Oletha Whitman
Former Shawnee resident Oletha Whitman, 81, died Tuesday in Wichita, Kan.
She was born June 18, 1920, in Watonga, the daughter of Cornelius Marion and Anna (Kroger) Dye.
She had graduated from high school and worked as a machinist at the Sylvania plant. Whitman also repaired watches at Shoshones and Wal-Mart.
She lived in Shawnee until her 1997 move to Wichita.
Preceding her in death were her husband, Florin Earl Whitman, parents and nine brothers and sisters.
Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law, Larry and Heidi Whitman of Wichita; stepson and his wife, James and Nancy Whitman of Tulsa; grandsons, Joshua and David Whitman of Wichita; granddaughters, Laura and Stephanie Whitman of Tulsa; sister, Mabel of San Diego, Calif.; and several nieces and nephews.
Services will be 10 a.m. Friday at Gaskill-Owens Funeral Chapel. The Rev. Don Rackley will officiate. Burial will be at Fairview Cemetery.
Arrangements are under the direction of Gaskill-Owens Funeral Chapel.
Vernon Bert Hodges
Shawnee resident Vernon Bert Hodges died Tuesday at a Shawnee nursing home. He was 83.
Hodges was born July 31, 1916, in Earlsboro, the son of Mick and Ottie Hodges. He attended Shawnee High School and served with the U.S. Army during World War II serving from 1942 through 1943. He was a grocery store owner for 55 years.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Mick and Ottie Hodges; and a brother, Ralph Hodges.
He is survived by three sisters, Mabel Riffenbury, Auburn, Calif.; Lorene Power, San Diego, Calif.; Dorothy King, Tulsa; and special friends Darrell Prather, Shawnee; Damon Caylor, Shawnee; and Hada Hendershot, Shawnee.
Services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday with the Rev. Bill Matthews and Phil Thompson officiating.
Burial will be held at Resthaven Memorial Park under the direction of Roesch-Walker Funeral Chapel.
Lillie Enns
Seminole resident Lillie Enns died Friday in a Seminole nursing home. She was 88.
Mrs. Enns was born on Feb. 19, 1911, in Wewoka, the daughter of Joseph Albert and Katherine (McKeowen) Danielson. She married Alvin Schneider, then John Enns.
She was a retired beauty operator who was a member of the Seventh Day Adventist Church in Seminole. Mrs. Enns had moved to Seminole five years ago from Bakersfield, Calif.
She was preceded in death by her first husband, Alvin Schneider; second husband, John Enns; and her parents, Joseph and Katherine Danielson.
Enns is survived by two daughters, Marlene Blevins, Cimarron, N.M.; Norma Jean Rasco, Engelwood, Colo.; a brother, Oscar Danielson, Wewoka; four sisters, Betty Freeman, Shawnee; Marie Ehrlich, Seminole; Dean Freeman, Midwest City; Carrie Smith, Shawnee; and four grandchildren.
Services will be held at 9 a.m. Thursday at Oakwood Cemetery with Pastor Vanoy Fitch officiating.
Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery in Wewoka under the direction of Swearingen Funeral Home of Seminole.
Elza Nevada Dill
Shawnee resident Elza Nevada Dill died Friday in a local nursing home. She was 95.
Mrs. Dill was born on March 1, 1904, in Violet Hill, Ark., the daughter of the Rev. H.W. and Josie (Verner) Ross. She attended school in Oxford, Ark., Melbourne, Ark., and Mountain Home, Ark. before moving to Shawnee.
She married Norris R. Dill on Sept. 19, 1924, in Hardy, Ark. Mrs. Dill was a schoolteacher in Myron, Ark., before she became a homemaker.
She was a Sunday school teacher at the First Church of God, a member of the American Association of Retired Persons, a member of Young at Heart and served as president, district leader and state historian for the Women's Missionary Society at the First Church of God.
Mrs. Dill was preceded in death by her husband, Norris Dill; her parents, the Rev. H.W. and Josie Ross; and two sisters, Opal Martin; Zella McCoy.
She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Darleta and Larry Moore, Willis, Texas; a son and daughter-in-law, Morris M. and Wilma Dill, Broken Arrow; three grandsons, Micheal Kevin Dill, Conover, N.C.; Bryan Keith Dill, Palmetta, Ga.; Russell Nathan Moore, Conroe, Texas; a granddaughter and her husband, Karen Deniece and Lee Baker, Broken Arrow; two great-granddaughters, Laura and Erin Worel, Broken Arrow; and a nephew Marrenn H. McCoy.
The family will receive relatives and friends from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. today at the First Church of God chapel, Ninth and Shawnee.
Memorials may be made to the First Church of God or to Golden Rule Nursing Home.
Services will be held at 1 p.m. today at the First Church of God with the Rev. Joe Faircloth, Pastor Tom Moore and the Rev. Delbert Akin officiating.
Burial will be Resthaven Memorial Park under the direction of Resthaven Funeral Home of Shawnee.
Denise Ann Dervin
Denise Ann Dervin died Monday in Tulsa. She was 35.
She was born on July 17, 1964 in Stroud, the daughter of Robert and Jo Ann (Sallee) Dowdy. She lived in Stroud all her life and worked as a secretary. Mrs. Dervin was a member of the Stroud Christian Church.
Mrs. Dervin was preceded in death by her father, Robert Dowdy; and her grandparents.
Survivors include her son, Ryan, of the home; a daughter, Kasey, of the home; her mother, Jo Ann Dowdy, Stroud; three brothers, Mike Dowdy, Bethany; Jason Dowdy, Davenport; Justin Dowdy, Stroud; and other relatives and friends.
Viewing will be held from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, at the Stroud Christian Church.
Burial will be held in the Stroud Cemetery under the direction of Parks Brothers Funeral Home in Stroud.
Robert Warren McMurtrey
Former Shawnee resident Robert (Bob) Warren McMurtrey died Monday, Aug. 23, in Moore Haven, Fla.
He is survived by a son, Joe McMurtrey, Minco; a daughter, Susan Fielder, Oxford, Ga.; his mother, Alta Mae Hall, Shawnee; and four grandsons.
Services were held Friday in Moore Haven, Fla.
Elder L. Shankle
Elder L. Shankle of Tecumseh died Monday in Tecumseh. He was 78.
Shankle was born June 28, 1923, in Stigler, Okla., to John S. and Gertrude (Packwood) Shankle.
He was reared in Stigler and Eufaula and lived in California before moving to Tecumseh in 1950. He later lived in Shreveport, La., then returned to Tecumseh.
He worked in civil service as a radio and radar technician and retired in 1973.
He was a member of Bethel Acres Assembly Church.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Hugh and Boyd, sister, Idabelle Fisher, and daughter-in-law, Sarah Shankle.
Survivors include his daughter and son-in-law, Wanda Sue and Oren Swenson, Shawnee; four sons and three daughters-in-law, Gary and Dena Shankle, Tecumseh, John and Twanna Shankle, Shreveport, La., Rick Shankle, Shreveport, and Dan and Marsha Shankle, Shreveport; sister, Floral Hurst, Tecumseh; brother, Levi Shankle, Tecumseh; 14 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and many other relatives and friends.
Services will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Bethel Acres Assembly Church with the Rev. Lonnie Hurst and the Rev. Ronnie Hurst officiating. Burial will be in Tecumseh Cemetery under the direction of Cooper Funeral Home.
Willa Mae Johnson
Willa Mae Johnson of Konawa died Monday at the age of 97.
Johnson was born July 23, 1904, in Konawa to Sara Belle and Frank Oliver Baggett.
She married Ray Allen Johnson on March 6, 1921, in Konawa.
She was a licensed practical nurse and lived in Konawa most of her life.
Johnson was a member of the Konawa Methodist Church. She also was a member of the Rebekah Lodge.
She was preceded in death by her husband, two brothers, four sisters, daughter-in-law and two sons-in-law.
Survivors include two sons and daughter-in-law, Ray A. Johnson Jr., Hastings, Fla., Larry and Darlene Johnson, Konawa; two daughters, Mildred Owen, Midwest City; Modena Balay, Ada; 13 grandchildren; and many great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
Services will be 10 a.m. Thursday at Pickard Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Pam Shirk officiating. Burial will follow at Konawa Cemetery.
L.W. Collins
L.W. "Bill" Collins of Shawnee died Monday at an Oklahoma City hospital. He was 76.
Collins was born Feb. 6, 1925, in Ponca City to Walter and Ethel Collins.
He attended Robert E. Lee Bible College, Cleveland, Tenn., and served in the U.S. Army during World War II.
He was a salesman and miner.
On Aug. 26, 1946, he married Wilma Johnston in Armor, Kan.
He lived 40 years in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, where he was a member of Assembly of God Church. He moved from Belen, N.M., to Shawnee about two years ago.
He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Betty Lou Coble; and daughter, Jeani Rafferty.
Survivors include his wife Wilma Collins of the home; three sons and daughters-in-law, David and Gina Collins, Boise, Idaho, Dwayne and Angela Collins, Wenatchee, Wash., and Mark and Sherri Collins, Coeur d'Alene, Idaho; 11 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; brother, Raymond Collins, Oswego, Kan.; four sisters, Hazel Thomas, Sallisaw, Martie Bretches, Phoenix, Ariz., Mary Jane Carr, Kansas City, Kan., and Wanda Howell, Albuquerque, N.M.
Services will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Glad Tidings Assembly of God church with the Rev. Tracy A. Barnett officiating. Burial will be in Tecumseh Cemetery under the direction of Roesch-Walker Funeral Chapel.
Glenna Pearl Meade
Shawnee resident Glenna Pearl Meade died Monday in a local hospital at the age of 83.
She was born Oct. 31, 1917, in Canute, Okla., to Charlie and Probey Brooks (Bonny) Powell.
She attended school in Clinton. She was a member of the Free Will Baptist Church.
Meade was preceded in death by her husband, William Everett Meade; four sisters; two brothers; stepson; daughter-in-law; and great-granddaughter.
Survivors include a stepson and his wife, Irl J. and Nadeen Meade of Wewoka; seven grandchildren and spouses, Teresa Campbell and Jackie Smith of Shawnee, Alisa and Dean Krakel of Conifer, Colo., Frank and Debbie Meade, Perry, Ralph and Janie Meade of Deer Creek, Okla., Jay I. and Glenda Meade of Shawnee, and Kenny Meade and Michell Peard of Tecumseh; 17 great-grandchildren; and three nieces.
A graveside service will be 11 a.m. today at Neal Cemetery with the Rev. Bill Ashworh officiating. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Roesch-Walker Funeral Chapel.
