Floyd L. Perryman
Former long-time Shawnee resident Floyd L. Perryman, 80, of Oklahoma City died Saturday at his home.
He was born Sept. 20, 1920, in Gainsville, Texas, the son of Arch Henry and Nora Ellen (Rasure) Perryman.
Perryman was reared in the South Rock Creek area. He attended school at South Rock Creek Elementary School and graduated from Shawnee High School.
He married Mattie Frances Bass in 1953 in Colorado Springs, Ark.
Perryman and his family owned and operated a sand-dredging business for more than 40 years in the Cromwell area.
At 17, Perryman joined the U.S. Marine Corps. Although he had fulfilled his tour in the Philippines, the bombing of Pearl Harbor necessitated his stay in the Philippines. He was captured on the island of Corregidor and was a Japanese prisoner of war for more than three years. He was liberated and released in 1945.
Perryman was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Prisoners of War/Missing in Action. He also was a former member of the Lions Club.
The Perrymans lived in Shawnee from 1923 until 1989 when they moved to Oklahoma City.
Perryman was an avid pilot.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Douglas Perryman.
Perryman is survived by his wife of the home; son, Jeffrey A. Perryman of Shawnee; daughter and son-in-law, Ge´Nell and Rick Austin of Shawnee; five grandchildren, Michelle Belcher, Jeffrey Kane Catlett, Floyd Joel Catlett, Hunter Floyd Perryman and Ricci Michelle Ferguson; six great-grandchildren; two sister, Maurine Rice of Eufaula and Delores O'Toole of Colorado; and one brother, Bill Perryman of Prague.
Funeral services
will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at Gaskill-Owens Funeral Chapel with burial at Resthaven Memorial Park under the direction of Gaskill-Owens.
Memorials may be made in Perryman's name to the Veterans of Foreign Wars or Disabled American Veterans.
Robert Y. Duval Jr.
Eighty-seven-year-old Shawnee resident Robert Y. "Bob" Duval Jr. died Thursday at an Oklahoma City hospital.
He was born Jan. 29, 1914, in Moreland, Ark., the son of Robert Sr. and Lula Duval.
Duval began working in road construction in 1937 and started his business in 1946. He constructed the road up Mt. Scott in the Wichita Moutains near Lawton.
In 1972, he retired and sold the business to his son, Robert Y. Duval III.
Duval also was a rancher who raised Appaloosa and thoroughbred horses in the 1960s and early '70s. Recently, he raised limousin cattle and was a real estate developer.
He married Georgia Lightner July 5, 1936, in Shawnee.
He was a member of Immanuel Baptist Church.
Duval was preceded in death by his parents and four sisters.
He is survived by his wife of the home; five children and their spouses, Georgetta Crosser of Shawnee, Robert Y. III and Martha Duval of Altus, Gretchen and Henry Dolive of Oklahoma City, Steve and Vicki Duval of Shawnee and Gayla and James Nicholson of North Richland Hills, Texas; eight grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services
for Duval will be 2 p.m. Monday at Roesch-Walker Funeral Chapel with Dr. Jeff Moore officiating. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery under the direction of Roesch-Walker.
Memorials may be made the Immanuel Baptist Church building fund or the American Heart Association.
Mildred Sherfield
Mildred Sherfield, 70, of Shawnee died Wednesday at her home.
She was born Aug. 28, 1930, in Yeager, Okla., the daughter of George and Lucy Parker.
She was a retail grocery checker at I.G.A. and Humpty Dumpty supermarkets for many years.
On June 4, 1946, she married Arvel Sherfield in Holdenville.
Sherfield was a member of Capital Heights Missionary Baptist Church, Holdenville.
The Sherfields lived in the Holdenville/Wewoka area before moving to Shawnee in 1958.
Sherfield is preceded in death by her parents; husband; son, Larry Sherfield; two sisters; and four brothers.
She is survived by daughter and son-in-law, Beverley and George Hampton of Noble; four grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; one brother; and two sisters.
Graveside services
were 10 a.m. Saturday at Resthaven Memorial Park with the Rev. Phil Thompson officiating. Roesch-Walker Funeral Chapel was in charge of services.
Frank Eugene Winder
Frank Eugene Winder died Saturday in his Shawnee home at the age of 66.
Services are pending under the direction of Resthaven Funeral Home.
Judy Marlene Brown
Dale resident Judy Marlene Brown, 47, died Saturday at a local hospital.
She was born Jan. 19, 1954, in Shawnee, the daughter of John Paul and Mary (Rickey) Brown.
She was a graduate of Dale High School and Seminole Junior College where she earned an associate of science degree in nursing. She worked as a registered nurse at hospitals in Shawnee and Oklahoma City.
Brown was a local resident all her life. She was a member of the Dale Church of Christ.
She was preceded in death by her mother on Jan. 13, 1995.
Survivors are her father of the home; brother and sister-in-law, Terry and Treva Brown of Tecumseh; sister and brother-in-law, Nancy and Murel Longnecker of Shawnee; and a number of nieces and nephews.
Graveside services
for Brown will be 2 p.m. Monday at Dale Cemetery with Dewayne Thomas officiating. Viewing will be held until 1:15 p.m. Monday at Roesch-Walker Funeral Chapel, who is in charge of the services.
Zelma Lorena Hill Markwell
Zelma Lorena Hill Markwell, 89, of Houston, Texas, died Saturday in Houston.
Services are pending and will be announced by Roesch-Walker Funeral Chapel.
Troy Hollon
Former Stroud resident Troy "Buck" Hollon died Thursday in Odessa, Texas. He was 81.
The son of Henry Webster and Hattie Oma (Sparks) Hollon was born in Checotah on Dec. 31, 1919.
He had moved from Stroud to Odessa in May.
Hollon was a member of the Church of Christ in Stroud.
He also was a member of the American Legion in Stroud and served in the U.S. Army during World War II.
On Sept. 24, 1945, he and Willa Marguerite Newman were married in Pampa, Texas.
His parents, three brothers and one sister preceded Hollon in death.
Survivors include his wife of the home; sons and daughters-in-law, Larry and Sharon Hollon of Nashville, Tenn., and Rick and Sally Hollon of Odessa; daughter, Marilyn Sinclair of Lovington, N.M.; sisters, Helen Weems of Andrews, Texas, and Ruby Reagin of Indianapolis, Ind.; eight grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Services will be 2 p.m. Monday at the Church of Christ in Stroud. Loren Gieger will officiate. Burial will follow at Stroud Cemetery.
Parks Brothers Funeral Service, Stroud, is in charge of the arrangements.
Esther Funchess
Esther "Ruth" Funchess, 80, Okemah, died Friday at an Okemah hospital.
The daughter of Matt and Winnie Davis was born July 13, 1920, in Micawber, Okla. She grew up near Paden.
On July 10, 1937, she married Joe Funchess in Okemah. They farmed near Paden and in California.
In 1954, they worked for Limoneira Ranch, the largest fruit orchard in the world. Mrs. Funchess was rated as a world-class fruit packer. She held many records for being the fastest orange packer in world, packing 640 boxes per day. She was sent to Australia twice to teach the rapid pack technique.
On Sept. 8, 1982, she and her husband retired from Limoneira Ranch. At that time, they returned to Okemah.
Mrs. Funchess was a member of First Assembly of God in Okemah. She served for two years on the Okemah City Council and as the director of the Senior Citizen Center for more than 15 years. She also managed the Senior Nutrition Program at the Senior Citizen Center.
Survivors include her husband of Okemah; two sons and daughters-in-law, Edward "Gene" and Betty Funchess of Carlsbad, N.M., and Joe "Spencer" and Patricia Funchess of Ventura, Calif.; two daughters and sons-in-law, Dolores and Phil Hackler and Winnie and Don Cox, all of Hemet, Calif.; her brother, Red Davis of Tornillo, Texas; two sisters, Nell Mauldin of Seminole and Agnes McCullar of Shawnee; as well as 11 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren.
Viewing will be from 1 p.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday and from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday at Parks Brothers Funeral Home, Okemah.
Services will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at First Assembly of God Church in Okemah with the Rev. Steve Lowrance officiating. The Rev. Tom Funchess and the Rev. Lanny Funchess, grandsons of Mrs. Funchess, will assist in the services.
Burial will follow at Highland Cemetery in Okemah.
Arrangements are under the direction of Denton-Funchess Funeral Home, Carlsbad, N.M., and Parks Brothers Funeral Home, Okemah.
Andrew Gleson Cosar
Andrew Gleson Cosar died Thursday at the age of 60.
The Konawa resident was born Aug. 8, 1940, in Wewoka. The son of Winnie Mae (Harjo) Burgess and Wonnie Cosar lived most of his life in the Konawa area.
In September 1963, he and Virginia were married in Tulsa.
Cosar, a police officer, served the Konawa Police Department, as head of tribal security for Seminole Nation Tribal Complex in Wewoka. He was ordained in 1970 as a deacon at Okmulgee Indian Baptist Church. He continued his work as a deacon at Seminole Baptist Indian Church in Konawa.
Cosar also served in the armed forces for 18 years. He was a SP5 in the 120th Supply and Service Battalion, from which he was honorably discharged.
Preceding him in death were his parents.
Survivors include his wife of the home; two sons, Anthony Gordon and Mickey Lee Cosar, both of Konawa; two daughters, Andrea Lily Cosar and Amy LaWanda (Cosar) Anderson, both of Konawa; two brothers, Jimmy Carpitcher of Tulsa and Larry James Johnson of Altus; four sisters, Anita Mae (Cosar) Holuby of Oklahoma City; Jackie Ann (Carpitcher) Kernal of Ada; Julia (Carpitcher) Isaac of Ardmore, and Joanna (Carpitcher) Walker of Byng; seven grandchildren and a number of other relatives.
Services will be held at 1 p.m. Monday at Seminole Indian Baptist Church. The Rev. Houston Tiger and the Rev. Woody Fields will officiate. Burial will follow at Cosar Family Cemetery. Night services will be held from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday at Pickard Funeral Chapel and Sunday night at Seminole Indian Baptist Church.
