Milton Hutson, war veteran, 'loved to work'
The things Milton Conner Hutson cherished most were the ones he found early in l ife and nurtured for much of his 83 years. He died Thursday.
The resident of Sunman, Ind., married his childhood sweetheart, Doris, who was 13 years younger and who grew up three doors down from his own childhood home.
The two were married in St. John's United Church of Christ in Penntown, Ind. It was the church both attended as children, where Mr. Hutson did maintenance work in his retirement and where his funeral services will be held Monday.
Even during World War II, when Mr. Hutson was stationed first in the Aleutian Islands and later in France and Germany, he wrote often to Doris and her brother. He had many stories of his years abroad, guarding German prisoners-of-war.
Returning home to Indiana, Mr. Hutson worked for Hillenbrand Industries, hauling goods and driving the company's inter-office bus. After retiring in 1981, he worked part-time at the Sunman IGA.
"If he could have, he would have been busy until he drew his last breath," Mrs. Hutson said. "He loved to work."
In addition to his wife, Mr. Hutson leaves his daughter, Jenny Barnhart of Sunman, Ind.; a son, Jody Hutson of Dover, Ind.; a sister, Ida Hutson of Hartford City, Ind.; a brother, Cecil Hutson of Richmond, Ind. and four grandchildren.

Margaret Hodell, pianist, ardent Reds fan
Margaret Hodell enjoyed being a concert pianist and writing songs for entertainer Phil Harris. But what she really loved was the Cincinnati Reds.
"She was an adamant Cincinnati Reds fan," said Rev. James Haney of Saint Christopher Episcopal Church in Lubbock, Texas . "She was cremated in her Cincinnati Reds cap and jacket."
Mrs. Hodell, 85, a Cincinnati native, died Feb. 28 in Lubbock. Rev. Haney conducted a memorial service for her Saturday in Lubbock.
Mrs. Hodell graduated from what is now the University of Cincinnati College Conservatory of Music. In 1940, she married Dr. George Hodell, who preceded her in death, and after World War II, they moved to Houston.
Mrs. Hodell was trained as a classical pianist and performed in concert. "She especially liked Chopin and Beethoven," noted Rev. Haney.
Mrs. Hodell also enjoyed popular music and wrote tunes for Harris, popular in the 1940s and '50s. "She said she had a lot of fun working with Phil Harris," said Rev. Haney.
But, her life-long passion was the Cincinnati Reds.
"The Reds, that's what she loved to talk about," said Rev. Haney. "She said her parents took her to her first Reds' game when she was an infant.
"She loved the Reds. Her favorite player was Tony Perez. She had a signed picture of him hanging over her bed.
"During the last few days of her life, when it was hard for her to talk about anything, she talked about how happy she was that Ken Griffey Jr. had been traded to the Reds."
Survivors include two daughters, Betsy Brock of Lubbock and Sarah Hodell of Honolulu; a son, Jonathan Hodell of San Leandro, Calif., and four grandchildren.
