Thurman Owens, 78, Marine Corps general
Thurman "Jesse" Owens, 78, who rose to brigadier general in the Marines and later became an administrator at the University of Cincinnati, died Sunday. Gen. Thurman, of Florence, was 78.
He enlisted in the Marines Corps Reserve straight out of high school in 1943 and was commissioned a second lieutenant in 1945, about a month before World War II ended in the Pacific. He was discharged in 1947, after duty that included occupation of China.
He earned a degree from the University of Cincinnati in 1950, where he played football and was captain of the Bearcats during the 1949 season.
He was recalled to active duty during the Korean conflict and ultimately served 23 more years, rising to brigadier general in 1973, when he was named deputy chief of staff for programs at Marine Corps headquarters.
He served three years with the Joint Chiefs of Staff, was commanding officer of the 9th Marines' 1st Battalion and the 26th Marine Regiment's 2nd Battalion in Vietnam, and commanding general at a Marine base in Japan with more than 23,000
military personnel. His decorations included the Bronze Star with Combat "V" and the Legion of Merit with Combat "V."
He followed his older brother, William, into the Marines, and his commitment to the Corps deepened with his brother's death in the Pacific in 1944, said Gen. Owens' daughter, Cheryl Cline, of Ventura, Calif.
A son, Anthony L. Owens of Tucson, Ariz., said: "He was truly a dedicated professional soldier. He loved the Marine Corps almost more than anything else."
After retirement from the Marines, he began work for the University of Cincinnati Foundation. He became director in 1980, then was named executive director of the office of the president in 1984. He retired in 1991.
Cline said her father helped countless students get financial aid for college. "He had gone to college on a football scholarship, and he was very interested in paying back the many things that had helped him get ahead."
Surivovrs also include his wife, Phyllis M. Hemer Owens; another son, William T. Owens of Fairfax, Va.; a sister, Edna DeBerry of Covington; four grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Services will be at noon Thursday at Florence United Methodist Church. Visitation will begin there at 11 a.m. Thursday. Memorials are suggested to University of Cincinnati Athletic Department.

J. James (Big Jim) Murphy was a "people magnet" to begin with, but he also had a foolproof plan to get himself elected president of the Ancient Order of Hibernians in 1966.
He promised the local sons of Ireland a parade for St. Patrick's Day.
His fellow Hibernians remembered it after the election, asking: "Hey, Murph, what about this parade?," said Will O'Neill, assistant grand marshal of this year's parade.
Big Jim Murphy and Michael Murphy -- who despite their shared names weren't related -- and others had actually been tossing around the idea for a St. Patrick's Day parade for some time, but it was Big Jim who did something about it.
He rounded up the necessary city permit for a religious procession and then off the Hibernians went to celebrate St. Patrick's Day late on a Friday afternoon, March 17, 1967.
The men started out about 4 p.m., and as they passed by workplaces, stores and bars other Catholics with Irish roots left their stations to join in.
The swelling parade ended up tying up rush-hour traffic for two hours, Mr. O'Neill said.
Mr. Murphy, 75, of Price Hill died Tuesday.
"He was a very funny man and a tremendous story-teller," said his son, Dan Murphy. And Mr. Murphy had a special knack for making everyone around him feel important, said his son.
Mr. Murphy was a retired sales representative for Janell Inc. and was executive director of Unit Masonry Association for 23 years. He also had served as a bailiff at the Hamilton County Courthouse.
Mr. Murphy was also active in the Elder Alumni Association and Price Hill Old Timers, was Xavier University Alumni president in 1974 and, as an offensive lineman, was inducted into the Xavier University Athletic Hall of Fame in 1994.
His wife, Mary Suzanne Murphy, preceded him in death.
