U.L. Thompson Yerby
U.L. "Shorty" Thompson Yerby, 95, died Friday, Aug. 19, 2005, at a local nursing home.

She was born March 28, 1910, in Caviness, Okla., to James M. and Ora L. (Foster) Hogan.

She married Howard L. Thompson Sr., who preceded her in death in 1971. She later married Jimmie Yerby in 1975 in Pawnee. Mr. Yerby preceded her in death earlier this year.

She spent many years as a housewife but also worked as a librarian at the old Carnegie Library in the late 1930s. She also helped run the family dairy for many years.

She was active in the Shawnee Round-up Club in the 1940s and '50s. She was a member of Northwest Missionary Baptist Church.

Survivors include one son, Howard L. Thompson and wife Lora Dean of Shawnee; one daughter, Juanita L. Lee and husband Jimmie Lee of Prague; one daughter-in-law, Shirley Thompson of Shawnee; two stepsons, Johnny Yerby and wife Beth of Oklahoma City and Curtiss Yerby and wife Pam of Oklahoma City; four sisters, Hester Garrison of Oakdale, Calif., Thelma Hatala of Springfield, Ind., Lorene McKinney of Oklahoma City and Marian Coleman of Oklahoma City; nine grandchildren, Jerry Tim Swink, Danny Swink, Chester (Butch) Miles, Michael Lee, Kenny Thompson, Michael Thompson, Ricky Lee, Beth Condit and Sandra Keaton; 17 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.

Also preceding her in death were her parents; one son, Kenneth Floyd Thompson; two sisters, Beulah Smith and Mattie Smith; three brothers, Lester Hogan, James Hogan and Joe Hogan; and one stepson, Glendale Yerby.

Services will be 2 p.m. Monday, Aug. 22, at Northwest Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. Ed Fox officiating. Burial will follow at Tecumseh Cemetery. Services are under the direction of Gaskill Funeral Chapel.

Billy Joe Shafer
Chandler resident Billy Joe Shafer, 73, died Aug. 18, 2005, in Tulsa.

He was born Oct. 2, 1931, to Ray S. and Pricie (Walters) Shafer. He graduated from Chandler High School in 1949. He served in the United States Air Force.

On Oct. 15, 1950, he married Joann Taylor in Chandler. He worked for the APAC construction company in Tulsa and retired as vice president after 36 years of service. He and his wife owned Chandler Hardware Store.

He was a member of the First Assembly of God Church in Chandler.

Preceding him in death were his parents and one sister.

Survivors include his wife of 54 years, Joann, of the home; one daughter and son-in-law, Pamela and Richard W. Rogers of Little Rock, Ark.; one brother, C. Ray Shafer of Tulsa; one sister, Sue Galbraith of Chandler; one granddaughter and spouse, Stephanie and Barry Bryant of Little Rock, Ark.; and other relatives and friends.

Services will be 2 p.m. Monday, Aug. 22, at the First Assembly of God Church in Chandler with Rev. Doyle Seeley officiating. Burial will follow in Oak Park Cemetery in Chandler.

Services are under the direction of Parks Brothers Funeral Service in Chandler.

Dorothy Jean Smart
Funeral services for Dorothy Jean Smart of Montgomery will be held 10 a.m. Monday, Aug. 22, in the First Baptist Church of Conroe, Texas, with Dr. Cliff Herrington officiating.

Burial will be 10 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 23, in Blackburn Chapel Cemetery, Shawnee.

Mrs. Smart was born Sept. 4, 1926, in Moore and died Aug. 19, 2005, in Conroe, Texas.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Earl Smart; a son, Earl Ray Smart; her parents, Edward and Clara Wellman; and a sister, Georgia Siler.

Dorothy retired from civil service after 30 years.

She served with the Oklahoma Women's Bowling Association and was secretary of the Shawnee Women's Bowling Association for 25 years. She also had belonged to the EGA of America.

In her retirement years, she spent timeless hours enjoying her sew-and-sew group, bowling league, church services, family genealogy and card games.

Dorothy will be remembered being happiest when she was helping others and spending time with family and friends. If you were a youngster and had not experienced one of her hugs, you truly missed out.

She was a stoic figure in her family and could be counted on at a moment's notice. Although her family will forever miss her, they are comforted knowing she is with the Lord and her loving husband and son.

Survivors include her sisters, Gerona Fowler and husband Howard of Shawnee and Carolyn Childers of Conroe, Texas; brothers, Bert Wellman and wife Joyce of Shawnee and Gene Wellman and wife Claudia of Shawnee; and numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Pallbearers are Rocky Wellman, Mickey Childers, Vernon Wellman, Danny Childers, Scott McShan and Dustin Childers. Donations may be made to the Make-a-Wish Foundation.

Billie J. Davis
Billie J. Davis, 74, of Shawnee died Thursday at her home.

She was born July 16, 1931, in Payson, Okla., to Bruce and Tina Mae (Mills) Jack. She graduated from Shawnee High School and Oklahoma Baptist University.

Billie retired as a quality assurance specialist at Tinker Air Force Base.

She was married to Calvin E. Davis on June 18, 1949, in Shawnee. He preceded her in death, as well as a son, Rickey E. Davis, on Aug. 17, 1963; a grandson, Ted W. Cox Jr., died in 1968.

She is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Marsha and Larry Jernigan of Eufaula and Deborah S. and Charlie Jernigan of Greenville, Texas; two grandchildren, Ricki Cox and Jesse Jernigan; two stepgranddaughters, Dacia Jordan and Paula Hyden; two stepgrandsons, Chuck and Samuel Jernigan; one great-granddaughter, Cori Daley; eight stepgreat-grandchildren; one aunt, Sibble Warden of Shawnee; one sister-in-law, Ramona Jack of Norman; two brothers-in-law, Bud and Bonnie Davis and Leonard and Vonda Davis of Shawnee; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Graveside service will be 2 p.m. Monday at Tecumseh Cemetery with Bill Matthews officiating, assisted by Phil Thompson. Walker Funeral Service is in charge of the arrangements.

Pauline Menser
Shawnee resident Pauline Menser, 83, died Tuesday, Aug. 23, at her residence.

She was born July 28, 1922, in Shawnee to Monte Guy and Charlsie Holloway-Blain. She grew up in Shawnee and attended Shawnee schools.

She was married June 11, 1938, in Tecumseh to James Edward Menser. He preceded her in death on Sept. 9, 1982.

She worked as a cashier for several years at F.W. Woolworth and was a secretary for 27 years with Bodard Drilling Company. Pauline was a member of Calvary Baptist church. She enjoyed Bowling and was a member of the Women's International Bowling Congress. Pauline loved and enjoyed her family and her grandchildren in particular.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Survivors include three daughters and sons-in-law, Cleone and Jim Sigman of Tecumseh, Pat and Roger Giddens of Shawnee Edwina and Bob Taylor of Tennessee; ten grandchildren, Cheryl Baptiste, Jimmy Guy Sigman, Jay Donald Sigman, Kathy Durham, Yvonne Crow, Bud Giddens, Paula Allen, Robbie Dunbar, James Taylor and Kenneth Taylor; 20 great-grandchildren; five great-great grandchildren; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Harvel and Jean Blain of Tecumseh and Monte Donald and Janice Blain of Shawnee and a sister and brother-in-law, Joyce and J.R. Long of Dale.

Graveside service will be 3 p.m. Friday at Resthaven Memorial Park Cemetery, Trinity, with the Rev. Leroy Kerbo officiating. Gaskill Funeral Service is directing arrangements.

Billy Wayne Boatman
Shawnee resident Billy Wayne Boatman, 58, died Tuesday, Aug. 23, at the McLoud Nursing Home.

He was born Aug. 14, 1947, in Shawnee to Addison and Louise (Jackson) Boatman.

He attended Bethel Schools. He was a brickmason and a roadgrader operator. He attended Hopewell Baptist Church and had lived in this areal all of his life.

He was preceded in death by his father, brother and nephew.

Survivors include two daughters, Tammy Knipp of Stroud and Tina Boatman of Shawnee; eight grandchildren, Skyler Lantrip, Taylor Davis, Baylie Davis, Seth Knipp, Jeremee Knipp, Christopher Knipp, Chloe Knipp and Teegan Knipp; sister, Claudine Whittet of Shawnee; brother, James Boatman of Bethel Acres; mother, Louise Boatman of Bethel Acres; a number of nieces, nephews and other relatives and two sons-in-law, Chris Knipp and Steve Lantrip.

The casket will remain open until service time and will not be opened afterward.

Service will be 10 a.m. Friday, at Walker Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Bryan Cook officiating. Burial will follow at Fairview Cemetery under the direction of Walker Funeral Service.

Maudie Fay Morgan
Longtime McLean, Texas, resident Maudie Fay Morgan, 82, died Saturday, Aug. 20, in McLoud.

She was born June 22, 1923 in Coal County to Landon and Nora Mason.

She married Charlie Morgan on June 10, 1939 and they moved to McLean, Tx. where they raised eight children.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Charlie Morgan in 1980; one baby daughter in 1942 and one daughter, Joyce Ann in 1997.

Survivors include, three daughters, Eva Rose Hawley (Fred), Springdale Ark., Emma Francis Finn (Tom), Palm Springs, Calif., and Deloris Howell (Pat), McLoud; four sons, Preston Morgan (Julia), Palestine Texas, Loyd Morgan (Kay), Amarillo Texas, Skip Morgan, Pampa Texas, and Dwayne Morgan (Terri), Owasso; one sister, Harty Vista Henry (Dee Troy), Comanche; one brother, Willow Dean Mason (Marlene), Corning Calif.; 24 grandchildren, 40 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

Memorials may be made to Loving Care Hospice, 1940 N. Harrison, Shawnee, OK. 74801 or Church of Christ, McLean, Texas 79057.

Service was held Monday, Aug. 22, at the Church of Christ in McLean, Texas, with Jim Reyna officiating.

Arrangements were under the direction of Bailey-Ware Funeral Home in McLean, Texas.

Alfred Eugene Stewart
Alfred Eugene "Gene" Stewart, 70, of Prague died Tuesday, Aug. 23, in Prague.

Service will be 10 a.m. Friday at Parks Brothers Funeral Chapel will the Rev. Starland Davis officiating. Burial will follow at Gable Cemetery in Prague.

Arrangements are under the direction of Parks Brothers Funeral Home in Prague.
