Mary McCafferty Rice, defender of the faith
Mary McCafferty Rice, 94, of Lakeside Park, Ky., active in many Catholic church organizations and charities, died Friday.
She was a member of Cathedral Basilica of the Assumption in Covington and Blessed Sacrament Church in Fort Mitchell, and a founding member of both the St. Gemma Guild and the Thomas More College Ladies Auxiliary.
"She was a real defender of the faith," said Mrs. Rice's daughter, Mary Claire Rice of Lakeside Park. "She had a lot of trust and love in God.
Mary McCafferty Rice's husband, Bernard Louis Rice, died in 1993.
Other survivors include sons, Bill Rice of Florence, Glenn Rice of Fort Mitchell and Jay Rice of Lakeside Park; daughters, Sue Rice Schulte of Marco Island, Fla., and Lynn Rice Toner of Fort Wright; brothers, James McCafferty of Fort Wright, and Richard McCafferty of Fort Thomas; a sister, Betty McCafferty Graff of Fort Mitchell; 22 grandchildren and 26 great-grandchildren.
Mass of Christian burial will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Cathedral Basilica of the Assumption, Covington. Visitation will begin there at 9 a.m. Thursday.

'Bud' Houliston, area civic leader
George B. "Bud" Houliston Jr., owner of G.B. Houliston Co. in Cincinnati, died Sunday at St. Luke Hospital East in Fort Thomas. He was 70.
He served on the tri-state board of the YMCA and helped get the Campbell County YMCA in Fort Thomas built in 1966. He was also a former vice president of the Cincinnati Rotary Club and a past president of the Fort Thomas Lions Club.
"He was very civic-minded, always trying to give something to other people. He treated people with respect," said his son, Rick Houliston of Fort Thomas.
Mr. Houliston is also survived by his wife, Joan; sons, David Houliston of West Chester, and Rob Houliston of Fort Thomas; a sister, Tippie Kennedy of Cincinnati; and nine grandchildren.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at St. Andrew's Episcopal Church, Fort Thomas. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Dobbling Funeral Home, Fort Thomas. Memorials are suggested to the charity of the donor's choice.

Clyde Janson, construction superintendent
Clyde Jack Janson, who was project superintendent for the creation of the Interstate 71 corridor through Norwood, died Dec. 6. He was 71.
The I-71 project through Norwood was the most expensive project per mile of its time, requiring redirection of Duck Creek and an active railway bridge, as well as work on dozens of ramps, retaining walls, side streets sewer mains and water mains.
As project superintendent during a 34-year career with Foley Construction Co., he also supervised construction of the water intake system for the California Water Works and for construction of a large underground tunnel linking the plant to a pumping station below the river's surface on the Kentucky side of the Ohio River. His final assignment was a $30 million wastewater treatment plant in Northern Kentucky in 1983.
He is survived by his wife, Marlyn, five children, and 14 grandchildren.

REV. WILLIAM LAWRENCE JAEKLE, 91, who served in Roman Catholic parishes in the Cincinnati area from 1938 to 1946, died Sunday in Versailles. Father Jaekle retired as pastor emeritus of St. Denis in Versailles in 1981. He also served as associate pastor at the Resurrection parish in Price Hill and the former St. Matthew parish in Norwood. Marie Johnson, former tennis champ
Marie H. Johnson, who was a junior women's tennis champion in Cincinnati and a University of Cincinnati graduate, died earlier this month at her home in Michigan.
Mrs. Johnson, 87, taught kindergarten and was active in several local and state organizations in the Jackson, Mich., area. They included the Women's Auxiliary of the Jackson Medical Association, Junior Welfare League and Michigan Heart Association.
"She had a knack for fun, a great sense of humor, and refused to be defeated by life's blows," said stepdaughter Anne J. White of Fort Thomas, Ky.
Mrs. Johnson was also a golfer who proudly made a hole in one at the Country Club of Jackson. She also loved gardening, spending summers in Northern Michigan at her cottages and traveling. Three months ago, she went to Paris, Vienna and Prague with her daughters.
Mrs. Johnson was preceded in death by her husbands, Dr. Tom Baker Thompson and Claude W. Johnson, both of whom once lived in Fort Thomas, Ky.
She is also survived by her children, Carolyn O'Neil of Lake Forest, Ill., Susan Schaffer of Jackson; T. Stephen Thompson of Lake Forest; Gail Kraai of Jackson; stepsons Robert Johnson of Melbourne, Ky., and Douglas Johnson of Cincinnati, step-daughters Dixie Root of Guilford, Conn., Liza Love of Windsor, Conn., Ginger Herndon of Cedar Falls, Iowa, Anne White, Jane Smith, and Nancy Baker of Fort Thomas; 10 grandchildren; 26 step grandchildren; and seven step great- grandchildren.
