Sister Mary Christine was teacher, musician
Sister of Charity of Cincinnati Mary Christine Falsetto knew from childhood that she wanted to become a nun.
"One day, before I entered high school, a group of youngsters and I were roller skating," she once wrote about her initial introduction to religious orders during her childhood in Trinidad, Colo.
"In the midst of this fun, I suddenly saw two black-robed figures. 'What are they'? I cried and someone said, 'Those are Sisters.' 'Now that's what I'm going to be!' I said.
"Everyone laughed because at the time the idea was preposterous. But that was the seed, and every day for the next six years I prayed fervently to be a Sister."
Sister Mary Christine, a Sister of Charity for 60 years, died Sunday at Mother Margaret Hall nursing home in Delhi. She was 82.
Sister Mary Christine earned her bachelor's degree in English from the College of Mount St. Joseph, Delhi, and a master's in education from Creighton University in Omaha, Neb. She taught for 36 years.
She began teaching at St. Gabriel School in Glendale in 1941. She also taught at St. Peter School in downtown Cincinnati before heading west where she became the principal at St. Mary High School in Albuquerque, then assistant principal at Elizabeth Seton High School in South Holland, Ill.
"Sister Mary Christine was known never to complain," said Sister of Charity Francis Adelaide Zink, a friend.
"She always said it never did any good anyway, so why complain? And she loved to walk."
Music also was a part of Sister Mary Christine's life. She played and taught the guitar, played the organ, and was involved in several choirs.
She is survived by one brother, Frank Falsetto of Trinidad Colo.
Mass of Christian burial is at 3 p.m. Wednesday at the Sisters of Charity Motherhouse, 5900 Delhi Road, Delhi. Visitation begins there at 2 p.m. Wednesday. Gilligan Funeral Home is handling arrangements.
