Lina Helen Hickman
Shawnee resident Lina Helen Hickman, formerly of the Toppers area east of Wagoner, died July 13 in Shawnee following a lengthy illness. She was 80.
She was born to James Floyd and Cyntha Ann Paden Jones on Jan. 6, 1918, on the farm near Hobart. She married Robert LeRoy Hickman on Sept. 10, 1940, in Albuquerque, N.M., and they were married for more than 55 years before his death.
Mrs. Hickman was an employee of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers for 20 years, retiring in 1974. She was a member of Maple Park Christian Church, Sunshine Club, Toppers East in the Wagoner area.
Also preceding her in death were her parents, one brother and one step-grandson.
Surviving are her stepson, Robert Lynn Hickman, Delta, Colo.; Leona Mae Hodges, Wichita, Kan.; brothers, Glen Jones, Fall River Mills, Calif.; Carl "Buck" Jones, Bouse, Ariz.; O.O. "Dub" Jones, Thousand Oaks, Calif.; sister, Leona Vaughn, Guthrie; three step-grandchildren, five step-great-grandchildren and many other relatives.
Graveside service was held Thursday at Pioneer Cemetery in Wagoner with the Rev. Duane Cowen officiating. Arrangements were under the direction of Shipman Funeral Home in Wagoner. Memorials may be made to Hospice of Shawnee, 1102 W. MacArthur, Shawnee OK 74804.
Sadie Kyle Purcell Evans
Retired organist Sadie Kyle Purcell Evans of Edmond died Monday at the age of 86.
Memorial service will be 2:30 p.m. Wednesday at First Christian Church, Stroud, with the Rev. Ronald Allton officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of Parks Brothers Funeral Home of Stroud.
Sadie Kyle Purcell Evans was born March 30, 1912, in Kansas City, Mo., the daughter of Thomas Q. and Mabel Claire (Glenn) Purcell. She married David L. Evans on May 23, 1933, in Guthrie and he preceded her in death in 1994.
She graduated from Sherwood School of Music, New York; Stephen College, Columbia, Mo., and American Guild of Organists. She was a retired music teacher and church organist. She was a member of First Christian Church and Order of the Eastern Star, Stroud.
Her parents also preceded her in death.
Surviving are her sons and daughters-in-law, Larry and Carolyn Evans, Oklahoma City; the Rev. David and Ann Evans, Tulsa, six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Daisy Hamilton
Daisy Hamilton died Monday at her Okemah residence. She was 80.
She was born Sept. 23, 1917, in Okemah, the daughter of Herman Joseph Wilson and Lucinda Jane (Lambeth) Wilson. She married Garrett Berlin Hamilton Jan. 9, 1959, and he preceded her in death in 1979.
She moved to Seminole in 1959 and returned to Okemah in 1982. She was a member of Seminole Rebekah Lodge and Tecumseh Order of the Eastern Star. She was a homemaker and craftsmaker.
Surviving are her son, J. Wells, Dewar; daughters, Carrie Mae Harrison, Fairview; Louise Green, Shawnee; sister, Gertrude Glasgow, Okemah; eight grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and six great-great-grandchildren.
Services will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at Pentecostal Holiness Church with the Rev. Betty Wideman officiating, assisted by the Rev. Paul Custar. Burial will be in Little Cemetery under the direction of Parks Brothers Funeral Home of Okemah.
Beulah B. Chase
Longtime Seminole resident Beulah B. Chase of Shawnee died Sunday in a local nursing home. She was 82.
She was born Aug. 5, 1915, in Coweta to William Peter and Bessie (Smith) Horn. She attended Seminole High School and lived most of her life in Seminole. She married Virgil R. Chase on May 14, 1936, in Gainesville, Texas.
She was a member of First Baptist Church in Seminole and had moved to Shawnee eight years ago.
Preceding her in death were her daughter, Sandra Snider, and two brothers, George Horn and Jim Horn.
Survivors include two daughters, Lee Hood, Norman; Vicki Shook, Irving, Texas; son-in-law, Gary Snider, Edina, Minn.; six granddaughters; two great-granddaughters; brother and sister-in-law, Haskell "Hack" and Ruth Horn, Shawnee; sisters-in-law, Betty Horn, Seminole; Leta Horn, Glendale, Calif., and many other relatives.
Graveside service will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at Fairview Cemetery with the Rev. Bill Matthews and Phil Thompson officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of Roesch-Walker Funeral Chapel.
Lilburn C. Qualls
Lifelong Seminole area resident Lilburn C. Qualls of Earlsboro died Sunday in a Seminole hospital at the age of 62.
He was born July 16, 1936, in Prague to Edgar T. and Beulah (Rowland) Qualls. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War and retired from Tinker Air Force Base in 1993 ofter 27 years of service.
Preceding him in death were his mother and his twin brother, Wilburn Qualls.
He is survived by his father, Edgar T. Qualls, Little; three brothers, Paul Qualls, Oklahoma City; Roy Qualls, Waco, Texas; Jackie Qualls, Wewoka; three sisters, Louise Qualls, Millie Aldridge, both of Little; Karen King, Bowlegs; nephew, David Ingalls, Earlsboro, and many other relatives.
Services will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at Swearingen Funeral Chapel, Seminole, with burial in Little Cemetery.
Catherine Caldwell Carlin
Catherine Caldwell Carlin of Lakewood, Colo., died Saturday in a Wheat Ridge, Colo., care center. She was 80.
She was born Aug. 11, 1918, in Paisley, Scotland. She had been a secretary in college administration and was a member of the First Church of Christian Science at Arvada and the mother church of Christian Science in Boston, Mass.
Her husband, Wesley Carlin, preceded her in death in 1992.
Surviving are her sons and daughters-in-law, Mark and Terri Carlin, Morrison, Colo.; Bruce and Sue, Macomb; Scott and Lynda, Ada; sister and brother-in-law, Rita and David Hendry, Boulder, Colo.; brothers and sisters-in-law, Bill and Bea Thorpe, West Hartford, Conn.; Hal and Peggy Caldwell, Connecticut; Tom Caldwell, Connecticut; six grandchildren, two great-grandchildren and many other relatives.
Memorial service will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Aspen Mortuaries Lakewood Chapel in Colorado. Memorial contributions may be made to Wide Horizon Care Center, Wheat Ridge, Colo.
Gary Duane Kimer
Shawnee resident Gary Duane Kimer died Sunday at his home. He was 62.
Graveside services will be noon Wednesday at Fairview Cemetery with Dwayne Dennis officiating, under the direction of Roesch-Walker Funeral Chapel.
Kimer was born Sept. 28, 1935, in Shawnee, to Leon and Flora (Morrow) Kimer. He graduated from Shawnee High School and served in the U.S. Air Force from February 1953 to February 1957. He married Nancy Dunavan at Tecumseh in 1956.
He was employed at Tinker Air Force Base for 33 years and was a member of the Central Church of Christ.
Survivors include his wife, Nancy of the home; two children and their spouses, Steve and Valerie Kimer of Shawnee, Lisa and John Webb of McLoud; a brother and sister-in-law, Allen M. and Wanda Kimer of Macomb; his mother-in-law, Rachel Dunavan of Shawnee; and a grandson.
William Thomas Higdon
William "Bill" Thomas Higdon, 95, Seminole, died Monday at Seminole Medical Center.
Services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Swearingen Funeral Home Chapel, Seminole, with Chris Stinnett officiating. Burial will be in Maple Grove Cemetery.
He was born March 25, 1903, in Texas to Martin Wesley and Lula (Sewell) Higdon. He moved to Seminole at the age of 3. He was an oilfield worker for several local companies until his retirement in 1965. After retirement, he was a construction worker. He was a member of the Park and Seminole Church of Christ.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Alice May Higdon, on Aug. 19, 1986, and son J.D. Higdon in 1971.
He is survived by a son, Billy Joe Higdon, Seminole; daughter Margie Lovelace, Robbs, N.M.; two sisters, Irene Hall, McLoud, and Jeanette Garner, Del City; five grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
Sue Marie Hendricks
Sue Marie Hendricks, 87, formerly of Shawnee, died recently in Seattle, Wash., where she had resided since April.
She was born in Shawnee to John and Maude Goodpasture and graduated from Shawnee High School in 1928. She was employed by Beneficial Finance Corp., and transferred to Muskogee where, in 1936, she became the company's first female manager in the United States.
She married Harry Hendricks in 1945 and lived in Oklahoma City until moving to McAllen, Texas, in 1981. She was a founding member of the Trinity Methodist Church in McAllen, the sixth person to sign the charter.
She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Stephen and Kindie, Seattle, Wash., and two nephews, Joe Chandler, San Jose, Calif., and Bob and Eileen Chandler, McAllen, Texas.
A memorial service was held Monday in Seattle. Memorial donations may be made to Trinity United Methodist Church, 1801 Trenton, McAllen TX 78501.
William E. Rogers
William E. Rogers, 79, Shawnee, died Sunday in a local nursing home.
He was born Sept. 10, 1918, in Wanette to A.K. and Emma (Powers) Rogers. He attended Tecumseh Schools and Neff's Business College.
He married Elza Mae Stephens on Dec. 26, 1940, in Chandler and was a salesperson for C&H Wholesale. He served in the U.S. Army from June 1940 to June 1945 and was a lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and Disabled American Veterans, as well as a past commander of the VFW.
He was also a member of the Highland Church of Christ, Tecumseh.
He is survived by his wife, of the home; three daughters and sons-in-law, Jean and Boyd Pylant, Canadian; Sharon and Doug Gaines, Canadian; Sandra and Don Smithey, Shawnee; son William E. Rogers, Midwest City; eight grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; a brother and sister-in-law, Leonard and Eva Rogers, Shawnee; brother-in-law and sister-in-law Marvin and Margaret Stephens, Miami; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a great-granddaughter; a sister; and five brothers.
Services were held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Roesch-Walker Funeral Chapel, with Bob Anderson officiating. Burial was in Tecumseh Cemetery. Arrangements were under the direction of Roesch-Walker Funeral Chapel.
