SMITH Dale F. Smith, 79, of Williamsport, Oh., passed away at his home on Sunday, April 8, 2001. He was born February 10, 1922, the son of Harry and Nellie (Finney) Smith. He served in Merchant Marines in WW II in the Far East Theater. He was a prominent farmer all his life until recently retired. Also served as Monroe Twp. Trustee for many years. He is survived by a brother, Gale (Alice) Smith of Alaska; sister, Evelyn (Leon) Woods of Fla.; sister, Vivian O'Donnell of Columbus; numerous nieces and nephews, grandnieces and nephews of Columbus, Oh., Fla. and Md.; several cousins; special friend, Hazel Scott of Tronton, Oh.; very special friend, neighbor and partner, Dale W. Mowery and family of Circleville. A Funeral service will be held Thursday April 12, 2001 at 1:30 p.m. at the PORTER FUNERAL HOME, Mt. Sterling. Rev. STARLING Armeda Starling, age 81, passed away on April 6, 2001 while vacationing in Mesa, Az. Armeda was born in Beaverdam, Ohio on June 30, 1919. She was raised in Delphos, Ohio and graduated from Bowling Green State University. Armeda was an elementary school teacher who loved each and every one of her students. She taught for thirty-five years, including twenty years at Indian Run Elementary School in Dublin City Schools. She was a member of the Northwest United Methodist Church, Dublin Women's Club, Dublin Arts Council, Ohio and Franklin County, Ohio Retired Teachers Association and Delta Kappa Gamma. She was married to John T. Starling on January 27, 1951 and they enjoyed celebrating their golden anniversary in January. Armeda is predeceased by her parents Clark and Goldie Van Meter and her brother Dale Van Meter. In addition to her husband, John, she is survived by her sons, David and Steven Starling; her daughter, and son-in-law, Susie and Jeff Gafford; her beloved grandsons, A.J. and Jordan Gafford; her sister-in-law, Wanda Van Meter; her brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Rodney and Janet Starling and Byron and Betty Russell; loved ones, Thelma and Armeda Sawmiller and a host of nephews, nieces and wonderful friends. The Starling family would like to thank, Corrine Wires and Della Linson for their kindness during Armeda's illness in Arizona. STUMBO John Stumbo, age 67, of Columbus, died Friday, April 6, 2001 at Doctor's Hospital North. Born October 7, 1933. Survived by wife, Barbara Wells (Stumbo); and his ten children, Darrell (Emmy), John (Cheryl), Donnie (Bridgett), William, Roger (Debbie), James (Joy), John Wells (Jasmine), Brenda Stanley (Wayne), Nina and Beverly and Bonnie Wooten (who was like a daughter to him). Remembering him also are his 31 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren; and many other family and friends. He was preceded in death by his mother Angeline; and sister Mary; brothers Dave, Richard, and Frank Stumbo. John was a loving husband, devoted father, cherished grandfather and so much more. He will be remembered as an icon to many. We love you John, and will keep you in our hearts and thoughts. Survived by wife of 55 years, Loretta Sturgill; sons, Gary (Sandra) Sturgill of Garland, Tex. and Gregory (Martha) Sturgill of Alexandria, Oh.; 3 grandchildren, Jennifer, Jon and Aaron; 2 great-grandchildren; 1 nephew, Don Jones. THOMAS (DOWNEY) Eloise (Downey) Thomas, age 75, of Columbus, went home to be with her Lord Sunday, April 8, 2001. Born July 15, 1925 near Cumberland, Ohio. Preceded in death by her husband William in 1993 and by her brother Robert and sister Verna. Eloise was a devoted wife, committed mother and grandmother and a caring and giving person to everyone she came in contact. She was also an active member of Grace Baptist Church of Westerville. Her survivors include her sons, John (Sharon) and Ron (Renee); daughter, Cheryl (John) Miller; ten grandchildren; sisters, Pauline (Richard) Harmer and Mary (Ray) Gillespie; brother, Harold (Nita) Downey. Funeral service will be held 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, April 11, 2001 at Grace Baptist Church, 3475 Paris Blvd., Westerville with Pastor Murray Murdoch and Pastor William E. Abernathy, Sr. officiating. Burial will follow in Sunset Cemetery.
