Bishop Jasper Jaye Phillips, 87
Bishop Jasper Jaye Phillips was a lively, enthusiastic preacher who knew how to get people excited about the Lord.
He was born in 1916 in Metter, Ga., and moved with his family to Cincinnati when he was 8. He joined the First Pentecostal Church in 1936 and became its pastor 14 years later. Until he became sick three years ago, he never missed a Sunday preaching.
Bishop Phillips died Wednesday. He was 87.
Nellie Bess, a close family friend, said he had a deep, resonant singing voice and knew how to use it.
"When he said something, you remembered it -- he commanded respect without demanding it," she said.
"For years, we've broadcast Sunday services on WCIN, and our opening song was 'I'm Glad to Be in the Service One More Time,'" said Bess. "And Bishop would say "one more time' like you wouldn't believe. Even the little children, when they'd see him, they'd say, 'Daddy, daddy! There goes 'One More Time.'"
Under his pastorate, the church moved to a new building at 3041 Gilbert Ave. and again in 1973 to its present site, the former Isaac Wise Center at 3771 Reading Rd. in North Avondale. He was appointed to the office of district elder in 1959 and to the bishopric in 1989.
In 1983, he founded the Zion Temple Christian Academy, which has a current enrollment of about 200 children.
Survivors include his wife of 67 years, Beulah; a son, Ronald, of Cincinnati; a brother, Rufus Phillips, of Cincinnati; four grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.
