Juanita Reed
Juanita Reed died October 29, 2004 at Jackson County Memorial Hospital. Juanita Kirkwood was born July 19,
1909 to Noah and Belle Kirkwood at Madill, Oklahoma. She grew up in the Madill area and graduated from
Madill High School. The family moved to Frederick and Juanita moved to Altus to attend Fulton Business
College.
On October 26, 1929 she married Jesse Herman (Bill) Reed in Altus. To this union was born one son, Bill Kirk
Reed. Bill and Juanita resided in Altus throughout their lives.
Bill was a member of First Baptist Church, Altus. Soon after their marriage Juanita joined the church where
both were active members. Juanita became a teacher in the Junior Department. She was active in W.M.U.
and also enjoyed doing devotionals for various occasions.
Some time later she began teaching a young women’s Bible Study Class. She was an excellent Bible teacher
who studied diligently for her class presentations. Juanita learned much from the older Christian women who
became her role models. Through the years Juanita continued to teach women’s classes until 1996, when
failing health made it impossible for Bill and her to attend. After teaching for nearly 50 years, retiring was
extremely difficult for Juanita, for she loved the Lord’s work and her class members.
Bill and Juanita shared an extremely loving marriage relationship. Even after they were older, Bill often
reminded her how much he loved her and how beautiful she was. In those years, especially, her life revolved
around Bill. He became homebound, unable to move from room to room without help, but she was at his side
day and night. Though she had been diagnosed with leukemia, she waited on him tenderly and lovingly when
her own strength had been depleted. It was only through God’s grace that she was able to carry on. Her life
became one of service to Bill and to God. Still, Juanita never lost contact with her many friends staying in
touch by telephone and personal visits.
In May 2003, Bill moved on to his eternal life. Though extremely difficult, Juanita carried on. With the light of
her life gone, she resided at Plantation Nursing Home and could have easily slipped into depression, but she
knew that God, Bill and her family and friends would be grieved by that. She was determined to make the best
of her remaining time. Her loving family and friends came for many visits, making the long days easier.
Those who knew her well realized that Juanita Reed was an interesting and unique person. She loved people
and enjoyed a good joke. She had a very interesting personality. She owned the wealth of many friends and
had the God-given gift of a sharp mind until the end. She could become extremely upset over minute things
that others might not even notice and make a huge issue of what seemed like nothing. But when something
really important transpired involving pain, sorrow or a need, she was compassionate, helpful and strong as a
rock.
Juanita was preceded in death by her parents, her beloved husband, two brothers, W. Roy Kirkwood and
Floyd Leo Kirkwood, and a sister, Laura Mae Tripp.
She is survived by her son, Bill Kirk Reed and wife, Doann of Norman, Oklahoma, a granddaughter, Kathy
Reed, of Guthrie, Oklahoma, a grandson, Kirk Reed, of Norman, Oklahoma, a brother-in-law, Chester Reed
and wife Norma of California, a sister and brother-in-law, Lola and Millard Hall, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, and
several nieces and nephew and many friends.
Services will be held Wednesday, November 3, 2004 at 10:00 am at the First Baptist Church in Altus with Rev.
Keith Wiginton officiating. Interment will follow at the Altus City Cemetery. Memorials can be made to the First
Baptist Church.

RICHARDSON
Lena Evelyn (Render) Richardson was born November 13, 1928 in Eldorado, Oklahoma and passed this life on
Tuesday, February 19, 2008 in the Hardeman County Memorial Hospital, Quanah, Texas.
Lena Evelyn was the fourth child born to James Olin “Chum” and Lena Leslie (Gardner) Render. She was the
only one who survived to adulthood. A 1946 graduate of Eldorado High School, Lena Evelyn attended
Oklahoma College for Women in Chickasha and Oklahoma A & M University in Stillwater. Much to the dismay
of her parents, she did not complete her college education, but returned to Eldorado to marry “the love of her
life” John Doyle Richardson on November 20, 1948 in Quanah, Texas. They made their home in Eldorado.
Their only child, Leslie Joan, arrived on Easter Sunday, April 9, 1950.
The young family then moved to Wichita, Kansas. From there they moved to Yuma, Arizona where they farmed
irrigated cotton; then to Lubbock, Pampa and Dimmitt, Texas, before returning to Eldorado to take over the
Render family farm and to custom combine.
While in Pampa, Lena Evelyn and John Doyle were both employed by Cabot, John at the plant and as a driver
and Lena Evelyn in the downtown office where she had her first taste of technology as an IBM keypunch
operator. While in Dimmitt, she worked part time in the office of the Castro County Judge.
Following John Doyle’s death in 1971, she took on the farming operation and worked as an inspector at one of
the factories in Eldorado; in the mid 1970’s she was employed as a house mother at the Canadian County
Youth Shelter in El Reno, Oklahoma. Lena Evelyn then began working at the bank in Eldorado in 1978, where
she worked until her retirement.
Lena Evelyn and J.R. Miller were married in July, 1984. This was a second marriage for both. J.R. passed
away in October, 1994.
Lena Evelyn had a passion for reading. She campaigned long and hard for the bookmobile that services this
area. A member of several local clubs and organizations, she gave one hundred percent to what she believed
in.
Rev. Don Ladner, formerly of Eldorado, will conduct her service on Thursday, February 21, 2008, at 2:00 p.m.
at the Eldorado First Baptist Church, where she was a member; burial will follow at the Eldorado Cemetery
under the direction of Lowell-Tims Funeral Home of Eldorado.
Preceded in death by her siblings; her parents; her husbands; son-in-law, James Crawford Gillam; her half
brother, Glen Render, Lena Evelyn leaves behind her daughter, Joan Gillam and grandson, Trevin Gillam,
both of Eldorado; a niece, Paralyn (Render) Moore, Canyon, Texas; a few relatives and a great number of
friends. Her absence will create an emptiness in the hearts of those who knew her.
