John Thomas, church leader
John E. Thomas, who as a Union Baptist Church leader helped bring about the Page Towers downtown high-rise for low-income residents, died Friday. He was 87.
Mr. Thomas was a decorated World War II veteran and an accountant for the Veterans Administration for 33 years.
He was also treasurer at Union Baptist for several years, helped manage the construction of a new Union Baptist church building, and helped develop Page Tower as the first president of the Union Baptist Pioneer Housing Corp. A garden has been dedicated to Mr. Thomas next to Page Towers to commemorate his work to develop the project.
Survivors include his wife of 62 years, Sue M. Thomas; his son, Roger J. Thomas; two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Funeral service is set for noon Thursday at Union Baptist Church, 405 W. Seventh St., West End. Visitation begins there at 11 a.m. Thursday. Burial will be in the Spring Grove Cemetery.
Renfro and Piper Funeral Service is in charge of arrangements.

Billie Becker, coached softball into her 80s
Billie Becker, a strong-willed and and independent woman who was still coaching softball into her mid-80s, died March 10 at Hospice of Cincinnati after a lengthy illness.
She was 86.
Mrs. Becker, of Loveland, had coached the Dingbats softball team for 17 years and just last year led the team to a 10-0 record and the championship.
Mrs. Becker loved and played many sports in her lifetime and was extremely competitive in everything she did, said family members in a written statement.
"She was quick to let everyone know what the rules were, making sure no one got away with anything, whether it be playing cards, ping-pong or board games," they wrote.
She and her late husband, Harry, were married for 62 years.
Survivors include four children, Marilyn, Sandy, Christy and Jack; 10 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.
Services have been held.
Memorial donations may be made to Hospice of Cincinnati, 4310 Cooper Road, Cincinnati 45242 or to St. Jude Children's Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, Tenn. 38105.
