Lloyd W. Hargis served his country
At only about 100 pounds Lloyd W. Hargis was small but mighty and packed a lot of living into his 88 years, said his wife Ruth V. Hargis.
Mr. Hargis helped fight the Japanese during World War II, helped his sons as Boy Scouts deliver clothing and canned food to the poorer areas of Kentucky and worked at a wine cellar for 38 years.
"He led an interesting life," said Mrs. Hargis.
Mr. Hargis, of Fort Wright, Ky., died at 7:43 a.m. Tuesday at Rosedale Manor Nursing Home, Covington after fighting cancer for seven years.
He was a supervisor in the bottling shop for Meier's Wine Cellars, Silverton, Ohio, and served in the Navy in the Philippines and New Guinea in World War II.
During the war, his unit was one of the first to hit the islands. Mr. Hargis ran a bulldozer at night, hiding from the Japanese, to build runways and huts for the planes and ground troops that would follow.
He was extremely proud to have served and was patriotic.
"If you had a flag, you wouldn't dare let it touch the floor," said Mrs. Hargis.
Ironically, even his marriage had a patriotic touch.
He and Mrs. Hargis married on July 4, 1941. Because it was difficult to take time off from work in those days without being fired, they married on the Fourth, a Friday, Mrs. Hargis said.
Mr. Hargis was a good father, a good provider and was congenial.
"He loved to tell stories. If you would listen, he would tell you stories all night," Mrs. Hargis said.
"No matter what you talked about he could tell you a story."
In addition to his wife, survivors include sons, W. Michael Hargis and Robert L. Hargis, both of Fort Wright; and four grandchildren.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Middendorf-Bullock Funeral Home, Covington.
Visitation will be from 8:30 to 9:50 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home.
Burial will be in St. John Cemetery, Fort Mitchell.

Marjorie Daniel, linked kids to art
Marjorie Gibson Daniel combined her love for children and art with a life dedicated to volunteer service - and to her daughter and grandchildren.
Mrs. Daniel, 83, died Friday at her home.
"My mother was the quintessential grandmother, godmother and aunt, and a wonderful, dedicated mother," said daughter Debbie Long.
Mrs. Daniel served as a volunteer the Convalescent Hospital for Children, the Bodmans' Widows Home, the Three Arts Fund and the Babies Milk Fund. She also donated her time to General Hospital, now University Hospital.
She was a member of the Indian Hill Garden Club, the Camargo Club and the University Club, and was a past member of the Federated Garden Club.
