SAMUEL MILLER
Samuel (Sam) Miller, 100, of Henryetta died Oct. 2, 2001 at Henryetta. He was born Sept. 15, 1901 in Cooke County, Texas.
Arrangements are pending with Shurden Funeral Home.
JOE NOLAN CROWLEY
Joe Nolan Crowley, age 70, died Thursday, September 27, 2001 in Saint Francis Hospital in Tulsa.
He was born November 1, 1930 in Dewar, Oklahoma to Joe Nolan Crowley, SR and Bessie (Shoun) Crowley.
He graduated from Okmulgee High School in 1948. He attended Wayne University for two years in Detroit, MI. He served in the United States Air Force.
He married Bertha Tucker on June 30, 1956 in Tulsa.
Mr. Crowley worked as a barber for many years. He owned the Downtown Barber Shop in Okmulgee.
In 1970, he left the barber business and began Crowley Construction Company, a custom home building company. His company built many homes in the Okmulgee County area over the next ten years.
He retired from the construction business in the early 1980's due to health reasons.
For several years, the Crowley's owned the Okmulgee Flea Market in downtown.
Joe Crowley had three great loves in his life - his family, University of Oklahoma sports, and the Republican Party.
He played an active part in the Republican Party in Okmulgee County. He served as the county campaign manager for Henry Bellmon's Gubernatorial and Senate campaigns. He served as County Republican Chairman for several terms and also as finance chair. He attended many Republican National Conventions, serving many times as a Sergeant-at-Arms.
In 1972, he served as a Presidential Elector for the state of Oklahoma for Richard Nixon. Mr. Crowley also is a past board member of the Okmulgee Salvation Army Board of Directors.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Joe N. Crowley SR, and Bessie (Crowley) Vaughn; also, three brothers, James Oscar Lindsay and his wife Mary; Willard (Red) Vaughn; and Hughes Vaughn.
He is survived by his wife, Bertha, of the home. Also, one son, Nolan T. Crowley and wife Mary, of Okmulgee; two grandchildren, Isabella and Anna Crowley of Okmulgee, one sister-in-law, Florence Vaughn, of Mt. Home, Arkansas; and many other cousins, nieces and nephews, and a host of other family and friends.
Services will be held Wednesday, October 3, 2001 at 2 PM in the Westlawn Cemetery in Henryetta. Rev. Dal Newberry will officiate.
Memorials may be made to the Marian Academy Catholic School or to the Okmulgee County Humane Society.
JOHN 'JR.' E. LAMKIN
John "Jr." E. Lamkin, 50, a longtime resident of Okmulgee died on Saturday, September 29, 2001 in Tulsa. He was born on August 21,1951 to John Sr. and Roberta (Meneley) Lamkin in Richmond, California.
He was married to Helen Brown on August 27, 1985 in Grayson, Texas. He retired from McDonald Douglas as a paint and body man. He was preceded in death by his father and one brother Robert Lynn Lamkin.
Survivors include his mother, Roberta Lamkin of Okmulgee; wife, Helen Lamkin of the home; one stepson, Billy McDonald of Okmulgee; one stepdaughter, Carol Driver of Okmulgee; one brother, Tom Lamkin, Sr. of Granby, Missouri; two sisters, Marsha Luallen of Okmulgee and Dennise Maddox of Okmulgee; and six grandchildren.
Services will be at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, October 3, 2001 at Kelley Funeral Home Chapel in Okmulgee. Bishop Tony Gustin will officiate. Burial will follow in Okmulgee Cemetery. Services are under direction of Kelley Funeral Home.
CHARLES L. MOSS
Charles L. Moss, 82, of Edmond, Okla., and native of Preston, died Sept. 29, 2001 at the Edmond Memorial Hospital from complications following heart surgery. He was born June 5, 1919 in Preston to W. T. and Adeline (Hottenstein) Moss.
He graduated from Preston High School and served the Civilian Conservation Crop., (CCC) in Broken Bow, Okmulgee and Morris. He enlisted in the 45th Infantry when the Division was called to active duty in 1940. He trained at Camp Barkley, Texas, Camp Picket, Va., Camp Devens Mass. and Camp Pine in New York before assignments in Africa, Sicily, Italy, France and Germany. He was a battlefield medic with the 120th Medical Battallion of the 45th Div. He served with the units that liberated Dachua Concentration Camp. He returned from the service in 1945 and attended OSU-Okmulgee. He married Lucille Trease of Morris in June of 1949. He retired as an air condition, heating engineer at Tinker Air Force Base, Oklahoma.
Survivors include his wife of 52 years Lucille; four sons, Dr. Gregory Moss of Weatherford, Dr. Phillip Moss of Norman and Kevin Moss of Nashville, Tenn.; nine grandchildren; two brothers, Glenn Moss of Okmulgee and W.T. Moss of Sonora, Calif.; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister, Mabel Houghton of Edmond and a brother, Paul Moss of El Paso.
Services were at 10 a.m., Tuesday, Oct. 2 at Edmond under direction of Baggerly Funeral Home and burial was in Edmond Memorial Cemetery.
ANIE MARIE REESE
Anie Marie Reese, 90, of Okmulgee died Sept. 27, 2001 in Okmulgee. She was born Oct.15, 1911 in Harlan, Iowa.
She was the widow of Leslie B. Reese who died less than two months ago. They lived in Tulsa from 1951 until 1972 when they moved to Okmulgee. She was active in the musical community in Tulsa until 1998 when illness restricted her commute from Okmulgee to Tulsa.
Survivors include a son, Leo C. Larsen; four grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Graveside services
will be held at 10 a.m., Wednesday at Memorial Park Cemetery in Tulsa under direction of Stanleys Funeral Home.
BOBBY WHEELER
Bobby Wheeler, 61, of Sapulpa and formerly of Okmulgee County died Saturday.
He graduated from Preston High School in 1959 and from Central State College at Edmond in 1962. He received his Masters Degree from Texas A&M in 1968. He served as a teacher, coach and administrator for six schools, including Wilson School in Okmulgee County. He held the Golden Gloves Championship title from 1959 until 1963. He also participated in rodeos, including serving as a judge.
Among survivors are five daughters, Jodi Mitcheltree of Sapulpa, Jamie McElroy of Mounds, Windy Alexander of Tulsa, Billie Jean Wright of Seminole and Bobbie Jo Vincent of Shawnee; two brothers, twin brother, Billy Wheeler of Muskogee and Jim Wheeler of Boynton and a sister, Jane Wheeler of Bixby. He was preceded in death by a son, Greg Wheeler and a grandson, Bryar Wheeler.
Memorial services will be held at 10 a.m., Friday, Oct. 5, at the Smith Funeral Home Chapel in Sapulpa.
INEZ ANDERSON
Inez Anderson, 82, of Okmulgee died Sept. 30, 2001 in a Kansas City, Mo., hospital. She was born July 24, 1919 in Boley, Okla., to J.W. and Dena (Little) Johnson.
Survivors include three sons, James Anderson of Kansas City, Mo., Ottie Edgar Anderson of Denver, Colo., and Nathaniel Lee Anderson of Denver; a daughter, Janet Cannady of Kansas City, Mo.; and numerous other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Ottie "Buddy" Anderson.
Funeral services
will be at 11a.m, Saturday, Oct. 6 in the Macedonia Baptist Church with Rev. C. J. Jeffrey Jr., officiating.
Burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery under direction of the House of Winn Funeral Home.
Visitation will be Friday from 12 noon until 6 p.m.
IRVING H. HESSOM
Irving Howard "Rusty" Hessom, 65, of Okmulgee died at his home in Grapevine, Texas. He was self-employed in construction work.
Survivors include two sons, Dusty Hessom of Morris and Kirk Hessom; a daughter, Holly Roach and husband Roy of Texas; two grandchildren and his step-mother, Imo Hessom.
Graveside services
will be at 1 p.m., Thursday at the Okmulgee Cemetery with Scott Fetgatter officiating. Arrangements are under direction of the Martin-Thompson Funeral Home of Grapevine, Texas.
ELMER L. HOUSE
Elmer Leonard House, 91, longtime Okmulgee resident, died Sept. 25, 2001 in a Tulsa hospital. He was born May 30, 1910 in Henryetta to Charlie and Mary (Overton) House.
He attended Rentie School, west of Henryetta, before moving to Okmulgee with his family. He then attended Okmulgee schools, graduating from Dunbar High School. He attended Northwestern University where he concentrated on his undergraduate studies and then earned his B.A. degree and his Master's degree from Langston University. He enjoyed a long career with the Okmulgee Public School System where he was a counselor, coach and educator at Dunbar High School and then was assistant principal at Okmulgee High School in the 1970's. He retired from the school system in 1973 and was also a farmer. He was a member of Eastside Baptist Church where he served as a deacon and a trustee of the church for a number of years.
Survivors include his son, Alfred House of Ellenwood, Ga.; a sister, Mable Martin of Chicago, Ill.; two grandchildren, one great-grandchild and a host of nieces, nephews and other relatives and many friends.
Service of Memory will be held Monday, Oct. 1 at 11 a.m., in the Eastside Baptist Church with the pastor, Rev. Eddie Davis Sr., officiating. Burial will be in the National Cemetery at Fort Gibson, Okla., under direction of the Keith D. Biglow Funeral Directors, Inc., of Okmulgee.
Casketbearers will be deacons and trustees of Eastside Baptist Church, former students and athletes he coached.
Visitation will be Sunday from 1 until 6 p.m., in the Chapel of Peace at the funeral home.
RHEBA MAE WITHROW
Rheba Mae Withrow, 73, longtime Henryetta resident, died Sept. 25, 2001 at Henryetta. She was born Sept. 6, 1928 at Henryetta to Robert Thompson and Charity (Hale)Thompson.
She was married to Jimmie Withrow Sr., on Dec.18, 1943 at Henryetta. She was a florist and owned and operated Rheba's Flowers for many years. She was a member of General Assembly of God of the Firstborn and was baptized by her brother Loyd Thompson. She attended Henryetta Public Schools and was a member of the VFW Auxiliary and American Legion. She was preceded in death by her parents, a granddaughter, Rebecca Ingram and a brother, Robert Thompson.
Survivors include her husband of the home; four children, James D. Withrow Jr., of Tulsa, Doug Withrow and wife Vickie of Skiatook, Judy Kennedy and husband Jim of Sand Springs and Becky Ingram of Henryetta; five grandchildren and two sisters, Margie McKay of Henryetta and Evelyn Westby of Rapid City, South Dakota.
Services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Friday at the Shurden Chapel with Brother Royce Thompson officiating. Burial will be in the Westlawn Cemetery under direction of the Shurden Funeral Home.
Pallbearers will be Ron McAfee, Steve Shurden, Andy Bealko, O. J. McKay, Jim Juno and Dennis Mitchell.
