Walter R. Mason, philanthropist
An inventor who revolutionized the plaster molds and ceramics industry, Walter R. Mason used his royalty monies to help disadvantaged children get basic needs such as braces or a college education.
He died on the Fourth of July at age 80.
"He was always for the underdog," said John L. Mason, his brother. "He was a quintessential Democrat and he put his money where his mouth was."
While working for Hoge Warren & Zimmerman, a Cincinnati roofing company, Mr. Mason developed and patented a unique machine that produced a continuous flow of water and plaster. It produced plaster molds and ceramic products of a higher quality than other methods.
The machine, named Mason Flo, was sold the world over and used for making ceramic bathroom fixtures in China and ornamental plaster houses at an British factory. Mr. Mason displayed one of the miniature houses, dubbed Mason Manor, in his own home.
The Cincinnati native graduated from Walnut Hills High School and the University of Cincinnati, with a degree in mechanical engineering. During World War II, he worked as an engineer at the Chrysler Aeronautical Plant in Chicago, helping design engines for the B17 Bomber.
But it was Mr. Mason's philanthropy that leaves a living legacy. Mr. Mason helped kids make ends meet and provided college tuition for one youngster who now teaches at a Virginia high school.
Mr. Mason also leaves his wife, Joyce Mason, and a sister, Peggy Sanders.
Services are private, and they are being arranged by Elden A. Good Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to the Stroke Association of America.
