Sara Lambing, started Orange Ribbons
Sara Ellen Lambing, the woman who spearheaded the nationally known Operation Orange Ribbon support group during the Persian Gulf War, died last Friday of inoperable cancer.
She was 57.
"I guess I will always miss her," said her husband, Frank Lambing, of Delhi Township. "I'm pretty good until I have to start talking or thinking about it."
Lambing supported his wife's crusade during the two years that she ran the operation out of her home and later at an autoworkers union hall.
There were times when she didn't come home, Lambing said, and he would join her at a hotel room donated by the Ramada Inn so she wouldn't have to drive back and forth.
"When she goes into something, she goes all the way," Lambing said.
"During that time the Ford Union Hall in Sharonville gave her a room to use in the basement and Skyline Chili and Swallen's set up TVs and telephones and the Ramada Inn gave her a room to sleep in. Many times I'd come home from work at midnight and she's still busy over there. I told her 'it feels like I'm dating you again'.
"It was really a passion for her."
Mrs. Lambing started Operation Orange Ribbon in August 1990 to support her son, Tim Young, who was stationed on an aircraft carrier in the Persian Gulf, and other soldiers.
The group, which urged people to display orange ribbons to show support for troops, began as a one-person support unit for families with loved ones in the Middle East. Within six months, it grew into a corporation with a board of directors, a T-shirt shop, more than 1,000 Greater Cincinnati members, 100 satellite chapters across the country.
In a year, the housewives, husbands and students raised more than $180,000.
The group donated $100,000 to the American Red Cross, which distributed it to area
military families facing financial crisis because of the war. Another $7,500 was given to the Vietnam Veterans Chapter 10 to build a shelter for homeless veterans. More than $6,000 was spent on postage, sending food and toiletries to service personnel over seas.
Mrs. Lambing returned to her job as a school bus driver and had been driving a route for the Oak Hills School District since 1999.
Mrs. Lambing said she was also proud of an honor she received in 1982 when the group, Parents With out Partners, named her Single Par ent of the Year. They were both di vorcees when they met through that group in 1976. She already had three children from a previous marriage.
Other survivors: a brother, Ed ward Daniels of Hillsboro; sons Tim Young, stationed at the Mayport Na val Station in Jacksonville, Fla., and Bill Young of Cincinnati; a daughter, Barbara Ann Young of Cincinnati; and three grandchildren.
Memorial service: 7 p.m. today at the Vineyard Community Church, Century Circle, Springdale, with a reception following. Memorials: American Cancer Society.
