judy White of Davenport; great-grandparents, Jerry Perrine, Kenneth Goodcagle, Geneva White and other relatives and friends.
Services will be 2 p.m. Saturday at the Davenport High School Gymnasium with Rev. Michael Mitchell officiating. Burial will follow in the Davenport Cemetery under the direction of Parks Brothers Funeral Service in Chandler.
Clarence Clayton Turner
Clarence Clayton Turner died Thursday at a Seminole hospital. He was 91.
Services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Swearingen Funeral Chapel. Further information is pending.
Thelma Campbell
Thelma Campbell of Meeker died Thursday.
Services are pending under the direction of Parks Brothers Funeral Home, Chandler.
Anita O'Neal
Tecumseh resident Anita O'Neal died Friday. She was 20.
She was born Oct. 5, 1979, in Shawnee to Randal O'Neal and Mary Rae Myers.
She was a 1998 graduate of Prague High School. In high school, she was a member of FFH, in which she served as parlimentarian and secretary, a member of Key Club, Student Council secretary and junior class representative.
She was a member of National Honor Society for three years and yearbook staff for two years. She designed the 1996-97 yearbook cover and was a student of the month. She was attending Seminole State College.
She was a former Prague resident and was living in Tecumseh.
Survivors include her fiance, Jason Jeske, Earlsboro; mother, Mary Rae Myers, of the home; father and stepmother, Randal and Judy O'Neal, Choctaw; brothers and sisters-in-law, Randy and Tamika O'Neal, Tecumseh, and Frank and Laura O'Neal, Tecumseh; stepbrother and his spouse, Tommy and Debbie Wilkerson, Tulsa; stepsister, Viola Wilkerson, Shawnee; grandmothers, Mary C. Myers and Ora Mae O'Neal, both of Tecumseh; stepgrandmother, Vina Little, Seminole; and numerous other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her uncle, Raymond Myers, and her grandfathers, Raymond Myers and Wendell O'Neal.
Services will be 2 p.m. today at the First Baptist Church, Prague, with Brother Tim Emmons officiating. Burial will be in Tecumseh Cemetery under the direction of Cooper Funeral Home, Tecumseh.
Ernest Holik
Ernest Holik died Saturday in Prague. He was 78.
He was born in Lincoln County near Payson Feb. 14, 1921, the son of Joseph and Rosie (Svarc) Holik.
He lived in Prague and was a Lincoln County resident all his life. He was owner and operator of Holik's Station in Prague from 1951 until his retirement Dec. 31, 1984.
Holik was a member of the Prague United Methodist Church, American Legion and ZCBJ Lodge No. 46 in Prague.
He served in the U.S. Army during World War II in the China Burma Theater of Operations with the Merrill's Marauders. He received the Asiatic Pacific Service Medal, the American Theater Service Medal and the Good Conduct Medal. He married Ruby England June 24, 1948, in Prague.
Preceding him in death were his parents, four brothers, one sister and two sons-in-law.
Surviving include his wife, Ruby Holik of the home; two daughters, Dianne VanCuren and Donna Smith; one son and daughter-in-law, Tim and Cindy Holik of Prague; three brothers, Frank Holik of Hartford, Conn.; Vence Mlynek of Prague; Archie Mlynek of Loveland, Colo.; two sisters, Mildred Toedtli of Diamond Springs, Calif.; Lilly Dotson of Las Vegas, Nev.; and five grandchildren, Crystal and Jeremy VanCuren; Shawna Smith, Adam and Dathan Holik.
Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Parks Brothers Funeral Home Chapel in Prague with Rev. Tim Emmons and the Rev. Jim Powell officiating. Burial will follow in the Prague Cemetery.
Barbara Jane Middleton
Barbara Jane Middleton, 62, died Saturday in Oklahoma City.
She was born July 2, 1937, in Prague, the daughter of Robert and Eldora Jane (Wallis) Johnson. She was a resident of the Meeker area and was a member of the First Christian church in Meeker as well as the Easter Star. Before retiring, she worked at Tinker Air Force Base as an inventory clerk.
She graduated from Prague High School in 1954 and married Charles R. Middleton March 24, 1954. She was preceded in death by her parents and one sister, Wilma Wilson.
Surviving are her husband, Charles R. Middleton of the home; two sons and one daughter-in-law, Raymond Gene Middleton of Prague; Johnny Ray and Betty Middleton of Macomb; one daughter and son-in-law, Darla and Joe Dugger of Coppell, Texas; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Robert and Billie Johnson of Prague; Larry and Tina Johnson of Prague; two sisters and one brother-in-law, Hazel and Hershell McDaniel of Seminole; and Doris Duncan of Prague; seven grandchildren, three great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be 2 p.m. today at Parks Brothers Funeral Home Chapel in Prague with Pastor Bob Croucher officiating.
Jack Masters
Jack Masters died Sunday, Dec. 26, in Taylor, Texas. He was 67.
He was born April 13, 1932, in Asher to Wilburn and Pearl (Lowden) Masters.
Survivors include his wife, Sue Leech Masters, Taylor, Texas; daughter, Marianne Hockman and husband Andy and their children, Alison, Rebecca and Lauren Hockman, all of Westhills, Calif.; stepson, Bob Banks and wife Connie and their children, Kristen and Ashley Banks all of Rockdale, Texas; sisters, Alice Moore, Midwest City; Lavada Ellison, Shawnee.
Funeral services were held Thursday in Austin, Texas.
Albert J. Straka
Albert J. Straka died Sunday in Shawnee. He was 70.
Services will be at noon Wednesday at Cooper Funeral Home. Burial will be at Czech Cemetery, Oklahoma City.
Further arrangements are pending.
Millard Thomas Jr.
Millard "Bud" Thomas Jr. of Shawnee died Saturday. He was 75.
He was born Feb. 6, 1924, in Okemah. He was the son of Millard and Gertrude Hibler Thomas.
He graduated from Okemah High School and attended Oklahoma State University for two years. Thomas served in the U.S. Air Force during World War II. He received the Silver Star, Bonze Service Star and Purple Heart.
He married Ruth Goins on March 13, 1952, at Okemah.
He was employed at Tinker Air Force Base. He also had been a driller in the oil fields and worked on the Alaska Pipeline.
He was a member of the Masonic Lodge, 32-degree Mason, Okemah, McAlester Consistory and First Christian Church of Okemah.
Survivors include his wife, Ruth Thomas of the home; two daughters and son-in-law, Marsha and Charles Hughes, Glenpool; Maria Ward, Shawnee; two sons, Robert Chip Thomas, Shawnee; David Thomas, Shawnee; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren, one sister, Mildred Evelyn Rutland, Independence, Kan.; two nephews, Jeff and Cliff Rutland; one niece, Rebecca Barr, Shawnee.
Services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Roesch-Walker Funeral Chapel with Dr. Larry Adams. Burial will take place at 3 p.m. at Highland Cemetery in Okemah.
Iris Odean Sweaney
Iris Odean Sweaney, 78, Harjo died Sunday at a local hospital.
She was born April 7, 1921, in Maud. She was the daughter of Homer V. Van Meter and Detsyl (Daugherty) Van Meter.
She married Charles Wilbur Sweaney on Sept. 26, 1945, in Shawnee.
Mrs. Sweaney worked as a homemaker. She was a member of the Church of Christ in Maud.
She was preceded in death by her parents and husband Charles W. Sweaney on Nov. 22, 1990.
Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law, Charles K. and Myra Sweaney of Harjo; two granddaughters, Michelle Edwards of Tecumseh; Tammy Sweaney of Harjo; two great-grandsons, Kaylan Sweaney of Harjo; Derreck Edwards of Tecumseh; one brother and sister-in-law, W. Homer and Nora B. Van Meter of Pharaoh; one nephew, Donald Ray Van Meter of Tulsa.
Services will be held 10 a.m. Wednesday at Trinity Baptist Church in Maud with Junior Mize and Rev. Darrell Whitten officiating. Burial will take place at Cummings Cemetery in Maud under the direction of Knight Funeral Home.
Jo Ann Lewis
Shawnee resident Jo Ann Lewis died Thursday at an Oklahoma City hospital. She was 64.
Mrs. Lewis was born April 12, 1935, in Ada to Hugh and Emily Simpson. She attended Ada Schools and was a licensed practical nurse at Independence Manor before retirement. She married James Lewis in 1951 in Ada.
Survivors include her husband, James Lewis, of the home; children, Darrell Lewis, Michael Forbach, Jeffery Lewis, Robert Lewis and Phillip Lewis, all of Shawnee; Tony Lewis, Tuttle; Melissa Kilcrease, Ada; brother, LeRoy Simpson of Noble and Mitchell Lewis; a sister, Faye Willwant, California; and two grandchildren, Savannah Forbach and Christopher Lewis.
