George Richard Sweetland
Longtime Shawnee resident George Richard Sweetland, 92, died Wednesday in Oklahoma City.
Services will be 3 p.m. Friday at Gaskill-Owens Funeral Chapel with Richard Sweetland officiating. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery.
Sweetland was born Jan. 8, 1907, in Georgia to Fred and Lena Leota (Flemming) Sweetland. He married Odessa Amelia Sweetland on March 4, 1946, in Lawton.
He attended the University of Oklahoma and studied pre-law in the late 1920s. He served in the U.S. Army in 1944 and 1945. He retired from a career in sales.
Sweetland was involved with the American Association for the Blind and the Handicapped for Christ organization of Shawnee.
Survivors include his son, Richard C. Sweetland, Kansas City, Kan.; four daughters, Annette Sweetland, Bethany; Darlene Watson, Edinboro, Pa.; Amelia Rose Long, Willston, N.D.; Sylvia Ann Sweetland, Okarche; seven grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
Preceding him in death are his wife on Nov. 30, 1998; one sister; one grandson; one great-grandchild.
The family has designated Hospice as appropriate for memorials.
Hester L. Yadon
Former Okemah resident Hester L. "Sis" Yadon died Tuesday in Duncan. She was 78.
Services will be 2:30 p.m. Thursday at the Parks Brothers Funeral Home Chapel, Okemah, with the Rev. Carl Clay officiating. Burial will be in the Highland Cemetery.
Mrs. Yadon was born Jan. 1, 1921, in Okemah to John David Wood and Bessie M. Ham. She married Jesse Allen Yadon Oct. 1, 1938, in Okemah.
She graduated from Okemah High school and was a homemaker. She was a member of the Calvary Baptist Church in Okemah and the Order of the Eastern Star. She moved to Duncan in 1992.
Survivors include her son, Bill and Kaye Yadon, Velma; brother, Delbert Wood, Abilene, Texas; five grandchildren, Stephanie and Kelli Cole, Bridge City, Texas; Todd and Amy Yadon, Duncan; Tara Yadon, Velma; Craig Yadon, Edmond; Debra and David Rising, Oklahoma; three great-grandchildren, Zachary Cole and Bradley and Jose Rising.
She was preceded in death by her husband, on April 28, 1991; her parents; one son, David Allen Yadon; and one brother, Pete Wood.
Anna Mae Ashley
Anna Mae Ashley, 82, died Wednesday in McAlester.
She was born April 10, 1916, near Davenport to Benjamin D. and Amelia B. (Martie) Winkleman. She married Ora Marshell Ashley in Chandler on March 16, 1931.
She worked at Tinker Air Force Base as a civil service employee, retiring several years ago. She moved from Lincoln County to McAlester to be with her children.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, a grandson, and a son-in-law.
She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Bill and Marie Ashley, McAlester; three daughters and two sons-in-law, Alta Sue and Joe Averty, Tuttle; Norma and Len Brightly, Tucson, Ariz.; and Naomi Springs, McAlester; eight grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; brother Charles Winkleman, Segin, Texas; two sisters, Edda Castleberry, Davenport, and Jean Coleman, Midwest City; and other relatives and friends.
Services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at Parks Brothers Funeral Chapel, Chandler, with the Rev. Doyle Seeley officiating. Burial will be in Oak Park Cemetery, Chandler.
Nadine Chronister
Nadine Chronister, Shawnee, died Sunday in a local hospital. She was 45.
Services will be 2 p.m. Friday at Resthaven Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Clint Dawkins officiating. Burial will be at Resthaven Memorial Park.
She was born March 31, 1953, in Olton, Texas, to Erven and Martha Caskey. She married David Chronister in Littlefield, Texas, on Jan. 7, 1980, and was a homemaker.
She moved to the Shawnee area in 1991 and was a member of Sharon Baptist Church.
Preceding her in death were her mother, Martha Faye Caskey; sister, Norma Jean, and grandparents, R.G. and Lucille Parker.
Survivors include her father and stepmother, Erven and Geneva Caskey, Shawnee; husband, David Chronister, Shawnee; daughters, Kathy Chronister, Kimberly Chronister, both of Denver, Colo.; Valerie Chronister, Shawnee; brother, Reggie Wood, Shawnee; sisters, Jackie Vanderburg, Garland, Texas; Jan Hinesley, Tecumseh, and mother-in-law, Marymae Chronister, Littlefield, Texas.
Jeremiah Wayne Johnson
Jeremiah Wayne Johnson, Del City, died Tuesday at an area hospital. He was an infant.
Graveside services
will be 1 p.m. Friday at Arlington Memory Gardens under the direction of Bill Eisenhour Funeral Home, Del City.
Survivors include his parents, Keith Johnson and Melissa Mizzelle, Del City; brother, Daniel Nutt, Shawnee; grandparents, Barbara and Natt Dickens, Shawnee; Jerry and Calvin Beames, Kingston, Okla.; great-grandparents, Jessie and Hilda Hamilton, Del City; Howard and Joan Keel, Meeker; and several other relatives.
He was preceded in death by his great-grandparents, Harry and Gladys Mizzelle and Louista Richey.
Earl M. Gibson
Earl M. Gibson, 72, Shawnee, died Wednesday at a local nursing home.
He was born Dec. 22, 1926, in Sadie, Okla., and had served in the armed forces. He participated in Salvation Army ministries.
Preceding him in death were his father, Tobie Gibson, and mother, Clara Gibson.
Surviving are his sons and daughters-in-law, Steve and Diane Gibson, Leslie and Cindy Gibson; four grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Memorial service will be 2 p.m. Friday at Sallisaw Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Demuth Funeral Home of Oklahoma City.
Loyde Joe Ingram
Loyde Joe Ingram, 71, died Monday at his home in Holdenville.
He was born March 24, 1927, in Seminole to Claude and Mary Thomas Ingram.
At the age of 12 he moved to Holdenville, where he resided until his death. He was a Navy veteran of World War II and married Wilma Ruth Martin on July 1, 1950.
He worked in the oil field, was plant manager of Covey's and was a farmer and cattleman. He was preceded in death by his father, Claude Ingram; mother, Mary Thomas Ingram Palmer; stepfather, Arnold Palmer; sister, Wanda Blevins, and brother, Bill Ingram.
Surviving are his wife, Wilma Ruth Ingram, Holdenville; son and daughter-in-law, Randy and Karen Ingram, Clarksville, Tenn.; daughter and son-in-law, Susan and Bob Terry, Meeker; son, Bruce Ingram, Oklahoma City; grandchildren, Robert and Jennifer Ingram, Holdenville; Charles Ingram, Clarksville, Tenn.; Heather Ingram, Houston, Texas; two great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Geraldine Ingram, Holdenville, and many other relatives.
Memorial service will be 1:30 p.m. today at East Main Church of Christ in Holdenville.
Edna Yahola
Edna Yahola died Sunday in an Okemah hospital at the age of 96.
Wake will be 7 p.m. today at High Spring Indian Baptist Church. Services will be 2 p.m. Thursday at the church with Wayne Harjo, George Doyle and Felix Tiger officiating. Burial will be at the Yahola family cemeteryunder the direction of Parks Brothers Funeral Home of Okemah.
She was born Sept. 2, 1902, in Schulter, the daughter of March Monday and Lizie London-Randall Monday. She belonged to the Bear Clan and was Seminole and Creek.
At age 8, upon the death of her mother, she went to live with Albert and Yarna Burgess and attended Nuyaka Mission boarding school. She later attended Dwight Mission and played basketball and the piano. She also attended Haskell Indian School in Lawrence, Kan.
On Aug. 24, 1920, she married Willie E. Yahola in Okmulgee and they lived the rest of their lives at Okemah. He preceded her in death in 1973 after 53 years of marriage.
Mrs. Yahola was a homemaker and was the oldest member of High Spring Indian Baptist Church, where she served as secretary, Women's Missionary Union treasurer, Sunday school teacher and delegate to Muskogee, Seminole and Wichita Indian Baptist Association.
She frequently taught about her cultural heritage and wrote in the Creek language for ministers who couldn't read English.
Also preceding her in death were two daughters, Berdina Minnie Yahola, Elizabeth Yahola; two brothers, Jackson Lewis Monday, Martin Monday, and sister, Annie Monday Tiger.
Survivors include one son, Raymond Ellis Yahola, Oklahoma City; four daughters, LaDonna Yahola-Sharp, Okemah; Lowena Yahola-Birdsong, Dallas, Texas; Novena Yahola, Irving, Texas; Madelina Yahola-Seago, Carrollton, Texas; 11 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren and six great-great-grandchildren.
John Peter Schmidt
John Peter Schmidt died Monday at the age of 71.
Services will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Highland Cemetery gazebo with the Father Neal E. Brogan officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of Parks Brothers Funeral Home of Okemah.
One of 16 children of Michael and Elizabeth Whalen Schmidt, he was born March 7, 1927, in Bronx, N.Y. He married Francine Quintal on Feb. 28, 1968. He served in the U.S. Army and had been a resident of Okfuskee County for 21 years. He was Catholic.
His parents preceded him in death.
Survivors include his wife, Francine Schmidt, of the home in Okemah; daughter and son-in-law, Gina M. and Michael Cummins, Sapulpa, and several brothers and sisters.
Ila M. Swanner
Ila M. Swanner, 94, Shawnee, died Tuesday in a local nursing home.
Services will be 10 a.m. Thursday at Resthaven Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Dwyane Dennis officiating. Burial will be at Resthaven Memorial Park.
She was born Oct. 23, 1904, in Arlington, Texas, the son of Joseph Henry and Nina Mae (Arney) Ward. She married Ruben Oscar Swanner in Stevenville, Texas, on April 1, 1922.
She moved to Oklahoma in 1927 and to Shawnee in 1942. She was a member of Central Church of Christ and had been a nurse at Shawnee City Hospital.
Preceding her in death were her parents, her husband and four sons, Oscar C. Swanner, John A. Swanner, C.S. Swanner and James W. Swanner.
Surviving are her daughters, Dorothy M. Rivera, Peoria, Ariz.; Ila G. Lofties, Shawnee; Betty J. Killgore, Bethany; Dorris L. Finkelman, Lodi, Calif.; son, Donald R. Swanner, Houston, Texas; 27 grandchildren, 44 great-grandchildren, 29 great-great-grandchildren and many other relatives.
Dunklin Jennings Palmer
Dunklin Jennings Palmer died Monday. He was 64.
He was born in Searcy, Ark., on Aug. 20, 1934, to Elvin H. Palmer and Emma Watson Palmer.
He was a member of the protestant faith, and worked as a mechanic at Small Engine.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers Gus Palmer and E.H. Palmer Jr.; sisters, Vera Reaves and Ramona Palmer.
Survivors include a brother, Lewis N. Palmer of Searcy; three nephews, three nieces, six great-nephews and five great-nieces.
Services are 2 p.m. Wednesday at Roller-Daniel Chapel, Searcy, Ark. Burial is at Rose Hill Cemetery, Tulsa. Memorials may be made to the American Diabetes Foundation.
Sylvia Irene Huckabay
Sylvia Irene Huckabay died Saturday at a local hospital. She was 83.
She was born Nov. 27, 1915, in Leach, the daughter of Monroe and Bessie (Hoopingarner) Lovett. She later married J.B. Huckabay.
Mrs. Huckabay was retired from the Shawnee Care Center and was a member of Hart Street Full Gospel Church. She had lived in Shawnee for the past 60 years.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband and two siblings.
Survivors include four sons, Franklin Huckabay, Gore; Louis Huckabay, Wayne; Bill Huckabay, Shawnee; and Johnny Huckabay, Shawnee; one daughter, Patricia Walker, Oklahoma City; one foster son, Lee Deal, Holdenville; and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Private services were held Monday at the Hart Street Full Gospel Church. Pastor Ellis Gregg officiated. Burial was held at Neal Cemetery under the direction of Roesch-Walker Funeral Chapel.
Memorials may be made to The Hart Street Full Gospel Church.
