JOHN EDWARD SULLIVAN, 50, of Higginsport, Ohio, died Monday. Mr. Sullivan was a machinist. No services are planned. Arrangements: Cahall Funeral Home, Ripley.

Arthur Crockett, designer, WWII navigator

Arthur Crockett of Anderson Township, an industrial and furniture designer who also was on e of the youngest Air Force navigators of World War II, died Wednesday. He was 74.

Mr. Crockett was president of Design Associates Inc., a commercial interior design firm.

He enjoyed aviation and mathematics and became the youngest navigator in his squadron at 19.

He was graduated in 1949 from the University of Cincinnati College of Applied Arts with a degree in industrial design.

After working eight years for Backus Brothers, a large Midwestern hospitality design company, he joined A.M. Kinney, an engineering and architectural firm, in 1957. He served as the firm's design director for 18 years.

He formed Design Associates in 1965 and never lost the personal touch, said Joe Bender, corporate specialist with Seabrook Wall coverings.

"Even when I was a novice sales rep, Art was never too busy to take the time to inquire how you were doing personally," Bender said.

Mr. Crockett leaves two children, Kathie Pendell of Mason and Dale of Mount Carmel; three grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Services are set for 10 a.m. Wednesday at Love and Faith Fellowship Church, 3946 Hopper Hill Road, Cherry Grove. Visitation is from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at T.P. White Funeral Home in Mount Washington . Memorials are suggested to Love and Faith Fellowship Church Building Fund.

ALAN Gardner BAKER, of Rochester, N.Y., formerly of Finneytown, died Friday. He was a scientist with the government systems division of Eastman Kodak. He was involved with the Ohio Tobacco Festival in Ripley and served as grand marshall of the festival's 1998 opening day parade. Ernest Harper, 1st kidney recipient

Ernest P. Harper of Anderson Township, the first kidney transplant recipient at the University of Cincinnati Medical Center, died Saturday from congestive heart failure. He was 69.

Mr. Harper made local medical history when he received a kidney on Dec. 11, 1967, donated by his sister, Beth Moore. The operation was performed by Dr. Wesley Alexander.

Over the years, Mr. Harper frequently talked to transplant patients at the hospital, and offered encouragement to those awaiting transplants.

Mr. Harper served in the U.S. Army from 1948 to 1957, and worked 28 years for the Cincinnati Police Division be fore retiring in May, 1986. After retirement from the police division, he continued to work as a security guard at the Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport before retiring after suffering a stroke in June 1994.

He was an avid gardener, and enjoyed raising tomatoes, peppers, cabbage and other vegetables.

Survivors include his wife, Joan; two sons, Rick and Kevin; one daughter, Kim Beuke; one brother, Fred; three sisters, Jane Dotsey, Ginger Miller and Beth Moore; two grandchildren and several nephews and nieces.

Visitation: noon Thursday at T.P. White & Sons Funeral Home at 2050 Beechmont Ave., Mount Washington . Graveside services immediately following visitation at Arlington Memorial Gardens.

Father Buschmiller was teacher

The Rev. Robert J. Buschmiller, who served as a Roman Catholic priest in the Cincinnati and Dayton areas more than 56 years, died Saturday. He was 79.

Most recently, Father Buschmiller served as associate pastor at St. Cecilia parish in Oakley, moving there in 1984 after 13 years as pastor of St. Andrew parish in Milford.

He also had a long, distinguished career in local higher education.

Having studied at St. Gregory and Mount St. Mary of the West Seminaries, and earning a graduate degree from the Athenaeum of Ohio, Father Buschmiller was ordained to the priesthood on May 20, 1944 by then Archbishop John T. McNicholas.

He served as dean of the College of Liberal Arts of the Athenaeum of Ohio, starting in 1967.

Before that he had been at the former St. Mary Seminary in Norwood for 18 years, first as an instructor and later as director of Graduate Program and Summer School Studies and coordinator of studies.

In the late 1940s, Father Buschmiller began doctoral studies in Fribourg, Switzerland, and later continued studies in philosophy at the Angelicum in Rome.

He served as associate pastor at St. James of the Valley in Wyoming; at St. Louis and St. Mary parishes in Cincinnati; at St. Mary parish in Dayton and at St. Ann parish in Hamilton.

He was first appointed Judge of Tribunal in 1954, and reappointed in 1967 and 1971.

Father Buschmiller is survived by a sister, Jeanne Ryan.

Reception of the body will take place at St. Cecilia Church, Oakley, Thursday at 4 p.m. The funeral Mass will be Friday, 11 a.m. at St. Cecilia Church.
