Willard Hess, world's armored-car supplier

Willard C. Hess, who helped build a local firm into an internationally-known armored-car supplier to presidents, kings and sheiks, died Sunday. He was 94.

He, along with close friends and family members, bought a 50-year-old maker of hearses and ambulances in 1942 to form Hess & Eisenhardt Manufacturing.

It made a variety of speciality vehicles, including 20 custom Cadillacs built as "harem cars" for King Ibn Saud of Saudi Arabia, Mr. Hess told Butler County's Antique Car Club in 1976. Those cars had one-way glass so occupants could see out, but not be seen. With car air-conditioning unavailable, each vehicle had two electric fans to cool the king's wives.

In 1951, aides to President Truman, concerned about a 1950 attack on Blair House where Truman was living while the White House was renovated, asked Mr. Hess to design a car to withstand a similar attack.

That began a long tradition of building armored cars for use around the world. Since then, Hess & Eisenhardt limousines have gone to every U.S. president as well as 60 international heads of state and countless diplomats and business people.

Once Mr. Hess was done adding armour to the presidential limousines, they were virtually soundproof and President Lyndon  Johnson didn't like that.

"Bugging mikes became an obsession with LBJ," Mr. Hess said, because  Johnson "couldn't tell whether crowds outside were cheering or jeering."

The firm also built a special armored car for long-time FBI director J. Edgar Hoover and for England's Queen Elizabeth II.

Three days after President John F. Kennedy's assassination in 1963, Mr. Hess also was called to Washington to consult with the Warren Commission on an investigation into the death.

Mr. Hess's company was sold in 1982 and now operates as O'Gara Hess & Eisenhardt.

Mr. Hess is survived by his wife, Adele Amig Hess; a daughter, Jane Hess Walker of Wyoming; two sons, John Daniel Hess of Detroit and Willard C. Hess Jr. of Milford, Mich.; eight grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 3 p.m. today in Wyoming Presbyterian Church, 325 Wyoming Ave. Hodapp Funeral Home, 7401 Vine St., Carthage, is in charge.

Memorials may be made to the Willard C. Hess Memorial Fund of the Wyoming School Foundation, 401 Crescent Ave., Wyoming; or Dan Beard Council, Boy Scouts of America, 2341 Victory Parkway, Cincinnati.

Harry L. Meacham was an electrical engineer who worked on the design of more than 90 large construction projects in Greater Cincinnati, including at the University of Cincinnati, Jewish Hospital, Procter & Gamble Co. and the Westin Hotel.

Mr. Meacham, 69, of Florence, died Thursday at his home.

Born in Indiana, Mr. Meacham traveled down the East Coast in the 1950s as an engineer with a gas pipeline company.

He eventually relocated to Cincinnati and worked as an electrical contractor for Becker Electric until he retired in 1980, said his son, Dr. James E. Meacham of Indianapolis.

After retiring, he continued to work as a contractor on a freelance basis.

He pushed for and helped raise money to build a heliport at University Hospital.

"He was a quiet man - a loner is the best way I could put it," his son said. "He was a fairly quiet, detail-oriented planner. . . . He loved drawing and drafting. He worked at a drafting table probably right up until he died."

Mr. Meacham was a Coast Guard veteran of World War II.
