POTEAU — Rita Fisk, 86, of Poteau died Tuesday, Aug. 24, 2004, in Poteau. She was born April 13, 1918, in Cleveland, Ohio. She was a homemaker, a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Poteau where she worked in the church’s food pantry.
Rosary will be 1:30 p.m. Friday at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Poteau, with funeral Mass at 2 p.m. and burial at Oakland Cemetery in Poteau under the direction of Grace Manor Funeral Home of Poteau.
She is survived by three daughters, Mary Morris, Sherry Fish and Janice Johnson; two sons, Jerry and Bill Fisk; 17 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
Garland Gee
POTEAU — Garland Ray Gee, 41, of Poteau died Monday, Aug. 23, 2004, in his home. He was born March 5, 1963, in Jacksboro, Texas. He was a self-employed carpenter.
Graveside service will be 10 a.m. Friday at Shady Point Cemetery in Shady Point under the direction of Evans & Miller Funeral Home of Poteau.
He is survived by two children, Kevin and Kelsey Gee, both of Poteau; three sisters, Donna Traw, Lynita Lovell and Linda Gee, all of Poteau; a brother, Donald Shadden of Purdy, Mo.; and a former wife, Michele Gee of Poteau.
Thomas Malone
HONOLULU, Hawaii — Thomas F. Malone, 65, of Honolulu, Hawaii died Monday, Aug. 23, 2004, in Little Rock.
Funeral will be noon Friday at Keota First Baptist Church with burial at Old Bokoshe Cemetery in Bokoshe under the direction of King & Shearwood Funeral Home of Stigler, Okla.
He is survived by his wife, Janet; a daughter, Stephanie Malone of Orange County, Calif.; two sons, Mike Malone of Oklahoma City and Christopher Malone of Dallas; and his mother, Erma Basket of Oklahoma City.
Calvin Lee Dowdy
Calvin Lee Dowdy died Wednesday, Sept. 1, 2004, in Bristow, Okla., at the age of 65. He was born in Castle, Okla., to George Dowdy and Nellie (Williams) Dowdy. He married Dorothy Woodard and worked for the Allen Canning Co. in Siloam Springs for many years. He moved to Bristow in 1976, from Van Buren and became a self-employed businessman. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, trading and gardening.
Calvin is survived by his wife, Dorothy (Woodard) Dowdy of the home; four sons, George Dowdy of Edna, Okla., David Dowdy and his wife, Ellen, of Bristow, Okla., James and Carrie Dowdy of Liberty Mounds, and Robert and Sherry Dowdy of Springfield, Mo. Four daughters, Bonnie (Dowdy) Gibson and husband, Terry of Fayetteville, Sandra McKenzie of Rogers, Shirley Towler of Bristow, Okla., and Carla (Dowdy) Dostal and husband, Charles of Bristow. Also, three brothers, Leon and Hazel Bentley of Van Buren, Bobby Bentley and wife, Karen, of Mountainburg, and Johnny Bentley and wife, Linda, of Poteau. Five sisters, Gertie and Jim Taylor of Van Buren, Peggy Davis of Uniontown, Carolyn Loaskie of Alex, Mary Sue McClain of Van Buren and Alta Mae Mullins of Van Buren. Calvin also had 28 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and a host of other family and friends.
Funeral will be 3 p.m. today at Freewill Baptist Church with interment at Welty Cemetery under the direction of Schumacher Funeral Home of Bristow, Okla.
Atha Israel
PANAMA — Atha Jean Israel, 68, of Panama died Saturday, Sept. 4, 2004, in Fort Smith. She was born Feb. 11, 1936, in Van Buren. She was retired from Whirlpool after 25 years of service and was the widow of Robert Foster.
Funeral will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at Evans & Miller Funeral Home Chapel of Memories in Poteau with burial at New Hope Cemetery in Spiro.
She is survived by her husband, Edwin; four daughters, Ramona Sutton and Wynema Gindhart, both of Sallisaw, Donna Goines of Lavon, Texas, and Regina Powers of Cowlington, Okla.; three sons, Randall Foster and Roy Thompson, both of Panama, and David Israel of Greenwood; six sisters, Zelta Smith of Chrisney, Ind., Leta Morton of Panama, Valeda Johnston of Pocola, Mary Morgan of Poteau, Patricia Hopkins of Borger, Texas, and Barbara Ritter of Spiro; a brother, Dale Blassingame of Van Buren; 19 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be her grandsons Mike Powers Jr., Joey Gindhart, Bobby Goines, Chris Powers, Allen Wald and Justin Thompson.
The family will visit with friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
Vernie Lucas
VIAN — Vernie Raymond Lucas, 63, of Vian, formerly of Sallisaw, died Sunday, Aug. 22, 2004, in Vian. He was born May 22, 1941, in Commerce, Okla. He was a technician for Bell Telephone, an Air Force veteran and of the Christian faith.
Memorial service and burial of cremains will be 10 a.m. Sunday at Blackjack Cemetery northwest of Muldrow under the direction of Agent Funeral Home of Sallisaw.
He is survived by a daughter, Deedra Link; a son, Tim Lucas of Silverton, Ore.; two sisters, Betty Epperson of Pegram, Tenn., and Bonita Drake of Owasso, Okla.; two brothers, Michael Lucas of Longmont, Colo., and David Lucas of Hendersonville, Tenn.; and seven grandchildren.
Bettie Smith
POTEAU — Bettie Lorene Smith, 76, of Poteau died Thursday, Sept. 2, 2004, in Poteau. She was born Sept. 1, 1928, in Oklahoma. She was a retired hostess and the widow of Marion Ross.

She is survived by two sons, Michael Martin of Houston and Ronald Martin of Poteau; two sisters, Ruth Felkner and Joan Beshears, both of Fort Smith; three brothers, Ronnie Brown of Denton, Texas, James Poole of Willis, Texas, and Charles Poole of Fort Smith; four grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
John Carter
PORUM, Okla. — John “Johnny” Enoch Carter, 49, of Porum, Okla., died Thursday, Sept. 2, 2004, in Stigler. He served in the Army and was a truck driver.
Funeral will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at First Baptist Church in Porum with burial at Coleman Cemetery in Porum under the direction of Mallory-Martin Funeral Home of Stigler.
He is survived by his wife, Lorraine; two sons, Richard and Michael Carter, both of Porum; four sisters, Alberta Girty of Vian, Helen Hensley and Viola Bayliss, both of Porum, and Rosetta Pack of Warner, Okla.; seven brothers, Lambert Scott of Muskogee, Okla., Eugene and Melvin Scott and Fred Carter, all of Porum, Howard Angle of Germany, Darrell Carter of Watonga, Okla., and Charlie Carter of Checotah, Okla.; and three grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be his brothers.
Clayton King
SPIRO — Clayton Thomas King, 15, of Spiro died Friday, Sept. 3, 2004, in Tulsa. He was born May 16, 1989, in Poteau. He was a sophomore at Spiro High School.
Memorial service will be 10 a.m. today at Spiro High School Gym. Cremation is under the direction of Grace Manor Funeral Home of Poteau.
He is survived by his parents, Dale and Beatrice Linkenhoker of the home; a sister, Kaila of the home; and his grandparents, Marianne Campbell of Spiro and J.B. and Barbara Ayers of Floyd, Va.
Rosa Pyland
POTEAU — Rosa Belle Pyland, 66, of Poteau died Monday, Sept. 6, 2004, in a Fort Smith hospital. She was born Dec. 13, 1937, in Tulsa. She was an educator at the Headstart Program, and a member of Southside Baptist Church in Poteau.
Graveside service will be 10 a.m. Thursday at Oakland Cemetery Pavilion in Poteau under the direction of Evans & Miller Funeral Home of Poteau.
She is survived by her husband, Troy; three daughters, Kathy Tolbert of Broken Arrow, Okla., Paula Woods of Collierville, Tenn., and “Bunnie” Nichols of Princeton, Ky.; three son, Clarence Hayes of Edmond, Okla., Paul Hayes of Ardmore, Okla., and Todd Pyland of Broken Arrow, Okla.; 11 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be Robert Woods, Ronnie Nichols, Cody Shipman, Jeremy Dale, Shad Pyland and Terry Tolbert.
Brittney Leighanne Cox
Brittney Leighanne Cox, 15, of Poteau, passed away Saturday, Aug. 28, 2004, in Poteau. She was born Feb. 8, 1989, in Fort Smith.
Brittney is survived by her parents, Robert Cox of Vian and Tammy Cox of Poteau; her special brother, Cody Cox, and half-sister, Katelin Cox; her maternal Nana and Pop, Stanley and Judy Branch of Poteau; her maternal great-grandparents, Fines and Goldie Sturgeon of Poteau; her aunt Melody and uncle Johnny Wood and her little cousin Kyla Wood of Poteau; her paternal grandparents, Leonard and Linda Cox of Vian; and her aunts and uncles, Doug and Brenda Sanders of Poteau, Becky Williams, Sharron Hoover, Sheila Leevston, Len and Cathy Cox and Andrew and Adam Cox.
Funeral will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at Bob Lee Kidd Civic Center in Poteau with the Revs. Keith Williams and Jimmy Cook officiating, and burial at Oakland Cemetery in Poteau under the direction of Evans and Miller Funeral Home of Poteau.
Brittney is preceded in death by one special uncle who loved her very much, Jeff Branch, and her maternal great-grandparents, Henry and Mary Branch.
Brittney was a sophomore at Poteau High School, where she was a varsity cheerleader. She was a member of the FFA and loved gymnastics, listening to music and cruising.
She leaves behind a host of relatives and friends, including special friends Tara Thompson, Ashley Ralls, Samantha Sager, Crystal Cooper, Drue DeCamp and Torey Tanksley.
Pallbearers will be Cody Cox, Scotty White, Brad Odom, Tyler Hemphill, Josh Williams, Jamie Armstrong, Dustin Reece and D.J. Anderson. Honorary pallbearers will be Ricky Seals, Joseph Bunch, Joe Paul Collins, Jamie Delude and the sophomore class of Poteau High School.
Gladys Mae Brown
Gladys Mae Brown, 88, of Sallisaw died Friday, Aug. 27, 2004, in Sallisaw. She was born Dec. 31, 1915, in Densmore, Kan. She was a homemaker and attended Prices Chapel Baptist Church.
Graveside service will be 2 p.m. today at Fleetwood Cemetery east of Sallisaw under the direction of Agent Funeral Home of Sallisaw.
She is survived by a daughter, Debbie and husband Jay Fleetwood of Sallisaw; two sons, Billy D. Brown and wife Joan of Sallisaw and Norman Brown and wife Kaye of Fort Smith; and three grandchildren, Darren Brown, Becky Brown and Josh Fleetwood.
She was preceded in death by a daughter, Vicki Lee Brown, and her husband, Dwight Leroy Brown, in October 2003.
Lillian Peevyhouse
STIGLER — Lillian Mae Peevyhouse, 71, of Stigler died Sunday, Aug. 22, 1999, in a local hospital. She was a nurses aid for several years.
Graveside service will be 11 a.m. today at Antioch Cemetery of Stigler under the direction of King & Shearwood Funeral Home of Stigler.
She is survived by two daughters, Glenda of Tulsa and Mary Frances Watts of Chattanooga, Tenn.; her mother, Alta Warford of Stigler; two sisters, Evelyn Harrell of Stigler and Freda Vandergriff of Tishamingo, Okla.; three grandchildren, Teresa and Joe Davis of Tulsa and Brian Ballard of Chattannoga, Tenn.; and two great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be Kenneth Brown, Don Hinkle, Bernard Brazeal, Willie Peevyhouse, Winford Brown and Carroll Browning.
