J. Howard Sundermann worked
way up to Westerman president
J. Howard Sundermann of Kenwood was "part of the greatest generation - the generation whose lives were interrupted by the Great Depression and World War II," says Mr. Sundermann's son, Thomas Sundermann.
"During the Depression, my father had to drop out of high school at age 16 and go to work to earn money for his family," noted Thomas Sundermann. "Later, just as he was starting to raise his own family, World War II broke out and he had to go into the Army. But he found a way to overcome all the obstacles in his life and become a success."
Mr. Sundermann, 87, who died Thursday, rose through the ranks of Westerman Print Co. to become president of the firm that counted Procter & Gamble Co. as its main customer.
After his father lost his job during the Depression, Mr. Sundermann dropped out of Elder High School at 16 and went to work as a clothing salesman at Mabley & Carew department store in downtown Cincinnati.
"He never received any more formal education after leaving Elder, and he always bemoaned it," his son said. "He made sure his two sons received a good education."
Thomas Sundermann of Mount Lookout, an investment counselor, and his brother, J. Howard Sundermann Jr. of Montgomery, an Ohio 1st District Court of Appeals judge, are both graduates of Notre Dame University.
Mr. Sundermann went to work as a salesman for Westerman Print in 1940 and worked his way up, being named president in 1964.
"He was very, very focused and also worked very hard to be one of the nattiest dressers you've ever seen," his son said. "He shined his shoes every day and made sure he had a razor-sharp crease in his French cuffs."
Mr. Sundermann retired from Westerman Print in 1982, and he and his wife of 59 years, Mavis Sundermann, who survives him, began spending their winters in Jupiter, Fla., and their summers in Kenwood.
"His big hobby was golf," said Thomas Sundermann, who said he felt compelled to add that "while he was quite a golfer, he was not necessarily a good golfer."
Other survivors include six grandchildren and a great-grandson.
Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. today at the Thomas-Justin Memorial Funeral Home, 7500 Montgomery Rd., Kenwood. Funeral services will be private.
