Sam Droganes, fireworks/candy shop owner
For 63 years Sam Droganes operated Sam's Confectionary, also known as the Premier Firew orks Co., in Covington.
His father, Soterios Delta Droganes, began the business on Madison Avenue in Covington in 1918. Later, the business, which sold candy and ice cream and later fireworks, moved to its permanent location in the 200 block of Pike Street.
"The original sign hangs until this day," said a daughter, Laura Roach of Park Hills, Ky. "My father didn't know a stranger. When people talk to me about my father, they tell me how lucky I am."
Mr. Droganes, 82, of Fort Mitchell, died at 1:52 p.m. Wednesday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South in Edgewood, Ky.
Other survivors include his wife, Laura Grout Droganes; a daughter, Janet Droganes of Covington; three grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

'Jimmy' Woods in Black Golfers Hall of Fame
James "Jimmy" Woods Jr., a member of the Black Golfers Hall of Fame and the Hamilton County Sports Hall of Fame, died Tuesday at his Avondale home. He was 80.
Mr. Woods won his first tournament at 16, but the color barrier kept him out of competition golf for more than 30 years before he began making his mark in Cincinnati amateur tournaments in his late 40s.
His wins included the Greater Cincinnati Public Links, the Metropolitan Seniors Championship and the Men's Senior Amateur Championship.
Last year, The Post named him to its list of the Greater Cincinnati area's top 100 sports figures for the 20th century.
Mr. Woods, who worked for nearly 40 years as a railroad dining car waiter, started the Jimmy Woods Golf Foundation in 1980 to help young golfers. In 1995, the Jimmy Woods Jr. Learning Center was dedicated at Avon Field Golf Course.
Survivors include his longtime companion, Bernice Moreland; a daughter, Barbara Allen of Cincinnati; two stepsons, Leroy and Elex Campbell; James and Marjean Moreland, whom he helped raise; a sister, Rose Richard, of Winton Terrace; and a brother, Wilbur Woods.

Mary Elizabeth Johnson loved kids
Mary Elizabeth Johnson tended to the needs of Northern Kentucky children for 35 years as they shopped for their hearts' desires in the aisles of Johnny's Toys in Latonia.
At Christmas her husband would sometimes pitch in by playing Santa Claus while Mrs. Johnson handled business in the store's layaway department.
"She loved kids and she loved to work, and she never would stop," said her husband, William Edgar Johnson of Taylor Mill. "I used to even call her 'busy bee' because she was always doing something."
Mrs. Johnson, 75, of Taylor Mill, died at 1:13 a.m. Friday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South in Edgewood.
Other survivors include sons, Richard S. Johnson of Morning View and Terry D. Johnson of Taylor Mill; four grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Sister Thomas Miriam Kane was educator
Sister of Charity of Cincinnati Thomas Miriam Kane knew at a young age she wanted to be a member of the order, mostly because they served as "role models of faith," she later wrote.
She became a Sister of Charity and went on to be a role model of both faith and academic guidance.
Sister Kane, 86, died Saturday at Mother Margaret Hall Nursing Home in Delhi Township.
Originally from Cleveland, she earned her bachelor's degree in English from the College of Mount St. Joseph in Delhi Township and her master's from Xavier University. Afterward, she served as a teacher and principal for 51 years at schools in Ohio, Michigan, Illinois (Chicago) and New Mexico.
In 1986, Sister Kane became an English professor and archivist at the College of Mount St. Joseph and served in that capacity until her retirement in 1989. She was a member of the North Central Association, the National Association of Secondary School Principals and the National Catholic Education Association.
Survivors include two nephews, both of Cleveland.

Andrew DeMar, P&G executive, avid reader
Andrew R. DeMar, of Hyde Park, retired senior visualization manager for the Procter & Gamble Co., died Sunday at Jewish Hospital of complications from leukemia. He was 66.
DeMar worked for P&G almost 43 years, beginning in 1956 and holding various positions in advertising until his retirement in 1999.
He was active in local and national charitable organizations, serving on the board for the Resident Home for the Mentally Retarded and as national president of the Children's International Summer Village, a worldwide organization founded in Cincinnati to support exchange student programs.
Family members said DeMar was "an avid reader, and particularly loved classical music, travel and history ... and loved to share these passions with others."
A native of Irvington, N.J., he earned the Eagle Award in Boy Scout, was graduated from Princeton University, and served in the U.S. Air Force and Air Force Reserve for 15 years.
Survivors include his wife, Caroline Stoddard Fairley; three children, Dr. Andrew R. DeMar, Jr., Patricia Hauver and Glenn E. DeMar; two stepchildren, Catherine Cantey and Laura Drummond, and three grandchildren.
His first wife, Geraldine Potter DeMar, preceded him in death in 1976.
Memorial service: 4:30 p.m. Monday in the Cincinnati Room at the Cincinnati Museum Center at Union Terminal, 1301 Western Avenue.
Memorials may be made to the Nature Conservancy, 6375 Riverside Drive, Dublin, Ohio, 43017; the Cincinnati Fine Arts Fund or the Cincinnati Parks Foundation.
