UNA MAE HAMON
Mae Hamon was born in Atoka County to Bob and Ida (Doyal) Nichols on June 18, 1913. She passed away on Aug. 14, 2001 at the age of 88 years.
Mae spent her early years in the Bruner and Lane communities. She attended Harmony School where she played basketball on the girls' basketball team.
Mae later moved to Okmulgee where she married John Edgar Hamon. From this union five children were born.
Mae retired from Ball Brothers Glass Company in 1975 after working 30 years.
She is a past member of the Okmulgee Chapter of the Rebekah Lodge #103. She has been a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Ladies Auxiliary since 1962.
"Granny Mae" as she is affectionately known by many loved to play the card game Skip-bo and many hours of mutual enjoyment was spent by her children and grandchildren around her kitchen table playing the game.
She was preceded in death by an infant son, Jerry Wayne Hamon, a daughter Louise Viersen, a son John Hamon, and a grandson Mike Hamon.
Survivors include: a son and daughter-in-law Roy and Betty Hamon, Longview, TX; a son and daughter-in-law Bucky and Joyce Hamon, Okmulgee, OK; daughter-in-law Wanda Hamon of Okmulgee, OK.
Grandchildren are Jerry Wayne Sanders of Dalton, GA; Debbie McAlister, Broken Arrow, OK; Janet Reeves, Tulsa, OK; Don McClure, Tulsa, OK; Debbie Manns, Okmulgee, OK; Connie Adams, Broken Arrow, OK; Vicky Harsch, Sherwood, AR; Rick Hamon, Ft. Smith, AR; Karen Davis, Okmulgee, OK; Buster Hamon, Okmulgee, OK; 20 great grandchildren and 3 great-great grandchildren.
Services will be Thursday, August 16, 2001 at 10 a.m. at the McClendon Funeral Home with Rev. Don Nichols officiating. Burial will follow in the Okmulgee Cemetery.
Casketbearers will be Jerry Wayne Sanders, Rick Hamon, Buster Hamon, Don McClure, Jimmy Manns and Rusty Davis.
Cathelene V. Watson
Cathelene V. Watson, Okmulgee, died Aug. 12, 2001 at the local hospital. She was a retired teacher, having taught 40 years, of those in Okmulgee. Cathelene was born August 10, l912, in 8elleville, Arkansas, to Marcellus and Lula LittleJohn.
In 1918 they moved to Oklahoma. Her father become Reverend J.N. Littlejohn, a Methodist minister, He served 35 years before retirement. Cathelene joined the Methodist church at the age of 8 and was a loyal member the rest of her life. The last more than 40 years, she was a member of the Okmulgee United Methodist Church.
Cathelene met Jeryl A. Watson in 1940 then she taught at Graham school, south of Henryetta, Jeryl had already been teaching there for 5 years. They were married in the Dustin United Methodist Church on June lst, l941. He preceded her in death in August 1994. Cathelene graduated from Shawnee High School in 1928. She attended OBU in Shawnee for one year and changed to East Central College in Ada, Oklahoma, where she received her A.B. degree in 1931, at the age of 18. She started her teaching career that fall. She taught for ten years before she married Jeryl. With the exception of four years they continued to teach until retirement in 1974. Jeryl spent four years in the Air Force. Cathelene was with him the four years also.
Cathelene and Jeryl continued their education after moving to Okmulgee. They received the Master's Degree in 1952 from OSU. Stillwater and continued with 30 hours toward a Doctorate Degree. They attended one summer at NWU, Weatherford, and one summer at Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas. They moved to Okmulgee in 1950 and taught until they retired in 1974. They were both active in Okmulgee United Methodist church, school activities, community organizations and the Democratic Party.
Cathelene was President of Wesleyan Service Guild, United Methodist Women, Tulsa District and Muskogee District. She served as chairman of several committees and taught youth Sunday school classes. She played the piano for Sunday evening services and 50-50 Sunday school class. She was president of Okmulgee County Teacher's Association, and was a member of the State Education Committee and was chosen as Okmulgee County Teacher of the Year in 1968. She was President for two years of Okmulgee Business and Professional Women's Club, President two years of American Association of University Women, two years of Delta Kappa Gamma, (National Honor Society of Women Teachers), and served in many offices of various school and church organizations. She and Jeryl were both active in the Democratic Party, serving in several offices.
There are no immediate survivors.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m., Wednesday at the First United Methodist Church with Rev. Guy Langston officiating. Burial will be in the Okmulgee Cemetery under direction of the McClendon-Winters Funeral Home. Casketbearers will be Olin Harris, Dr. Walt McGown, Dr. Jerry Thorman, Rob Robertson, Roy Belford and Bill Martin.
Memorial contributions may be made to the First United Methodist Church Endowment Fund.
Visitation will be Tuesday from 4 p.m. until 6 p.m. at the funeral home.
UNA MAE HAMON
Una Mae Hamon, 88, of Okmulgee died Aug.14, 2001 at Saint Francis Hospital in Tulsa. She was born June 18, 1913 in Atoka to Bob and Ida (Doyal) Nichols.
Survivors include two sons, Roy Hamon of Texas and Bucky Hamon of Okmulgee; many grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren and other relatives. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Louise Viersen, a son, John Hamon and a grandson.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at the McClendon-Winters Funeral Home with Rev. Don Nichols officiating. Burial will follow in the Okmulgee Cemetery.
RONALD F. VAUGHAN
Ronald F. "Ronnie" Vaughan, 62, died Aug. 11, 2001 in Jenks.
He was a native of Morris and retired postmaster in Sapulpa and owner of Northside Tastee Freeze.
Survivors include his wife Barbara of the home; sons and daughters-in-law, Robert Vaughan of Broken Arrow, Scott and Karmen Vaughan of Jenks, and Eric and Maureen Vaughan of Jenks; a brother, Deloy Vaughan of Sperry; and five grandchildren.
Services will be held at 2 p.m., Wednesday at the Lee and Walnut Church of Christ in Sapulpa. Burial to follow in the Morris Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the Fitzgerald Southwood Colonial Chapel in Tulsa from 6 until 8 p.m., on Tuesday.
The family requests memorials be made to the Hope Harbor Childrens Home in Claremore.
SAMUAL W. FREVERT
Samual W. Frevert, 75, former longtime resident of Okmulgee died Thursday, Aug. 9 in Tulsa. He was born Aug. 20, 1925 in Carthage, Mo.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Frederick and Blanche Frevert, longtime well-known Okmulgee residents; and his daughter, Jacqueline Hand.
Sam was raised in Okmulgee and was always proud to be a Bulldog. He attended university at Texas A&M. He worked for Burlington Northern Railroad from 1947 until 1957. He was the first director for the Port of Catoosa. He continued his active life in transportation through his interests in aeronautics and boating. Sam was a member of the Quiet Birdmen. He was well-known in music and as a bass soloist he sang with several Tulsa church choirs.
Survivors include his wife, Norma Jean "Johnnye" of Tulsa; his sister, Barbara Tramutt of Denver; his son, John "Buck" Wilkin of Nashville, his daughter, Sally Davis of San Antonio and many other family members.
Services were held Tuesday, Aug. 14 at 2 p.m., at Southern Hills Baptist Church in Tulsa.
OSCAR LEE PHILLIPS
Oscar Lee Phillips, 61, a resident of the Nuyaka Community west of Okmulgee, died Saturday, Aug. 11, 2001 at the local hospital. He was born May 30, 1940 in Nuyaka, the son of John Philips and Idella Queen Phillips.
He attended Nuyaka schools and was a brick mason in the construction industry. He was also a farmer and a member of the Northside Evangelistic Temple in Preston. He was preceded in death on Aug. 3, 2001 by his wife, Mary Brantley Phillips.
Survivors include his sons, Keith Phillips of Okmulgee, Larry Phillips, Ted O.L. Phillips, Tracy Phillips and Stacy Phillips, all of Grayson; his daughters, Alicea Bagby of Preston, and Lorzetta Phillips and Eliza Phillips, both of Morris; his brothers, Earl Bowman Phillips and James Allen Phillips, both of Okmulgee; sisters, Johnnie Mae Phillips of Okmulgee and Bertie Mae Wagner of Crockett, Texas; 18 grandchildren and a host of other relatives and friends.
Service of Memory will be held Saturday, Aug. 18 at 11a.m., in the Northside Evangelistic Temple in Preston with Elder Ralph Bagby officiating. Burial will follow in the Nuyaka Cemetery under direction of the Keith D. Biglow Funeral Directors, Inc., of Okmulgee.
Visitation will be Friday, Aug. 17 from 10 a.m., until 7p.m., at the funeral home.
EDD LESTER
Edd Lester, 82, former Henryetta resident, died Aug. 13, 2001 in Oklahoma City.
Arrangements are pending with Shurden Funeral Home of Henryetta.
A. W. HAMPTON
Archille Wendell "A. W." Hampton of Okmulgee died Saturday, Aug. 4, 2001 at his home. He was born in Yeager, Oklahoma to Wade H. and Ivory Ann (Bruner) Hampton.
He joined the United States Navy and later became a school teacher at the Okmulgee Public Schools. He was a member of Phi Alpha Phi Fraternity and had received a Degree of Honorary American Farmer. He attended Tuskeegee University where he received his Bachelors Degree and Oklahoma State University where he received his Masters Degree. He enjoyed fishing, tennis, watching football and traveling. He worked on various boards including Okmulgee Hospital Board, YMCA Board and the Chamber of Commerce.
Survivors include his wife, Lavern (Cherry) Hampton of the home; a daughter, Eva R. McGee of St. Louis, Mo.; two sons, Wade H. Hampton of St. Louis, Mo., and W. Alan Hampton of Okmulgee; and a sister, Jewel (Hampton) Gibson.
Rosary will be Tuesday, Aug., 7 at 7:30 p.m., at the McClendon-Winters Funeral Home in Okmulgee.
Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11 a.m., Wednesday, Aug. 8 at St. Anthony's Catholic Church in Okmulgee with the Rev. Amalor Vima officiating. Burial will be in the Okmulgee Cemetery under direction of the McClendon-Winters Funeral Home of Okmulgee.
The family requests that donations be made to the American Heart Association, Alzheimer's Disease Research or American Kidney Foundation.
GENE ALLEN
Gene Allen, 82, died Aug. 6, 2001. He was born May 12, 1919 in Flippin, Ark.
As a young child he moved to Edna, Okla, where he attended school, later joining the United States Army in 1939. Six years later he moved to Okmulgee and married Ida Jaggars. Working as a heavy equipment operator they moved to many different cities before returning to Okmulgee where he worked for the City of Okmulgee for 26 years until his retirement in 1980. Preceding him in death were his son, Dean Allen, his father, Claude Allen, his mother, Lucinda (Reeves) Allen, his stepmother, Julia Allen, his sisters, Pauline McCollum and Vinita Allen and a brother, George Allen.
Survivors include his wife of 55 years, Ida; his daughter, Judy and son-in-law, Steve Hankins; three grandchildren; a great-granddaughter; step sisters, Mary Ramsey, Katie Settle and Hannah Tatro; a host of nieces and nephews and friends.
Graveside services were held at 10 a.m., Tuesday, Aug. 7 at the Okmulgee Cemetery with the Rev. Raymond Doke officiating.
Services were under direction of the McClendon-Winters Funeral Home.
