Virgil Opal Sesher
Virgil Opal Sesher died Monday in an Oklahoma City hospital. She was 85.
She was born Nov. 25, 1912, in Newnata, Ark., the daughter of Abe and Annie Cooper Gower. In 1939 she married James Clinton "Clint" Sesher and he preceded her in death in September 1967. She was a nurse in Oklahoma City and moved to Okfuskee County in 1969. She was a member of the Church of Christ.
Also preceding her in death were two brothers and two sisters.
Survivors include two sons, John Sesher, Norman and Ralph Sesher, Edmond; daughter, Rita Hoover, Oklahoma City; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Graveside service will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Highland Cemetery with Roger Thompson officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of Parks Brothers Funeral Home of Okemah.
Woodrow Thomas Anson, Jr.
Woodrow Thomas Anson, Jr., 61, Seminole, died Sunday at a local hospital.
He was born in Holdenville to Woodrow Thomas Sr., and Ella Irene Anson on Sept. 25, 1937. He married Mary Beatrice Roberts in Seminole on Jan. 14, 1956. He was self-employed and a member of First Baptist Church, Bowlegs.
He was preceded in death by his father in 1995 and his son, Anthony Gene "Tony" Anson in 1987.
Survivors include his mother, Seminole; his wife of the home; three sons, Gregory Thomas Anson, Seminole, James Kenneth Anson, Tecumseh, and Steven Randal Anson, Tecumseh; daughters Gidget Tilley, Seminole, and Connie Ann Robertson, Lawton; brothers David Harold Anson, Hartshorne, and Charles Lee Anson, Seminole; sisters Phyllis Barrett, Seminole, and Elizabeth Brooks, Wetumka; 11 grandchildren, and one great-grandchild.
Services will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at First Baptist Church, Bowlegs, with the Rev. Jason Yarbrough officiating. Burial will be in Rest Haven Memorial Gardens, Seminole. Arrangements are under the direction of Swearingen Funeral Home, Seminole.
Betty Jo Branscum
Betty Jo Branscum, 65, a lifelong resident of the Shawnee area, died Saturday at her home.
Services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Blackburn Chapel Baptist Church, with the Rev. Scott Bates officiating. Burial will be in Blackburn Chapel Cemetery.
She was born Jan. 13, 1933. She grew up in the Gaddy area and attended Valley Grove and Bethel Schools.
Prior to her retirement in 1980, she worked at the Sylvania plant and for Sears and Roebuck. She was a member of Blackburn Chapel Baptist Church, where she taught Sunday school and sang in the choir for many years.
She established two scholarships: one at the church to provide disadvantaged young people an opportunity to attend Falls Creek, and a music scholarship at Bethel Schools.
Memorials may be made to either scholarship fund.
She was preceded in death by her parents, H.L. and Bertha Carpenter; two brothers, Lee and Paul Carpenter; and five sisters, Clara Belle, Roberta, and Lovetta Carpenter, Grace Stone, and Letta Anne Akins.
Survivors include her husband, Clifton "Skip" Bransum, Bethel Acres; a daughter and son-in-law, Debra and Doug Jones, Claremore; two grandchildren, Joy and Andrew Jones, Claremore; two sisters and a brother-in-law, Oneda Cole, Shawnee, and Jackie and Bill Madole, Bethel Acres; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Orval and Lilian Carpenter, Afton, and Ira Ray and Una Carpenter, Shawnee; numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins; and many friends.
Arrangements are under the direction of Roesch-Walker Funeral Chapel.
Edward Ernest Gilbert
Edward Ernest Gilbert, 74, Wellston, died Thursday at an Oklahoma City hospital.
Services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Sunday at Wellston Baptist Church. Burial will be in Wellston Cemetery.
He is survived by his wife, Jewel (Huff) Gilbert, Wellston; a sister and brother-in-law, Lorene and Leroy Huff, Jenks; an uncle, George Washington, Shawnee; and several nieces, nephews, and other relatives.
He was preceded in death by a sister.
Arrangements are under the direction of Brown's Funeral Home, Luther.
Bross Robertson
Bross Robertson, 86, Seminole, died Friday at a Tulsa hospital.
He was born May 7, 1911, in Paint Rock, Ala., to John W. and Sarah (Reid) Robertson.
He moved to Oklahoma in 1914 and to Seminole in 1928. He worked for the Redco Company gasoline plant until his retirement. He was a member of the First Baptist Church.
He is survived by three sons, Jim Robertson and John Robertson, both of Seminole, and Tommy Robertson, Fredricksburg, Texas; four daughters, Vicki Armstrong, Sand Springs; Susan Bailey and Marsheila Cox, Norman; and Pat Friend, Wright City, Mo.; sister Rose Johnson, Duncan; seven grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife, Ora Marie (Quinalty) Robertson, on June 12, 1990.
Services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at Swearingen Funeral Chapel, Seminole, with Dr. Kelvin Moseley officiating. Burial will be in Little Cemetery.
Ann Hickman
Ann Hickman, 78, Shawnee, died Friday.
She was born Dec. 21, 1919, in Bowlegs to Bob and Mamie (Kelly) McCants. She graduated from Bowlegs High School and married Herschel Hickman in Holdenville on April 12, 1941.
She and her husband were ranchers in Macomb from 1941 to 1975, when they moved to Shawnee, where she was a homemaker.
She is survived by her husband, of the home; a daughter and son-in-law, Sue and Gary Cantrell, Shawnee, four sons and a daughter-in-law, Harold and Rita Hickman, Woodward; Gary Hickman, Tulsa; and Robert Hickman and Jay Hickman, both of Oklahoma City; sister Veva James, Calif.; eight grandchildren; five grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; four sisters, Molly McCants, Mary Folsom, Sadie Atlkinson, and Gertrude Gunther; and five brothers, Roy, Orville, Herschel, Marcy, and twin Dan McCants.
Services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at Liberty Baptist Church, with the Rev. Bill Matthews officiating. Burial will be in Rest Haven Memorial Garden, Seminole. Arrangements are under the direction of Cooper Funeral Home, Tecumseh.
Michael Furguson
Michael Furguson, 49, Leaky, Texas, died Friday in Del Rio, Texas. Services are pending and will be announced by Roesch-Walker Funeral Chapel.
Lola B. Stockton
Lola B. Stockton, 96, Shawnee, died Thursday at a local hospital.
She was born Sept. 12, 1901, in Franklin County, Ark., to Arthur Preston and Maud Mae (Dennis) Bryan.
She graduated from high school in Arkansas and married Robert Ostendorf on June 29, 1935. She owned a grocery store in Augusta, Kan., for many years.
After her first husband's death, she married Earl Stockton on Feb. 23, 1969. She was a licensed minister with the Assembly of God Churches and had been pastor at two churches. She moved to Shawnee in 1966. She was a member of Glad Tidings Assembly of God Church.
She is survived by a sister, Wilma Little, Shawnee; brothers John Bryan, Stroud, and Lonard Bryan, Wetumka; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents and both husbands, Robert Ostendorf, in 1956, and Earl Stockton, on May 12, 1982.
Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at Wetumka Cemetery, with the Rev. Ernest Strong officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of Resthaven Funeral Home.
William Hershel "Bill" Ford
William Hershel "Bill" Ford, 74, Shawnee, died Saturday at a local hospital.
He was born July 25, 1923, in Altus to John Kelly and Rosa Lee (Kelly) Ford. He married Margy Tucker in Hollis on Oct. 13, 1941. He was a medic in the Army Air Corp until 1945.
He was a member of the First Baptist Church, Hollis, Rotary Club, the Hollis School Board, and the Hollis Volunteer Fire Department. He operated the Harmon Tag Agency until moving to Shawnee in 1969. He worked for Southwest Title and Trust Company until 1979, then worked as an independent "land man" and for Coates Field Service.
He is survived by his wife, of the home; three daughters and two sons-in-law, Gay and Roger Painter, DeSoto, Texas; Billie Joy Royal, Shawnee; and Shelee and Don Stewart, Edmond; one son and daughter-in-law, Jim and Susan Ford, Prosper, Texas; brother Joe Lynn Ford, Dallas, Texas; grandchildren and grandchildren-in-law, Trent and Cheri Painter; Brett Royal, Traci Painter, Carrie Everett, Jessica Ford, Hannah Ford, Katie Royal, Kelee Everett, and Craig Everett; and stepgrandchildren Michelle Lentz and Brandon Stewart.
Visitation will be held from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday at Roesch-Walker Funeral Chapel. Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday in Hollis.
