Noel Ray James
Dewey resident Noel Ray James died Wednesday at the James family home in Dewey.
Graveside services
, including military rites, will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Resthaven Memorial Park Cemetery under the direction of The Arnold Moore-Dewey Funeral Service, Dewey, with the Rev. Ross Atkins officiating.
James was born Dec. 14, 1918, in Piedmont, Mo. to John William and Nellie Ethel (Luna) James. He moved to Chandler in 1926 where he graduated high school in 1937. He married Ellen Anna Meek on Dec. 24, 1942, in Chandler.
James received his bachelor of science degree from Central State University and earned his master's degree from Oklahoma State University. He also completed additional studies at Kansas University.
He was enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1940 and was assigned to the 45th Division. He served in Italy and France for two years and returned to teach school at Skiatook for one year. He also served two years in Korea with the 45th Division.
He returned to the teaching profession in the Vinita school system, where he taught for seven years. He later taught at Dewey in 1958. He became principal of the Dewey High School in 1969 and retired in 1979.
Survivors include his wife, Ellen Anna (Meek) James, of the home; two sons, John Ray and Darlene Kay James, Dewey; Robert Noel James, Dewey; one granddaughter, Samie Lynn James; brother, William N. James, Wellston; three sisters, Clara June Griggs, Bedford, Texas; Erma Mae Paschal, Britton, Okla.; Betty Ruth Musser, Wellston.
He was preceded in death by one brother, Elbert James; and three sisters, Mabel Hagen, Myrtle James and Lorene James.
Alice Jane Vickers
Former Seminole resident Alice Jane Vickers of Midwest City died Thursday in an Oklahoma City hospital. She was 74.
She was born April 2, 1924, in Bristow to H.L. Guthrie and Gertie (Atchison) Guthrie. She was valedictorian of her class at Capitol Hill High School. She married James M. "Jim" Vickers on June 1, 1942, in San Antonio, Texas, and he preceded her in death in 1970.
Mrs. Vickers worked in data services for Southwestern Bell Telephone for more than 38 years since World War II. She retired in 1983. She was a member of Telephone Pioneers and formerly a member of the Rebekah Lodge.
Also preceding her in death were her parents and two brothers.
Survivors include her daughter, Linda O'Brien, Midwest City; brothers, Raymond Guthrie, Seminole; Leroy Guthrie, California; grandchildren, Jay and Dena Smith, Norman; Jarrod and Susan O'Brien, Shawnee; Thomas O'Brien, Cordell, and two great-grandchildren.
Graveside service will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at Little Cemetery with Carol Walker officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of Swearingen Funeral Home, Seminole.
Annie Ford
Annie Ford, 98, of Porter died Thursday in a Muskogee hospital.
She was born Dec. 27, 1899, in Pope County, Ark., to John Green Chisum and Nancy Morris Chisum. She married William Huey Ford on March 19, 1919, at Russellville, Ark., and was a homemaker. She was Baptist.
Survivors include one son, John Ford, Okemah; two daughters, Parlee Henley, Oildale, Calif.; Frances Enox, Porter; sister, Josie Prince, Hector, Ark.; 20 grandchildren, 46 great-grandchildren and 15 great-great-grandchildren.
Preceding her in death were her husband and three sons, Wilburn Ford, George Ford and Ules Ford.
Services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at Parks Brothers Funeral Home Chapel in Okemah with the Rev. Billy Green officiating. Burial will be at Hillcrest Memorial Park in Bakersfield, Calif.
Sue Ann Farmer Malaske
Former Shawnee resident Sue Ann Farmer Malaske died Wednesday at her Midwest City home. She was 66.
She was born Jan. 3, 1932, in Oklahoma City to Archie Madison and Delilah Barbara (Genthe) Farmer. She attended school in Shawnee until 1948 and graduated in 1950 in Wheeler, Texas. She retired from Tinker Air Force Base where she was employed in accounting and finance.
She is survived by her daughter, Jan Weaver, Nicoma Park, and her brother, Frank Farmer, Peoria, Ariz.
She was preceded in death by her parents and a daughter.
Memorial service will be 2 p.m. today at Paylor Funeral Home Chapel, 412 N. Air Depot Blvd., Midwest City.
Lyle Daniel Simmons
Lyle Daniel Simmons, 80, Tecumseh, died Thursday in Midwest City.
He was born Aug. 1, 1917, in Verdon to Albert and Edna Cromley Simmons. He attended Hinton schools. He married Nadyne Mitchel Dutton on June 18, 1937, in Bonham, Texas.
He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and was awarded two Bronze Stars. He was reactivated and served as a trainer during the Koren conflict.
He was a sales representative until his retirement in 1982, a member of the First Presbyterian Church, Norman, a 32nd Degree Scottish Rite Mason, and a member of Midwest City Lodge No. 532.
He is survived by his wife, of the home; son Lyle Dean Simmons, Norman; daughter Julia Ann McCalmon, Norman; sister Shirley Whitmire, Weldon, Calif.; four grandchildren, Rebecca Lynn Albertson, Norman; David Brent McCalmon, Purcell; Jack Simmons McCalmon, Tulsa; and Brian Keith McCalmon, Washington; and three great-grandchildren.
Services will be held Monday in the Primrose Chapel, with Dr. Bob Rice officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of Primrose Funeral Service.
Bernice Miller
Bernice Miller, 62, Byars, died Thursday in Ada.
She was born May 26, 1935, in Atoka to Kitty and Elmer Bicknell.
She is survived by Otis Brock, of the home; four daughters and sons-in-law, Roseanne and Sonny Williams, Atoka; Linda and Junior Arrington, Stratford; Sharon and Tommy Davis, Byars; and Patricia and Barry Rogers, Durant; three sons and daughters-in-law, Rocky and Lynnie Miller, Tucson, Ariz.; James and Leann Miller, Colorado Springs, Colo.; and Charles and Crystal Miller, Stratford; one stepson and stepdaughter-in-law, Carol and Linda Brock, Byng; five brothers and sisters-in-law, George and Ellene Bicknell, Tushka; Roy and Almeta Bicknell and Buck Bicknell, Atoka; Lloyd and Sherri Crowder, Shawnee; and Walt D. Crowder; a sister and brother-in-law, Shirley and Tim Sexton, Tecumseh; 18 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by a son, Jackie Miller, and a great-grandchild, Leslie Lyda.
Services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Pickard Funeral Home Chapel, with the Rev. Mitch Williams officiating. Burial will be in Vamoosa Cemetery.
Steven Keith Weeks
Shawnee resident Steven Keith Weeks died Sunday in an Oklahoma City hospital at the age of 50.
Services will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Immanuel Baptist Church. The Rev. Dr. Jeff Moore and the Rev. Dr. Larry Adams will officiate. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery under the direction of Roesch-Walker Funeral Chapel. The casket will remain open at the funeral home until 9:30 a.m. Wednesday.
Weeks was born Jan. 2, 1948, in Poplar Bluff, Mo., the son of William H. and Laura Melvina Weeks. He graduated from Windsor (Mo.) High School and received an associate degree, with honors, in computer science from Seminole State College. He married Patricia Fruit in Shawnee on July 19, 1969.
Weeks retired as a petty officer first class from the U.S. Navy in 1979 and the family moved to Shawnee from Maryland. He was a computer programmer for the data services division of the Department of Human Services.
He was a member of Immanuel Baptist Church where he served as an usher and on the buildings and maintenance committee. He was a former Scout Master of Troop 407 at First Christian Church and a lifetime member of Disabled American Veterans.
Surviving are his wife, Pat Weeks, of the home in Shawnee; son and daughter-in-law, Brian and Laura Weeks, Norman; daughter, Christina Weeks, Seminole; mother and her husband, Melvina Weeks and Jack Morrison, West Plains, Mo.; mother-in-law, Violet Fruit, Shawnee; brother and sister-in-law, Bill and Mary Weeks, Shawnee; sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Vinita and Tommy Penuel, Shawnee, and many other relatives.
Preceding him in death were his father, William H. Weeks; his father-in-law, Lawrence D. Fruit, and his grandparents.
Memorials may be made to Immanuel Baptist Church building and maintenance fund or to Gideon International.
Andrew Julius Steffenson
Lincoln County homebuilder Andrew Julius Steffenson died Monday in Edmond at the age of 71.
He was born Feb. 21, 1927, at Goldfield, Iowa, to Andrew Martin and Myrtle Gray (Chapman) Steffenson.
He was a local homebuilder in Lincoln County for many years, past president of Lincoln County Homebuilders Association, member of the Wellston Chamber of Commerce and of Trinity Baptist Church in Wellston.
He had served eight years in the Iowa National Guard.
He was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers.
Surviving are his wife, Rosina Steffenson, of the home; son and daughter-in-law, Robert and Darla Steffenson, Wellston; Debra and Jimmie Christian, Meeker; brothers, Orville Steffenson, Gene Steffenson, both of Iowa; sisters, Mary Ann Lane, Betty Sumner, both of Iowa; Merylyn Tjelle, Missouri; five grandchildren, Jason and Jamie Christian, Kristin, Amy and Andrew Steffenson, and many other relatives.
Services will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Trinity Baptist Church in Wellston with the Rev. Lane Buckley officiating. Burial will be in Wellston Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Parks Brothers Funeral Home in Chandler, but viewing will be at Parks Brothers Chapel in Wellston.
