Kevin Goemmer, horse racing caller
Kevin Goemmer became one of the tri-state's best-known horse racing callers.
As recently as last week, he was announcing races at Turfway Park in Florence, filling in for regular announcer Mike Battaglia. Tuesday, he died of an apparent heart attack at the age of 48.
"Kevin truly had in his heart a great passion for horse racing," said Turfway President Bob Elliston.
Mr. Goemmer will be remembered for his patented race calls.
"A plodder would 'see 'em all,'" said John Engelhardt, publicity director of River Downs in Cincinnati and a longtime friend. "A pacesetter was always 'showing his heels' to the field."
Mr. Goemmer started working as an announcer in 1980 at River Downs, where he also served as director of publicity and assistant general manager until 1995, when he left to call races at Arlington Park, Hawthorne and Sportsman's Park, all in Chicago.
He returned to Kentucky in 2000 to take a position at Charlson Broadcast Technologies in Erlanger as director of sales and marketing. Charlson provides graphics for in-house and simulcast products at race tracks.
He continued to fill in as an announcer, however.
"He just loved to announce the horse racing, and he's always been a part of it," said a son, Jason Goemmer.
Mr. Goemmer is survived by his wife of 28 years, Deborah Goemmer, and a second son, Justin.
Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday and Allison and Rose Funeral Home, Taylor Mill. Visitation will be at the funeral home from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday. Memorials are suggested to the Kevin Goemmer Memorial Fund and may be made at any branch of Fifth Third Bank.
