Bennie Ellis
Bennie Ellis of Shawnee died Monday in a local nursing home. He was 63.
He was born in Stigler, Okla., on Sept. 15, 1935, to Harvey Ellis and Nora (Hayes) Ellis. He attended Fort Gibson Public Schools, and was a retired truck driver. He married Fannie Jo Sikes in 1957 in Muskogee. He was a veteran of the Korean Conflict while serving in the U.S. Army.
He was member of the Pentecostal Church of God and lived in Shawnee since 1987.
Preceding him in death were his parents and his wife.
Surviving are a son, Thomas J. Ellis of Shawnee; four grandsons and three granddaughters, Tommy Ellis, Aaron Ellis, Thomas Ellis, Jeremy Ellis, Amber Ellis, Amanda Ellis and Melissa Ellis.
Services will be 1 p.m. Thursday at Gaskill-Owens Funeral Chapel with the Rev. LeRoy Kerbo officiating. Burial will be at Johnson Cemetery.
Arrangements are under the direction of Gaskill-Owens Funeral Chapel.
Dorothy Lee Cooper
Dorothy Lee Cooper of Guthrie died Sunday. She was 72.
She was born July 7, 1927, in Carter, Okla., to Charles and Josie Dyer. She was a longtime resident of Guthrie and was a homemaker.
Preceding her in death were her husband, parents, a sister and two brothers.
Surviving are two daughters and sons-in-law, Linda and Jerry Dossey of Tecumseh and Charla and Randy Biggs of Guthrie; three stepdaughters, three stepsons; one brother and sister-in-law, Billy and Betty Dyer of Bradenton, Fla.; sister-in-law Ida Dyer of Titusville, Fla.; seven grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews and her Oak Park Family.
Services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Smith Funeral Chapel with Rev. Paul Box and Minister Tracy Scheer of the First Southern Baptist Church officiating. Burial will be at Jones Cemetery.
Irene (Trammell) Lyon
Irene (Trammell) Lyon died Thursday in Anchorage, Alaska. She was 87.
She was born July 11, 1911, in Kirbyville, Mo., to James Henry and Ethel Caroline (Parnell) Trammell. She has been a resident of Anchorage since 1997, moving from Seminole. She previously lived in Mineral Wells, Texas, and McLeansboro, Ill. She was a retired school teacher and of the Baptist faith.
She married Robert Donald Lyon on Feb. 17, 1933, and he preceded her in death on Oct. 23, 1980.
She also was preceded in death by her parents, and one brother, Albert Trammell.
Surviving are a daughter, Nancy Wood of Anchorage, Alaska; one granddaughter, Lee Anne Wood, Fairbanks, Alaska; two brothers, J.H. Trammell of Ada and Bill Trammel of Oklahoma City; four sisters, Berneice Dinius of Prague, Beatrice Gutierrez of Taos, N.M., Loydale Treat of Wenaatche, Wa., and Kay Gibson of Nebraska.
Graveside services will be 2 p.m. Friday at Prague Cemetery with Rusty Dawson officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of Parks Brothers Funeral Home in Prague.
John Herman Ertel
John Herman Ertel of Harrah died Monday. He was 79.
He was born Feb. 17, 1920, in Wellston, Okla., to Gotlieb and Gertie (Gordell) Ertel. In 1928, his dad built a house on Holden Street, where Ertel lived until his death.
He married Jaunita Louise DuBoise in 1941 and was the mayor of Harrah from 1945 to 1953. While serving as mayor, he helped establish 18 street lights, built a bridge on what is now Tim Holt Drive and the drainage dip on Main St. His main occupation was farming, but he also hauled dirt, sand and gravel and did tractor work. He was a bus driver for the Harrah Schools for 21 years and was a janitor. While his wife was alive, they belonged to the Rodeo Club and helped with many rodeos and parades in Harrah. He attended the Church of Christ. His wife preceded him in death in 1988 and his brother Edward.
He is survived by his daughter, Mikki; and his son, Jon "Culley"; two sisters, Marie Gough of McLoud; Edna Cuttreal of Perry; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Services will be 2 p.m. Thursday at the Harrah Church of Christ. Burial will be at Dale Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Asa Smith Funeral Service.
Louella Thomas
Louella Thomas, 84, Louisville, Ky., died Sunday.
She was born in Snyder on Sept. 4, 1914, to Paschall and Georgia Della (Watts) Davis. She lived in Seminole for 50 years, working as a teacher. She was named Teacher of the Year in 1976. She began her career in Carr City Schools. She was a member of the First Baptist Church, Delta Kappa Gamma, Beta Sigma Phi and a former member of the Chamber of Commerce.
She was preceded in death by her parents; son, Tommy Thomas; former husband, Vernon Thomas; twin sister, Della Brooking.
She is survived by son, Robert R. Stephens, Peoria, Ill.; daughter, Debbie T. Wesslund, Louisville, Ky.; two brothers, Kelly Davis, Vernon, Texas, and Dick Davis, Bryson, Texas; sister Dorothy Hinton, Columbus, Miss.; and five grandchildren.
Services will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Swearingen Funeral Home Chapel, Seminole, with Dr. Kelvin Moseley officiating. Burial will be in Maple Grove Cemetery.
Shelby W. Kilcrease
Shelby W. "Wayne" Kilcrease, 67, Velma, died Monday in Oklahoma City.
He was born in Duncan on June 19, 1931, to Shelby and Mattie May (David) Kilcrease. He was a painter, and he retired five years ago. He served in the U.S. Army and was a member of County Line Baptist Church.
Preceding him in death were his parents, three sisters and two brothers.
Survivors include the mother of his children, Sherry Kilcrease; two sons and daughters-in-law, Gary and Susie (Sullivan) Kilcrease, Velma, and Lee and Teresa Kilcrease, Denver, Col.; daughter Terri Drye, Oklahoma City; sister and brother-in-law, Naomi and Roy Riddle, Cottonwood, Ariz.; and seven grandchildren Craig, Jay, Flint, Jessica and Bryan Kilcrease, Rodney Drye and Misty Mathis.
Viewing will be at Newport Cemetery, west of Ardmore, from 2 p.m. until the graveside service is held at 2:30 p.m. Thursday. The Rev. Billy Ward will officiate. Arrangements are under the direction of Swearingen Funeral Home, Seminole.
Glenda Charline Alsip
Glenda Charlene (Ingersol) Alsip, 41, died Monday in Shawnee.
She was born Aug. 8, 1957, in Harrison, Ark., to Charles F. and Florene (Mead) Ingersol. She married Dean Alsip on Aug. 17, 1973, in Stillwater. She graduated from Ripley High School in 1975 and attended Claremore Junior College and Langston College, as well as Meridian Vocational-Technical School, where she received a certificate in autocad drafting. She worked for Fractionation Research, Inc., and owned Tan and Trim of Stillwater.
She became an assistant administrator at Rosewood Care Center and a licensed administrator in 1996. She was transfered to Shawnee's Colonial Estates Nursing Home in December 1998. She was a member of Mehan Union Church and Eagles Lodge of Stillwater.
She was preceded in death by both grandfathers and her father.
She is survived by two daughters and a son-in-law, Brandi Lynn and Ricky Brunt, Ripley, Okla., and Chandi Rene Alsip, Stillwater; four grandchildren, Jade, Porscha, Skyler and Brooke Brunt, Ripley, Okla.; three sisters and brothers-in-law, Brenda A. and Jim Dale, Stillwater, Claudette and Ronnie Hixon, Cushing, and Melanie Faye and Gary Fielding, Stillwater; maternal grandmother Minnie Anderson, Stillwater; paternal grandmother Evelyn "Who-Who" Wright, Stillwater; uncle, Clay Plymate, Perkins; and many other relatives.
Services will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Mehan Union Church, with the Rev. Larry Eslinger and David Blose officiating. Burial will be in Ingalls Cemetery, Payne County. Arrangements are under the direction of Strode Funeral Home.
Marie Virginia Jarvis
Marie Virginia Jarvis died Friday in Shawnee. She was 95.
She was born March 16, 1905, in Shawnee. She was the daughter of Fred M. and Sada Marie (Robertson) Mathis.
Mrs. Jarvis was a resident of Sterling House in Shawnee for the last four years. As a child, she moved to Los Angeles, Calif., in 1912 and graduated from Jefferson High School in 1923.
She worked for the Los Angeles Telephone Co. until her marriage to Ruby Lee Jarvis July 5, 1925, in Los Angeles. They returned home in 1938 and established a permanent home on the Jarvis Homestead in Seminole County.
She was a member of the Thompson Heights Church of Christ in Shawnee and the Prairie Valley Extension Homemakers Club for more than 54 years. Mrs. Jarvis wrote articles for local newspapers for more than 50 years.
After the death of her husband, she lived in Choctaw until returning to Shawnee.
She was preceded in death by her parents; one sister, Myrle Beth Chandler in 1994; husband, Ruby on Dec. 7, 1993; son, Lee Edward Jarvis, who was killed in action in Germany during World War II; and grandson, Terry David Mabry, who was killed in Okinawa in 1976 while serving in the U.S. Navy.
Survivors include her two daughters and one son-in-law, Joan Mabry, Melbourne, Ark., and Jerry and James Clark, Choctaw; seven grandsons and six granddaughters-in-law, Rex and Becky Clark, Max and Cathy Clark, Monty and Terri Clark, Robbie and Joyce Mabry, John and Sue Mabry, Sandy and Evon Mabry and Patrick Mabry; two granddaughters and one grandson-in-law, Cheryl Ann and Robert Burke and Sherry Marcia Mabry; 15 great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren.
Services will be 1 p.m. Saturday at the Parks Brothers Funeral Home Chapel in Prague with Ray Newell officiating. Burial will follow in the Little Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 11 a.m. Saturday until service time at the Parks Brothers Funeral Home in Prague.
Dorthea A. Strotkamp
Dorthea A. "Dot" Strotkamp of Burns died Thursday. She was 66.
She was born March 2, 1934, at Bartlesville, the daughter of Otis and Helen (Hart) Holtsclaw. On June 9, 1952, she was married to Glen Strotkamp at Burns and they moved to Burns in 1954 from Shawnee.
She had worked at both Gibson's and as a teller at the Burns State Bank. She was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church in Florence and the 20th Century Club.
She was preceded in death by her parents and two sisters, Marjorie Brakebill and Claudine Bidwell.
Survivors include husband, Glen of the home; two sons, Audie L. Strotkamp, Peabody; Charles J. Strotkamp, Newton; a daughter, Patricia Wedel, Newton; one brother, Jack Holtsclaw, North Carolina; two sisters, Ruth McGuffee, Midwest City; Jenny Johnson, Texas and seven grandchildren.
Services will be 10 a.m. Monday at the Holy Family Catholic Church in Florence, Kan. Burial will follow in Burns Catholic Cemetery, El Dorado, Kan.
Memorials in her memory for Kansas Wildlife of the Burns Catholic Cemetery Fund may be left at Carlson Funeral Home, El Dorado, which is in charge of the services.
Carleen Ging Hoover
Carleen Ging Hoover of Shawnee died Thursday at an Oklahoma City hospital. She was 54.
She was born Nov. 21, 1945, in Anthony, Kan. She was the daughter of Rev. Herman and Dorothy Ging.
She graduated from Ada High School in 1964. Mrs. Hoover was a youth guidance specialist at Central Oklahoma Juvenile Treatment Center in Tecumseh.
She was a carrier for The Oklahoman for 10 years.
She was preceded in death by her father, the Rev. Herman Ging.
Survivors include daughter and son-in-law, Celeste and Tim Dibler, Ada; son, Che Hoover, Nevada; mother, Dorothy Sing, Sapulpa; three grandchildren, Drew, Kelsey and Trace Dibler, Ada; two sisters, Rachel Ging of Claremore and Marsha Ozbirn of Sand Springs; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts and uncles.
A memorial service will be 3 p.m. Saturday at Wesley United Methodist Church with the Rev. Rusty Williams assisted by Dr. Virginia Gray and Dr. Emma Richardson officiating, under the direction of Roesch-Walker Funeral Chapel.
Ruby A. Ambler
Ruby A. Ambler died Friday in Shawnee. She was 68.
She was born Feb. 28, 1932, in Egar, Ariz. She was the daughter of John Funnel and Sara Duffy.
She lived in the Chandler area for many years. She married Lester K. Ambler Oct. 9, 1951, in Chandler. He preceded her in death in 1992.
She also was preceded in death by her parents, two sons and two sisters.
Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law, John and Melissa Ambler, Meeker; daughter, Georgia Snodgrass, Pauls Valley; brothers, Eddie Barnes, Fred Barnes and Bill Barnes; sisters, Rosie Underwood and Dicie Barnes; nine grandchildren; and other relatives and many friends.
Graveside services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at the Bethel-Greenwood Cemetery in Chandler under the direction of the Parks Brothers Funeral Home in Chandler.
George Henry Harjo
Stroud resident George Henry Harjo died Friday at Cushing Hospital in Cushing. He was 60.
He was born July 10, 1939, in Pawnee to Wilson Harjo and Josephine (Yarbrough) Harjo.
He was employed with Tohatchi, Inter-Mountain Boarding School, Concho Boarding School and the Seminole Nation. He retired in 1995.
Harjo graduated from Varnum High School and was active in powwow.
He was preceded in death by his father, Wilson Harjo; daughter, Waukomis Harjo; grandson, Dakota Pennock; and grandmother, Betsy Yarbrough.
Survivors include his mother, Josephine Harjo, Seminole; daughters, April Harjo, Seminole, and Debbie Harjo, Stroud; brothers, the Rev. Mike Harjo, Stanford Harjo and Mike Harjo II, all of Seminole, and Lucian Harjo, Shawnee; sisters, Mary Simmers, Bristow, and Delores Haynes, Deborah Pennock, Cindy Mitchell and Sherry Harjo, all of Seminole; grandchildren, Kevin Fields, Cassie Harjo, Dustin "Spud" Harjo, Kit Pennock, William Pennock and Acacia Harjo.
Services will be 2 p.m. Monday at Mekusukey Mission, Seminole, with the Rev. Mike Harjo and Ted Underwood officiating. Burial will be in the Lena Family Cemetery in Wewoka under the direction of Swearingen Funeral Home, Seminole. Harjo will be moved to Mekusukey Mission at 10 a.m. Monday.
