Murlie Castoe-Ward
Shawnee resident Murlie Castoe-Ward died Monday in Norman. She was 74.
Mrs. Castoe-Ward was born March 5, 1926, in Brooken.
She worked as a teacher's aide, and was of an inter-denominational faith.
She was preceded in death by two husbands, Homer Castoe, in 1975, Orville Ward, in 1997; and a sister.
Survivors include her mother, Vena Cheek, Okemah; five sons, Sam Baker, Amber; Homer Castoe Jr., Seminole; David Castoe and Mike Castoe, both of Shawnee; James Castoe, Van Nuys, Calif.; eight daughters, Betty Shufeldt, Copeville, Texas; Lou Costillo, Dallas, Texas; Barbara Warrior, Stroud; Marion Poundstone, Reno, Nev.; Liz Castoe, Sarasota, Fla.; Hazel McDaniel, Norman; Diana Wyatt, Waskum, Texas; Wanda Morgan, Shreveport, La.; two brothers, Bill Ferrell, Whitefield; Otho Steele; 28 grandchildren; and 46 great-grandchildren.
Viewing will be from 1 p.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday, and from 8 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. Thursday.
Services will be 11 a.m. Thursday, at Parks Brothers Funeral Home Chapel in Prague. Burial will be in Czech Cemetery.
Robert Cleo Brannon
Earlsboro resident Robert Cleo Brannon died Monday in a local hospital. He was 83.
Services are pending under the direction of Swearingen Funeral Home in Seminole.
Danny Ray Hopkins
Danny Ray Hopkins died Saturday in Wellston. He was 38.
He was born Aug. 17, 1961, in Muskogee. He was the son of R. Lloyd and Peggy (Hurst) Hopkins.
He attended school in Medford and graduated from Joel E. Farris High School in Spokane, Wash. He graduated from Gonzaga University.
He also served in the U.S. Air Force.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Ray and Elva Hurst and Robert and Katherine Hopkins; and two uncles, R.J. Hurst and Bily Gene Hurst.
Survivors include his parents, Lloyd and Peggy Hopkins, Chandler; one son, Aaron Lloyd Hopkins, Oklahoma City; one brother and his family, Mark and Elizabeth Hopkins and daughter, Samantha, of Houston, Texas; two uncles, Bobby Hurst, Warwick; Don Hurst, Shawnee; and two aunts, Marie Kambel, Slidell, La.; and Bonnie Rattray, Tulsa.
Services will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Parks Brothers Funeral Home in Chandler. Burial will follow in the Oak Park Cemetery under the direction of Parks Brothers Funeral Home in Chandler.
Haven L. Taylor
Shawnee resident Haven L. Taylor died Sunday in a local hospital. He was 51.
Taylor was born Jan. 17, 1949, in Shawnee, to Alex Taylor and Martha Qualls.
He attended elementary school in Shawnee, and attended high school in Tulsa.
He worked as a truck driver, and in many other jobs in the area.
Taylor joined the U.S. Army on April 15, 1968, and served in Vietnam. He received the Vietnam Campaign Medal and two overseas service bars.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Survivors include his son, Jerry Taylor, Shawnee; sister, Mary Caswell, Oklahoma City; granddaughter, Lilly Taylor, Shawnee; a niece and two nephews.
Graveside services
will be 10 a.m. today, in Little Cemetery, with the Rev. DuWayne Colvin officiating. Services are under the direction of Gaskill-Owens Funeral Chapel of Shawnee.
Iola D. Allen
Iola D. Allen of Ada died Tuesday in Ada. She was 85.
She was born Feb. 1, 1915, in Vanoss to Wallace and Della Beller. She married B.E. Allen Feb. 20, 1934, in Purcell.
Mrs. Allen was a receptionist at Valley View Hospital for 26 years. She had lived in Byars and Galey and was a member of Galey Baptist Church.
Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law, Eddie and Wendy Allen, Ada; daughter and son-in-law, JoAnn and David Pando, Oklahoma City; sister, Tina Webb, Shawnee; brother and sister-in-law, Archie and Johnie Mae Beller, Stratford; five grandchildren and their spouses, Diane and Andy Johnson, Jeannie and Gary Hill, Michele and John David Hanson, Cody and Karin Allen, Eric Stone; five great-grandchildren, Brianna Kathelene, Autum Leigh, Lynsie Jo, Justin and Cole Allen; and one great-great-grandchild, Kirstyn Reed.
She was preceded in death by her husband Jan. 1, 1975.
Services will be 10:30 a.m. today at Pickard Funeral Home Chapel, Stratford, with the Rev. J.V. Lobaugh, the Rev. Archie Beller and the Rev. Don Ellis officiating. Burial will be at McGee Cemetery.
Norma Jean Nichols
Norma Jean Nichols of Norman died Tuesday in Norman. She was 69.
She was born Aug. 15, 1931, in Wellston. She was the daughter of Freeman R. and Vernal M. (Christy) Nelson.
Mrs. Nichols was a 1949 graduate of Shawnee High School. She was reared in Shawnee, and lived in West Memphis, Ark. for 11 years before moving to Norman 28 years ago.
In October of 1972, she married James A. Nichols in Shawnee. She was a housekeeping supervisor at Griffin Memorial Hospital, retiring in 1995. Mrs. Nichols previously had worked in housekeeping at Shawnee Regional Hospital.
She was preceded in death by her parents and two sisters, Verneta Hays and Veldean Grainger.
Survivors include her husband, James A. Nichols of the home; daughter, Dorothy Mae Null of Bartlett, Tenn.; grandchildren, Justin Keith Null and Angela Nicole Null, both of Bartlett, Tenn.; two sisters, Betty Cox of Granbury, Texas, and Barbara Martin of Tecumseh; two stepsons, Dannie Wade of Corinth, Texas, and Arthur Nichols of Dallas, Texas; stepgrandchild, Sha L. Wade of Oklahoma City.
Services will be 10 a.m. Friday at Cooper Funeral Chapel with Bob Anderson and Bill Roberts officiating. Burial will be at Tecumseh Cemetery.
Gail Rutter
Gail Irvin Rutter, Stroud, died Tuesday in Midwest City. He was 84.
Rutter was born Nov. 27, 1915, in Gueda Springs, Kan., to Benjamin Franklin and Elva (Leaf) Rutter. He married Dorothy Geneva Mapel in 1939 in Winfield, Kan.
Since 1981 he had lived in Stroud, where he was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Lions Club and Masonic Lodge No. 142 for more than 50 years.
He had worked as an engineer for Texaco Oil Co.
Survivors include his son, Gail Allan Rutter, Hong Kong, China; two daughters, Pat Johnson Chiassen, Houston, Texas; Peggy Gurley, Bristow; brother, Homer Rutter, Beaver, Ark.; sister, Maybelle Jones, Arkansas City, Kan.; 10 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and many other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Dorothy, in 1997, five brothers and one grandson.
Services will be 10 a.m. Friday at the First United Methodist Church, Stroud, with the Rev. Joe Molencupp officiating. Burial will be in Stroud Cemetery under the direction of Parks Brothers Funeral Home, Stroud.
Norma Campbell Benson
Norma Campbell Benson died in Tulsa. She was 73.
She was born Aug. 18, 1927, in Stratford to Joseph and Bessie Mae Fox Greenlee.
She married James V. "Baldy" Campbell in 1949 and they moved to Okemah. He preceded her in death. She later married Charles Benson. He also preceded her in death.
Survivors include a son, Harry Leon Howard, Phoenix, Ariz.; daughter, Ladonna Cox, McAlester; three brothers, James Vernon Greenlee, Wendell Greenlee and Raymond Greenlee, all of Oklahoma City; two sisters, Bernice Park and Deveta Greenlee, both of Oklahoma City; seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
She also was preceded in death by two sons, John Olen Benson and J.V. Benson Jr.
Services will be 2 p.m. today at Parks Brothers Funeral Home Chapel, Okemah. Burial will follow at Highland Cemetery gazebo with Olen Edwards officiating.
Anita June Reiter
Anita June Reiter of Moore died Wednesday. She was 38.
She was born to Fred and Ruby (Birdsong) Wiggins June 12, 1962, in Oklahoma City.
Survivors include one son, Stephen; one daughter, Christina; her parents, one brother, Jeff Wiggins; one sister, Freda Evans; three grandmothers, Bessie Wiggins, Susie Birdsong and Mildred Wiggins; numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and many other family members and friends.
Graveside services
will be 10 a.m. today at Memory Lane Cemetery in Harrah. Arrangements directed by Asa Smith Funeral Service.
