Richard Maloney, 'Mr. Softee'
During the winter months he was Richard Maloney. But April to November, he was "Mr. Softee."
For 35 years, Mr. Maloney drove the familiar Mr. Softee ice cream trucks. At its apex, his Mr. Softee empire had seven trucks operating from Florence to Norwood.
Mr. Maloney began his career driving an ice cream truck for his uncle. He later bought one of his uncle's trucks and struck out on his own, then added trucks and hired other people to drive them. Even after Mr. Maloney was diagnosed with cancer last fall and began chemotherapy treatments, he kept up his rounds. He'd made it out about 10 times this year with the help of his wife, Phyllis, before he died Sunday at Christ Hospital in Cincinnati.
"Some people are just meant to do certain things," she said. "He was meant to drive that truck."
Phyllis Maloney said her husband was as kind as the name of his product implied, serving thousands upon thousands of customers along the way.
"If a senior citizen wanted a $2 sundae, and they only had $1, he didn't say anything," she said. "He was like that with young children and the handicapped. Police never paid and firemen paid very little."
His kindness wasn't limited to just humans. He would regularly fix a single scoop cone for dogs he met along his route.
Other survivors include a brother, Hugh Crawford of Foster, and a sister, Shirley Minella of Dayton, Ohio.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Radel Funeral Home, Newport.
