Vivian Schulte, made meals for the homeless
Vivian Louise Schulte, 78, of Newport, an accomplished cook and warm-hearted volunteer who prepared gourmet-quality meals at Newport's Hosea House soup kitchen, died Wednesday at St. Luke Hospital West in Florence.
She was also a long-time volunteer at the Brighton Center in Newport.
Mrs. Schulte cooked at several Newport restaurants before becoming the first cook at Hosea House when the soup kitchen opened in 1991. She continued to cook there until several months ago, when illness forced her retirement.
"She cooked at Hosea House every day and it was her own personal ministry, her way of doing something nice for people," said Karen Yates, executive director of Hosea House.
"She didn't just prepare sandwiches and soup, she cooked full meals that were delicious. She took a lot of pride in her cooking and in what she served to the homeless and hungry."
Mrs. Schulte also did other charity work.
When the Brighton Center had to close its doors for lack of money many years ago, "she held fund-raisers to re-open the doors and they've never been closed since," noted Yates. "She was always looking to see what she could do for somebody else."
Mrs. Schulte was a member of St. John Anglican Church in Dayton. Her husband, Thomas Schulte, died in 1984.
Survivors include sisters, Shirley Tucker, Barbara Shields, Betty Harrison, Ramona Stanfield and Belva Deaton, all of Newport; a brother, Arthur Shields of Newport; three grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Mass will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. John Anglican Church. Visitation will begin there at 9 a.m. Saturday.

Jayne Spain, corporate pioneer
Jayne Spain, who rose to the upper echelons of the business world at a time when there were very few women in corporate board rooms, died March 1.
In 1971, she became the nation's highest-ranking female presidential appointee, when she became vice chairman of the U.S. Civil Service Commission. She commuted to Washington, D.C., during the week, returning to Cincinnati on the weekends.
She had risen to president and CEO of the Alvey-Ferguson conveyer manufacturing company in 1952 and shepherded the acquisition of Alvey-Ferguson by Litton Industries (now Northrop Grumman).
She went on to serve on the board of Litton Industries, Beatrice Foods and Ohio National Life Insurance.
During her career in business, she also served as senior vice president at Gulf Oil.
Mrs. Spain, of Indian Hill, died Saturday at Sunrise Assisted Living Center of Kenwood. She was 81.
When she was named to the board of Litton, only one other woman in the country was on the board of a firm of that size.
During the 1960s Mrs. Spain served on the President's Committee for the Handicapped, the Ohio Governor's Commission on the Status of Women and the board of the Cincinnati Children's Medical Center.
She was a passionate advocate for employment of the blind, and made a point of hiring one blind worker for every 10 employees in her company, her family said.
Spain was awarded at least seven honorary doctorates, and served as a visiting professor at George Washington University.
In 1989, she retired to her Indian Hill home. She was inducted into the "Greater Cincinnati Business Hall of Fame" in 1994.
She is survived by her husband, John Autis Spain; sons Jeff and Jon, and five grandchildren.
Private services were held Thursday at the Indian Hill Episcopal-Presbyterian Church.
The family suggests that gifts in her memory be given to Recordings for the Blind, National Headquarters, 20 Roszel Road, Princeton, N.J. 08540.
